BELFAST (AP) — Security chiefs braced today for what Irish Republican Army (IRA) guerrillas have pledged to make a “jubilee blitz to remember” when the Queen visits Northern Ireland on Wednesday for the first time in 11 years.IRA supporters said about 30 Roman Catholic militants were detained in a weekend sweep by security forces in preparation for the Queen’s two-day visit— part of official silver jubilee celebrations.Police denied that a special roundup is under way but said the number of arrests might be up because of a feud between members of the outlawed IRA’s Provisional and Official wings.IRA extremists initiated their threatened new of- fensive Friday, bombing 19 Belfast businesses There were no injuries, but authorities estimated damage at more than $1.7 million.Government spokesmen said the royal visit would go ahead despite the violence and the threat of more to come.‘‘If we called it off now, it would give the Provisionals a spectacular propaganda victory,” one official said.Security chiefs here have told Britain’s secretary for Northern Ireland, Roy Mason, they are confident they can handle the situation.British Prime Minister James Callaghan reinforced British troop strength in Ulster, sending in the army’s 500-man Spearhead Battalion of Scots Guards.Towns to assemble over airport bill 4 M By JOHN McCAGHEY ( Record Reporter) GRANBY — Mayor Paul O.Trepanier has invited mayors of 18 municipalities, townships, and parishes located within 10 miles of Bromont to a meeting at city hall here tonight in an attempt to present a united front opposing a private bill slated to be tabled fn the national assembly Aug.10.Part of the bill would have all municipalities within the radius contributing to the upkeep of the Bromont airport on a pro-rata basis, based on municipal evaluation. The airport was originally built by Cowansville and Bromont, although Cowansville reduced its share of the maintenance costs in the last municipal budget.Mr.Trepanier cited the case of St.Jean d’Iberville several years ago when the municipal council decided they could no longer afford to operate the apport and the federal government assumed fiscal responsibility. The private members’ bill was placed before the assembly by PQ MNA Gilles Grégoire of Frontenac.BEE’S EYE VIEW — Biologist Brian Olding takes a closeup look at plant life around leader Bishop Abel Muzorewa accused a rival group Sunday of being responsible for a bomb blast Saturday in which 11 persons were killed and 76 injured. The bomb attack was “characteristic of the intimidation and indiscriminate terrorism” of the Zimbabwe African Peoples Union (ZAPU) led by Joshua Nkomo, the bishop told a news conference after he held a rally in the southern city of Bulawayo.Despite co-operation from Muzorewa’s United African National Council (UANC), police have made no arrests. The South African newspaper Sunday Express, however, quoted a guerrilla spokesman as saying in Lusaka that the Zimbabwe African National People’s Union (ZANU) had planted the 75 pounds of TNT that exploded Saturday at Wool worth’s department store near the black townships of Harare and High-fields.The bombing which killed eight blacks and three whites was the worst urban terrorist act in the five-year guerrilla struggle through which radical black nationalists are trying to take control of Rhodesia from the white-minority government. The guerrilla spokesman quoted in The Sunday Express said: “Robert Mugabe, joint leader with Mr.Joshua Nkomo .of the Patriotic Front, announced earlier this year that the war would be taken into the cities.” Guerrillas of Mugabe’s ZANU and Nkomo’s ZAPU, who together make up the Patriotic Front alliance, have been more active in the countryside than in urban areas through most of the conflict.Controllers strike Air travellers taking the bus A country-wide walkout early Sundy by 2,200 air traffic controllers in a contract dispute with the federal government stranded thousands of travellers and halted most air traffic into Canadian airports in the second air disruption in just more than a year Airports were converted into bus terminals as airlines scrambled to make arrangements for transporting passengers by bus to border cities in the United States for overseas or long-distance Controllers may lose strike right Nuclear protesters release squadron of helium balloons memorate Saturday’s 32nd anniversary of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima, Japan Fallout from a nuclear accident may travel this far.How far did your balloon travel?” read a card attached to a balloon released Saturday from Seabrook Harbor in New Hampshire.“You are downwind from a nuclear power plant,” said another sent from Waterford, Conn.“Just as these balloons have arrived at your doorstep, radioactive particles may have also.” Counter-protests were staged in some states by power company workers. In North Carolina and South Carolina, personnel of the Duke Power Co.launched balloons of their own with the message.“Nukes Make Good Neighbors.” The Virginia Electric Power Co., two of whose plants were weekend protest targets, issued a statement claiming it has saved customers millions of dollars in fuel costs by using nuclear power to generate electricity.INITIATE OCCUPATION The groups which organized the demonstrations pattern themselves on New Hampshire’s Clamshell Alliance, which last May initiated a weekend (See Balloons, pg.8) TORONTO (CP) Transport Minister Otto Lang said Sunday the federal government may consider withdrawing the right to strike from air traffic controllers and workers in other services where a shutdown seriously would damage the country.Lang said in an interview on the CBC radio program Sunday Morning that in cases such as the air controllers’ strike, “we are going to have to very seriously consider whether or not that right to strike is at all appropriate.” He said that in withdrawing the right to strike, he would make no distinction between the public and private sector and would include essential services of the “sort that damage the nation very, very seriously if closed down.” About 2,200 air traffic controllers in Canada walked off the job early Sunday in a contract dispute with the federal government.Parliament will sit Tuesday to study proposed legislation forcing the controllers to return to work and to accept a contract On Saturday, the minister had told a news conference that the decision to impose a settlement by legislation is not an indication the government may be reconsidering the right of its employees to strike Government employees were granted the right in 1967 and legislation rarely has been used to impose settlements.I^ang said it is apparent there is an “absolute impasse” in negotiations with controllers and that the impasse would not be ended even with a costly and disruptive strike He said the government has no alternative but to use legislation “If we had waited until we had a strike of eight days to use legislation then people would have said we should have done it at the beginning.” he said.flights Transport Minister Otto I^ang said in a statement Saturday that he will introduce legislation Tuesday which would require the controllers, members of the Canadian Air Traffic Control Association (CATCA), to return to work and accept a contract.Union president Jim Livingston said in an interview that he will recommend to CATCA members that they return to their jobs if Parliament passes the legislation.Starting Sunday, military airplanes were scheduled to return MPs and senators to Ottawa from their constituencies. To pass the legislation in one day, the government will (See AIR TRAFFIC.Pg.8) Capital staying here, Royal Bank chief says ST STEPHEN, N B (CP) — No significant amounts of capital are bejng taken out of the province of Quebec, Roland Frazee, president of the Royal Bank of Canada, said in an interview Saturday.Frazee said the removal of cash from banks in Quebec was evident only in the days immediately following the election of the Parti Québécois last November He said the Royal Bank has no plans to move its head office from Montreal but that he does not know know how proposed language legislation in Quebec will affect the bank’s head office operations “Much of the bill is han- dled by regulations which have not been published so we don’t know what effect they will have.” He said 10 per cent of the bank’s business is done in Quebec “We’re an international bank and the international language of business is English ” He said he is optimistic about the likelihood of economic recovery in Canada as the Canadian economy usually follows the United States, where the economy is becoming stronger.Frazee, a former major in the Carleton and York Regiment, was here for a reunion of the regiment.Domtar revote tonight EAST ANGUS (DS) -Domtar’s kraft paper mill could still continue operations past the predicted closure date of September 30, depending on the outcome of another union meeting The mill’s 470 union members will meet again tonight to reconsider the company’s final offer which includes a salary freeze and reductions in staff and benefits. The workers rejected the same offer Thursday night by a single vote, 161 to 160.More than 150 workers missed Thursday’s vote.Domtar, which has insisted all along that their conditions for keeping the 90-year-old mill operating were final, made minor concessions before Thursday’s vote. However a company spokesman said Friday there would be no further negotiations.“We’re surprised that a majority would prefer to not have a job, then have one,” said John Gossip, public relations officer for Domtar “As a result, we plan to close the mill as of September 30.” The company has insisted that the mill would only operate if it could be financially self-sufficient.Domtar also demanded the right to close the plant with 30 days notice should it begin to lose money The CNTU affiliated union released a statement Friday, asking that the company offer some degree of security for the workers should they agree to the rest of Domtar’s conditions Trudeau decision expected on Yukon pipeline fate ® 1977 by NIA.me OTTAWA (CP) - Prime Minister Trudeau may announce today the cabinet’s decision as to when a northern natural gas pipeline should be built, what route it should follow and what conditions will be sought from the United States Government sources said the cabinet was still divided after a special five-hour meeting Saturday and would try to reach a consensus in a meeting starting today at 1 p.m.EDT Discussions may continue Tuesday if no decision is reached today.Four main routes have been proposed to carry natural gas from Prudhoe Bay in northern Alaska to energy-hungry US.markets, three of them passing through Canada The most probable contender is a proposal by Foothills Pipe Lines Ltd of Calgary and a U S.partner to build a $10-billion pipeline through Alaska, the southern Yukon.British Columbia and Alberta to the U S.border This proposal is accepted as feasible by the National Energy Board, by a special environmental panel and by an inquiry headed by Kenneth Lysyk, dean of law at the University of British Columbia But the energy board would prefer a modified proposal to lay the pipe along a more northeasterly route deeper inside the Yukon to provide an easier link with a future pipeline from the Mackenzie Delta should natural gas fields in that area come into commercial production SEVERE BLOW A proposal by the Arctic Gas consortium to carry Alaskan gas across the northern Yukon and along the Mackenzie Valley through the Northwest Territories was dealt a severe blow by Mr Justice Thomas Berger, who said in a report that it would be environmentally and socially devastating Rejection of the Arctic Gas proposal on environmental grounds by the National Energy Board appeared to seal its fate. The fourth proposal comes from El Paso Co.Ltd.of Houston, which has applied in Washington to build a pipeline south across Alaska to the port of Valdez, where the gas could be converted to liquid and shipped south by tanker This proposal would be more expensive than an overland route, but it is being held in reserve by the US.in case Canada demands a long delay in construction or poses other conditions unacceptable to U S.interests.Lysyk said no work should begin in the Yukon before 1981 to allow time for settlement of native land claims and to give Yukdners a better chance to prçparç for the consequences of pipeline construction Promoters of the Yukon route hoped to have the gas flowing by 1983 ] DRAWING 190 Aug.5 7 7 7 7 0 7 0 “7ÏT *2 cup cold water 3 egg seems to be almost as fascinated with Dolly Par-ton’s hair and her figure as they are with her voice And.even though Dolly is primarily a singer, that’s all right with her That’s because, to Dolly, the idea of being a star — a big and famous and bright and shiny star — is the important thing And everything else, like her wigs and her bosomy silhouette, helps contribute to that image So she goes along with the gags about her hair and her bust and.as a matter of fact, encourages them They help the publicity and the publicity helps the stardom, so, in her mind, they are good things Dolly, probably the top country and western gal singer today, is never seen without a wig of some sort They run the gamut from simple to ridiculous, from plain little things to towering temples of tresses “This one I'm wearing today,” she says, “is very conservative This is my Beverly Hills wig It’s only eight inches high It appeared to be a cascade of blonde curls, simultaneously climbing toward the heavens and tumbling down the side of her face and around her neck “I think wigs are such fun.” Dolly said “I’m like a kid — I like to do things that are fun But.actually, wigs have a practical value to me “I started wearing them because they ’re so handy I do my own hair all the same, but it's so easy just to stick a wig on when I want to go out Then it got to be a publicity gimmick — at least.I'm not going to be overlooked in a crowd “I’m so short and so large in the bust that the wigs look good — they offset all the other things ” There was a time when she thought she could use a wig to disguise herself It happened one Christmas season, when she wanted to go out and shop like ordinary folks So she got a short, dark wig and sallied forth into the world “I didn't wear any makeup.” she says, and I had on flat heels and very plain clothes, not like what I usually wear But I'd no sooner gotten in the door of the store when I heard this woman sav Look DOLLY PARTON: The voice gave her away.there's Dolly Parton in a black wig ” She thinks it wasn't the disguise that was penetrated, but her voice She admits to being a first-rate talker — “I love everybody and always stop and talk” — and believes it was her voice that gave her away “My voice is as recognizable as my hair and my gaudy appearance.” she says She likes to make the wig business into a little private joke She says that, as a kid.she dreamed of being a big wig in show business — “and I made it ” The strange part about it is that it’s true She did dream of being a star and it was a strange dream for her to have, because at the time, she didn’t know what a star was In fact, she hardly knew what a performer was Home, for Dolly, was a tobacco farm in the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee Lee Parton had a family of 12 children and Dolly was the fourth down from the top “Tobacco was our money crop, she says, but we also raised beans, tomatoes and corn We always ate fine, even if in the winter sometimes it was just corn bread and gravy and pinto beans But we killed about two hogs a year “We made all our own soap ground all our own meal About all we had to buy was coffee, sugar and flour Somehow.Dolly Parton began singing Her mother’s family was.she says, musically inclined so that’s where it probably began At five the little tow-headed girl started singing — and the strange thing was that the songs she sang were songs she made up herself “I had a gift of rhyme she says “I'd listen to the conver sations the grown-ups was having and I’d make up songs about them I got a guitar when I was six and a half and kept on making up songs I’ve about wrote myself to death since then ” At 10.she first sang on the radio and made her first record At 18.she went off to Nashville to follow her dream “I think.” she says, that my life has been real strange I think it was destined to be I | wanted to be a star before I jknew what a star was I wanted to be different and 1 was different There wasn't another one like her in the dozen Parton brood The eight that are younger than her are all today in the music business, somewhere, but that's mostly on the strength of Dolly’s fame Her oldest sister.Willodeene.has written a book of poetry.“Denim.Lace and Bandanas ” She never faltered in her pursuit of that dream And it turned out to be fairly easy There were some eariv struggles but not many, not long not severe She thinks that her early religious training helped her succeed “I owe a lot to my religious background, she says.“My folks were always positive people, and they made me positive, too I never think negative thoughts I’m a really happy person I’ve had my problems, but nothing I couldn't get out of She still writes most of the songs she records for RCA She says 99 per cent of the songs she sings are her own She never studied music, but the melodies and the words come to her.and she sings them into a tape recorder and somebody transcribes them and a song is born Success, in countrv music, is a big thing A lot of money comes to Dolly Parton as the result of her recordings, lier appearances her TV work The stories that I own Tennessee are not true, she says Most of my money is in land in Tennessee, but I don't own the whole state I will say that I do own a large chunk of it however She’s able to indulge all those childhood fantasies At her home she has all the animals she ever dreamed of having — cows, ducks, peacocks cats dogs, whatever In fact the entire dream has come true and it’s all beautiful, with one exception My only major problem Dolly says, is my throat It’s bothered me some the last few years I’ve been under a doctor's care for four years I think it must be some kind of allergy to something I think maybe it s the humidity in Tennessee ” %»¦KNTtiHIttIM- \*s\ 3 Dolly knew what she wanted-and got it Beat cold water and egg yolks together, then stir into the hot mixture gradually Bring to the boil, cook until thick (about 5 Delicious! Thank you for a super recipe Mrs N And here is my favourite summer pie PINEAPPLE CREAM PIE 2 cups crushed pineapple 11* cup sugar ® 2 cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch ( 2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons lemon juice Heat the crushed pineapple in a double boiler Mix sugar, cornstarch and salt, add to hot pineapple, cook, stirring constantly until smooth and thick Let cook 10 minutes longer to remove any raw starch taste, then stir in beaten egg yolks and cook 2 minutes longer Remove from heat, add lemon juice and let cool before pouring into cold tart shells Meringue topping may be used or whipped cream with a sprinkling of moist cocoanut and a small spoonful of crushed pineapple to garnish I sometimes just make it in a regular pie plate but the tarts are very tempting in the summer weather Let me have YOUR favourite recipe to share with the Record readers! around. The striking English brunette says, however, that beauty is no longer a great asset in Hollywood.“Glamor or beauty,” she says, “are no longer in demand I often go to interviews for parts without any makeup.with my hair pulled back, trying to look as unglamorous as possible. And still they say.Too pretty, too glamorous.’ ” There are some parts, of course, where being attractive is a plus. One such is her recent Universal film.“The Bawdy Adventures of Tom Jones,” in which she plays a highwayman (highwayper-son°i named Black Bess. But parts like that are rare.Mostly, she says, “the producers seem to think that the only parts a pretty girl can play are actresses, models or call girls They would never cast me as a housewife or mother — and yet that’s exactly what I am in real life” She says she’s fed up with the normal Hollywood way of working, because of her experiences “I've decided.’’ she says, that you have to create your own roles, fight for them If you don’t, you’re like a book on the shelf — you never get taken down “So I’m becoming a librarian.I’m going to take myself down I’m going to produce my first film this winter in England It’s The Stud.’ based on a book written by my sister, Jackie” Is it a glamorous part, a part for a beautiful woman? She smiles “Yes,” it is ••• Raymond Massey has completed the first half of his autobiography Called “When I Was Young” it takes him up tohismid-20s The second half tl two thirds finished He says now that he doubts he will ever act again, but he is excited about writing After I finish my autobiography.” he says, “I want to write a play It will be set in an English courtroom, which is a setting for drama I have always found fascinating ” JOAN COLLINS, seen here in her recent release, “The Bawdy Adventures of Tom Jones,” says such roles where glamor is a plus are rare today.Massey has some in teresting theories about actors and acting For one thing, he doesn’t believe that it is necessary to study acting “I've been misquoted on this before.” he says, “but my real feelings are this: academic training cannot possibly hurt a would-be actor, but it probably can’t help, either ’’ He says the only way for someone to become an actor is to act — “preferably in front of a paying audience.” He also has strong opinions about actors who say they submerge their won personalities while doing a role “Any actor,” Massey says, “who says he tries to submerge his own personality and become the character he’s playing should get out of the business “An actor must keep his own personality and superimpose the character on top of that That’s why I feel actors like Gary Cooper and John W ayne are excellent They are always themselves I tried to do that in my 55 years of acting And those others — who I will not name — who have Oscars on their mantels, but they are not nearly as good as Cooper and Wayne were” ing of Atlanta.Ga , was omitted from the 60th Wed ding Anniversary of Mr and Mrs K W Hunting My success here, in part because of being different, slightly mysterious. There is a new import beginning to make his presence felt, and his background is probably more exotic than most of the others His name is Aharon Ipale, and he’s a broodingly handsome young man He’s just finished his first movie, which may be called “The Personal Touch” or “Too Hot to Handle” or “Hit Woman” — they haven’t made up their minds yet And he was in “Raid On Entebbe.” the TV movie in which the late Peter Finch played Yitzhak Rabin On the strength of those two appearances.Ipale has done some other things — a TV film.“Feather and Father.” was his latest Ipale is a Moroccan, an Israeli and Englishman — take your pick He’s lived in all those places, and more He considers himself an Israeli, but now he’s here and perhaps he’ll become an American He was bom Mecness, in Morocco, and his first language was Arabic. He’s one of 10 children of a successful butcher His father had always been an ardent Zionist “Each night, at supper,” he says, “my father would pray over the wine and say, Next year in Jerusalem'” When Aharon was 2.the family left for Israel But it took two years to get there, two years spent mostly in a camp outside Marseilles.France For Aharon, he found life in Israel was at first more difficult than it had been in Morocco “Morocco was one Arab country that did not persecute Jews,” he says “In fact, Morocco protects Jews and.in past history.Morocco tried to get Jews to come there In a sense.I found more persecution in Israel ” TIIK SHERBROOKE RECORD - MON.AUG.K.1977 Capacity crowd
