NELSON WYATT COWANSVILLE - It was a rough life but a good one — that's the way that Ken Kavanagh remembers his stint in Canada’s wartime navy. The good times outweighed the bad in retrospect, said Kavanagh in an interview on the eve of Remembrance Day.One of the first five volunteers from Farnham to sign on with the Navy after the outbreak of hostilities in 1939.he didn’t start his training until the following spring because of clerical foul-up and bad winter roads “We had to go to Volunteer Reserve classes in Montreal twice a week,” he said, “but in those days, the roads weren’t cleared as well as they are now in the winter, and it was almost impos sible to get into Montreal ’’ After accelerated training at a makeshift boot camp at the Halifax exhibition grounds, he was then posted to his first ship, a corvette called The Pas as a signalman and assigned to convoy escort duty on the Atlantic Ocean and in the Caribbean Though the only trip he made to Eng- land was after the end of the war.crewing a ship that was being returned to the British after being on loan, he said that the crew of The Pas was still aware of the ever present danger of German U-boat packs that raised havoc with the Allied convoy runs across the channel during the early days of the war Some of their chases after sub contacts climaxed with the dropping of depth charges and the appearance of an oil geyser on the water — debris was the only sure indication of a kill — The Pas did have one encounter that could qualify as a close call “I remember I was just coming off watch one day when we were refueling in Saint John’s harbor I heard a loud bang and we were sent out on a sub alert a short time later,” said Kavanagh.” Though we didn’t find anything we found out later that a sub had slipped into the harbor area and launched a torpedo at us and the tank er However, instead of hitting us.it exploded against a large rock in the harbor ” The elements were another experi V ^'luu lu iuikr Daily t&rrurù ‘‘You never took a second helping of food because you only could hang onto whatever vou were carrvine in vour two hands,” said Kavanagh ‘‘If a big wave came up, your dinner might be washed overboard ” He added that it was not uncommon to be tossed around the sleeping quar ters during a rough voyage and one of the prime rules at sea was to make sure everything was securely tied down “It was really miserable in the win ter,” he said noting that sometimes ice would form on the wires on the ship, swelling from an inch in diameter to up to over eight inches The convoy runs which always began with the majestic massing of up to 60 or more ships at sea — were some what colorful in the Caribbean area, where exotic fish were a common sight Kavanagh even remembers taking the occasional trip through traffickers are buying up seashore property, not only as an in vestment for their illicit millions but as an aid to their smuggling operations “Buying beachfront property means they can boat their Colombian marijuana right up to their private property.' a knowledgeable source told us The drug traffic into the United States is largely controlled by organized crime, which rakes in the greenbacks by the billions The estimated haul from drugs is more than $40 billion a year The hottest item is the lowly marijuana joint, which generates most of the cash flow This means every pot smoker contributes indirectly to organized crime An estimated % per cent of the popular psychotropic weed now comes from one South American country Colombia There is strong evidence that a lot of the cash that American pot smokers lay out for Colom bian Gold is going into Florida real estate and other legitimate investments in the Sunshine State A secret Drug Enfor Jack Anderson cement Administration report details what happens to the money that pay’s for the 20 million pounds of marijuana smuggled into this country from Colombia each year Much of the money is initially deposited in Miami banks, in cash deposits ranging in size from 130 000 to $950 000.w ith an average of $200 000.” according to the confidential DE A report The cash deposits consist mostly of $20 bills brought into the bank in bags, boxes or suitcases earned by young men who appeared to be US citizens dressed casually in jeans and T-shirts who refused to show any form of identification.” the report states The cash flow is both large and steady One account in a Miami bank handled more than $4 million in cash deposits in a single month A DE A survey of just 19 out of 100 suspect accounts “revealed cash deposits totaling in excess of $53 million in a six-month period, including a one-month total of more than $20 million The banks provide a respectable and useful front for drug dealers, who unload their cash and then draw on their accounts to buy real estate and legitimate businesses One DEA report notes that “the wife of a prominent trafficker actually purchased a hank for $4 million in 1977 So much money flows into Florida hanks from Colombia that the Miami branch of the Federal Reserve Bank accepts direct deposits of U S cash from the Central Bank of Colombia No other foreign Central Banks make direct deposits to the Miami Branch,” a DEA report states The deposits from the Colombian central bank make up almost 15 per cent of the total cash receipts at the Miami Federal Reserve branch Much of the money is then tran sferred by wire to the Colombian bank's account at the Federal Reserve in New York Some of the drug profits are in turn transferred to banks in countries that offer tax exemptions and other advantages to depositors who want no questions asked — or answered One trafficker had $5 million transferred by TELEX from the Miami account to a bank account in Panama, a DEA report noted adding “Other transfers from bank accounts involved banks in Switzerland, the Bahamas.Venezuela and the Grand Caymans But a healthy chunk of the modern-day bootleggers income stays right office where animals that have been killed are registered No less than eight hunters had already been successful and all had lovely deer specimens The two first deer killed were registered by women and 1 understood once again that hunting is no longer exclusively for men 1 per sonally approve that women take part in this fascinating sport Many women hunters accompanied their husbands as became obvious from the lunch-hour crowd at the local restaurant One woman told me she has been getting a deer every year for the past four years now 1 also came across a game warden who had just confiscated a doe because, as you all know , bucks only are permitted Not only is the hunter's game confiscated but he is liable for a $300.00 fine and the loss of his hunting permit for some 15 months Big game season is now over but for the next few weeks small game and waterfowl are still permitted Pheasant hunting is becoming more and more popular One of the pi ov uice a most important pheasant hunting backfield when the Tiger-Cats go up against Ottawa Rough Riders on Sunday in their Canadian Football League showdown If forecasts suggest the natural-grass surface at Ottawa's Lansdowne Park will be wet.Ticats coach John Payne says he may activate running back Ronnie Rowland for the sudden-death Eastern Con ference final “We ll be getting a long range weather forecast before we make our decision.” Payne said.“You don’t go into the game with two entirely different plans, but the weather can affect your thoughts " If indications are that the field will be in good con- on the injury reserve list and Payne would go with Rufus Crawford, who made his CFL debut last weekend in Montreal against the Alouettes Despite a shaky start.Crawford looked impressive once he settled down “If it ‘ the field » is soft, you need your heavier hitter and Ronnie is a little different type of runner.” Payne said “Ronnie is more of a power runner than totally elusive Rufus looked pretty good on film If we do leave him in the line-up.we re going to have to work on some of his blocking ” Despite missing three games, Rowland, at six-foot one and 205 pounds, rushed for 814 yards on 179 carries for a for Saturday’s Western Football Conference semi-final in Calgary against the Stampe-ders B C coach Vic Rapp said Wednesday he plans to give Calgary something different to think about in the one-game shootout The winner meets Edmonton Eskimos in the conference final Nov 18 at Edmonton “In a game like this, they’ve looked at us for 20 games,” said Rapp, counting four exhibitions and 16 league games “So we’ve got to give them some new looks “Quite often in playoffs teams play more conservative. We’ve got to give VIC RAPP .something to think about them something new to think about “But basically, we’ve also got to stay w ith the things w e do best, not go to something we do second best What the Lions did best on offence this season was get the ball to running backs Larry Key and John Henry White.both 185-pound speedsters capable of scoring from anywhere on the field.MULTI-PURPOSE BACKS Key and White led the team in rushing Key had 1,060 yards and White gained 776 yards — and they also were the leading pass receivers on the team Quarterback Joe Paopao, w ho completed 58 per cent of his passes, often hit Key or White in the flats with short, swing passes in the ball-control offence preferred by Rapp The head coach also plans to have an experienced tight end in the lineup against the Stampeders, w ho w on two of three league games over the Lions Import Harry Holt was injured in the 15th league game in Regina and was put on the injured list while his badly-bruised back was treated Holt is listed as doubtful for the Calgary game and the Lions have import tight end Ricky Ellis also working out at the position Canadian rookie Mark Houghton played tight end in the last game of the regular season, but didn’t catch a pass.Ellis played the last four games of the 1978 season, catching 12 passes, but was released after the first exhibition game this year Cornwall dumps Beavers 9-6 Robert Turcotte scored three goals to pace Chicoutimi Sagueneens to a 5-2 triumph over Hull game By PAT TRACY The atmosphere around the Champlain campus is one of intense excitement this week as the Cougars football team prepare for the Golden Bowl provincial AAA championships The first-place Champlain squad will meet the Trois Rivieres Diablos at the Olympic stadium on Saturday to determine which team will represent Quebec in the national finals The Cougars have been working hard all week and are confident going into the game The uniqueness of the stadium with its artificial turf and large crowds should not worry the team, since they have planned lo practice on McGill’s turf and watch an Alouettes practice in preparation for the big game Trois Rivieres has a decided advantage going into the contest, having played in the Golden Bowl for the CEMENT GRAVEL TOPSOIL SAND CRUSHED ROCK POWELL TRANSPORT Inc.TEL: (819) 562-0212 Res.562-0803 past three seasons Cougars coach Ian Breck believes that once his team has a chance to warm up at the Big ‘O’, the newness of the situa tion will wear off and they will be able to concentrate on playing football The Cougars defense has worked during the week on plans to stop Diablos run ning back Luc Menard who is a definite offensive threat Breck says while the Trois Rivieres offense is not ex tremelv sophisticated, they are able to execute their plays effectively Menard runs hard inside and effect ive, as well as being an out side runner The Diablos quarterback is excellent and his passing to receiver Danny Rousseau will be a threat to the Cougars in their championship bid Todd Johnson, who had a good game for Champlain last weekend, will start as quarterback for the Cougars The team is guarding against overconfidence and looking too far ahead for fear of a repeat of last week’s performance.“All efforts are concentrating on Saturday.Breck comment ed.“We established a long term goal at the beginning of the season the bottom line of which was to play at the Big ‘O’ and win the provincials When we do that, then we ll prepare to meet the Ontario champ ions in the Canadian finals ” While the players are preparing themselves emotionally for the contest.Breck said he wouldn't rate the tension level higher than the last time the Cougars met Trois Rivieres “We re trying to treat it like just any other football game.” MONTREAL (CP) Assistant coach Claude Ruel of the National Hockey League's Montreal Canadiens reacted with bitterness Thursday to criticism voiced by right winger Guy Lafleur.saying “What he said is not honest Lafleur was reported as saying on the team’s charter flight home from a game Wednesday night at Pitt sburgh that Ruel was part of the reason the team has been struggling this season under first-year coach Bernie (ieoffrion The Canadiens have an 8 3 3 record that would be
