THE PHONE: MYAK TOO MUCH OTTAWA CP) — With 18 billion local telephone calls and more than a billion long distance calls in 1977.Canada has retained its reputation as as one of the most talkative countries in the world.a spokesman for the Trans-Canada Telephone System said Wednesday He said a report on the world s telephone population by American Telegraph and Telephone also shows that in 1978 Canada ranked fourth in the number of telephones-per-person category with 63 of them for every 100 Canadians Only Switzerland.Sweden and the United States had higher phone densities ATT surveyed 230 countries for the 89-page report which contains tables of data on the number of telephones in the continental areas as well as the world s major cities and the number of calls placed in each country There are more than 423 million telephones in the world At the beginning of 1978 there were 14.5 million phones in Canada, up 73 per cent over 1968 The report shows Edmonton led all other Canadian cities with 79 telephones per 100 persons, followed by Calgary.Ottawa and Toronto with 78 and Lethbridge, Alta .with 77 Brantford.Ont., where Alexander Graham Bell conceived the telephone, had the lowest with only 54.On a global basis, Washington, D C., came first with almost 1.5 telephones for every person The countries most frequently called by Canadians during 1977 were the United States, the United Kingdom and West Germany. The spokesman said ATT is the largest national telephone system in the world and it compiled the report as a guide to global telephone development for its management and technical employees.Enjoy it A ridge of high pressure will continue to dominate most regions of Quebec today and tomorrow, the weatherman says.Today will be sunny with some cloudy periods.Tomorrow has little change forecast.Inside Commentary ‘'The unconscious bigot is usually the most fairest person of all” according to Merritt Clifton, who ponders the injustices meted out to the so-called Chinese “boat-people” by all who have allowed or denied them a home, especially those most concerned.Commentary, Page 4.Asbestos Final pleas began today for and against the expropriation of the assets Asbestos Corp.If the ruling favours expropriation, the American multinational claims it could be absorbed within twenty four hours, though the government claims that it will not be hasty about any action.See page 3.*\ THE SHERBROOKE RECORD .oioe of the Eastern Townships since 1807 SAFE CUSTODY OF SECURITIES We otter a COMPlE T E custodial service tor ALL your investments For further information call m • Central Building il king M V\cst Sherbrooke »b9 9416 t Mher offices across 4 anada THURSDAY.JULY 1».1979 IS CENTS Lockout creates forest fire danger By JOHN McCAGHEY LEVIS — All of Quebec south of the St Lawrence River from Montmagny-l’lslet through to the Quebec-New York border at Fort Dundee.Ile Perrot, and Vaudreuil-Soulanges counties have minimum forest fire protection following the lockout by the Société de Conservation du Sud du Quebec of patrollers and clerical staff Tuesday Society general manager Andre Lessard was not available for com ment, but the lockout leaves forest protection in the hands of five inspectors who are part of management The six other societies in the province who are responsible for fire protection south of the 50th parallel have settled their labor disputes General Manager Andre Lessard said yesterday the 27 CSN affiliated workers were locked out as they had been disrupting the communications system as a pressure tactic to speed up negotiations "We had two meeting with union leaders and told them if the tactics continued they would be locked out,*’ Lessard said “They continued and we kept our word ” Lessard said the employees had been given the same offer which was ac- cepted by employees in the Quebec Mauricie and Gaspe Societies which they refused He said the sole remaining stumbling block was the monetary issue and they were awaiting news from the union to resume negotiations The two parties See FIRES.Page 3.New chief orders full evaluation WELCOME HOME, BOA T PE0PIE! Treasury Secretary Michael Blumentnal; Energy Secretary James Schlesinger; and Transportation Secretary Brock Adams Califano was believed to be high on Carter’s list of those to be fired, said knowledgeable sources in his depart ment The secretary, who has close ties to traditional liberal Democrats, has fought with Jordan from the administration’s start At the health, education and welfare department, sources who declined to be named said Califano did not know whether he will be fired, but he expects the worst Aides to Adams and Blumenthal also expressed fear their bosses’ resignations will be accepted From the White House to cabinet See C ARTER, Page 2.Fifteen refugees such as these recent arrivals in Montreal, came to Sherbrooke vesterdav to establish a new home.RECORD NEWS SERVICES SHERBROOKE Fifteen South east Asian refugees have found a new home in the Townships after floating aimlessly for months as members of the Boat People The refugees, ll Laotians and four Vietnamese, arrived here yesterday by bus They will be put up in a city hotel until suitable lodgings, furniture and other necessities have been found The refugees are Ixmig aided in adapting to their new home by Lise Gaudeite of the Centre International and multicultural de l’Estrie (CIME) They are divided into four families Unfamiliar with the ways of Canadian life, once settled, the refugees will study with the Centre d'orientation et de formation des im migrants (COFI), to gain better knowledge on how to orient themselves.Meanwhile, a number of local groups have said they are ready to aid at least 300 Asian refugees Action fraternité Vietnam, supported by Caritas Sher brooke and the Service d’aide aux Ne2 mile to one mile Most Semi-trucks have a gross loaded weight of between 70.1HX) and 80,(XX) pounds This weight will not stop on a dime Either the truck w ill go into the ditch or you will be creamed 2 Know who is behind you When you approach a traffic light and it turns yellow, look in your rear view mirror If a truck is approaching fast, go through the yellow light If he can t stop and you DO.you'll be pushed through the in tersection anyway 3 Drive the speed limit when conditions are good Slowpokes are a hazard If you enjoy sight seeing, do it on a highway where com mercial vehicles are not permitted 4 When you pull into the left lane to pass, for heaven's sakes, pass' Don’t drive alongside a car for five miles.Someone else might want to pass, too When it’s a truck you’re trying to pass, be aware that the truck driver has a blind spot If you’re in a small car.you will bo (Hit of sight in certain places Pass as quickly and safely as possible l could go on and on but these are the major problems Please tell your readers.Ann.to remember this above all If a car and a truck have an accident, the people in the car are almost certain to get the worst of it Mpls.Trucker’s Wife Dear Wife: On behalf of my millions of readers, thank you for what is sure to be a life-saving contribution to this column Dear Ann: Recently my husband and I had dinner at a Japanese steak house with two other couples As is customary, we were seateu around the cooking area enjoying ourselves We all ordered a glass of plum wine A young woman seated nearby asked if the wine was good I replied.“Yes ” She then asked me.May I taste yours?” I hesitated - reluctant to share my glass with her Another woman in our party then passed HER glass The stranger took a sip.said.“Thank you' It’s delicious.’’ and passed the glass back My husband felt I was ungracious for not sharing my glass with her and said, “Mrs C.really showed you up." HALF OYER 50 But the shortage is increasingly acute in the western provinces, he told a news conference Monday CAO figures show that almost half the optometrists in Western Canada are over the age of 50 — graduates mainly of the post-war years Alberta and Saskatchewan are in better shape, with 40 per cent aged 50 or older In British Columbia the figure is 55 per cent and in Manitoba 60 per cent.Brown said the problem is that not enough students from western Canada attend the two eastern schools. This year, only 13 enrolled in Waterloo.one from Manitoba Brown said the association has been pushing for the new school for the last 10 years and in 1976 set up a fund to help finance the school So far, the fund has accumulated about $1 million But development of the school has stalled in the planning stage The University of Calgary has show ^interest in having the school and Bert Hohol, minister for advanced education in the last Alberta government.committed provincial money to the idea But university administrators worry the new faculty might drain funds from other programs.WANTS ASSURANCES Dr Ken Armstrong of Edmonton.in charge of the OAC negotiating committee, said the university wants assurances that the school and its aocompanying clinic would be self-supporting after the $7-to $10-million capital expenditure is made If the new school is built, there w ould be no shortage of students, said Brown.Applications to the two existing schools have more than exceeded quotas each year “If we were able to take part of that overflow, they’d jump at this school,” he said.Calgary was chosen as the site for the proposed school because the university already has an established medical school and health-oriented faculties He noted that the University of Alberta in Edmonton already has a school of ophthalmology — ophthalmologists treat eye diseases, while optometrists deal with correction of vision problems — and has less room to expand than Calgary The new school would not only train practicing optometrists but also be involved in research and the training of new teachers Brown said the school might eventually be the hub of a network of satellite clinics across Western Canada Polly Cramer DEAR ANNE — You might use a dough-type wallpaper cleaner. Also, you could dampen a soft cloth, dip it in baking soda and wipe each side of each card. After cleaning either way sprinkle talcum powder on the cards and shuffle a time or two to restore that slick feeling. You must be patient to undertake such a job.In many cases it would be better to use that time to buy some new cards.— POLLY DEAR POLLY — I have a couple of energy savers. When I need melted butter for a crumb pie crust I put the needed amount in a pie plate, set it on the top of my toaster and push the button down two different times.By then the butter is melted. When I only want to soften the butter to go in frosting I put it in a bow l that is put on the gas stove pilot light.- MARGIE DEAR POLLY - L.M.can remove that musty odor from her books by putting them in a paper bag, sprinkle with whole or ground cloves, clamp bag shut and let them stand for a month. This has w'orked for me on a rag doll, toys and a traveling bag.— MRS.A.B.DEAR POLLY — When I have leftover egg yolks after making something that calls for the w hites only Ï poach the yolks, cool them and then put through a sieve. They are nice for salads, canapes and garnishes. After washing slacks or any trousers I always hang them by the legs. The weight of the wret garment will remove almost all the wrinkles and they need little pressing.Instead of buying new blanket edging when the binding is worn I crochet an edge on both sides of the covering.AUDREY MADAM E.S.P.-Psychologist-Clairvoyant Astrologist-PsyChic Reader Healer ?J By Oswald Jacoby and Alan Sontag Today shows our old friend the unlucky expert at his worst He reached a reasonable notrump slam which can be made, but succeeded in going down two in spite of starting with 11 top tricks.Of course, his opponents gave him his chance. He won the club lead in dummy, came to his hand with a diamond, led a heart and played dummy’s nine.East won with the jack and led a second club. Our hero had to play the queen and West proceeded to drop his 10.Now dummy’s ace and king of spades were cashed and then South ran the diamonds to come down to a three-card ending. He held the three of hearts and 9-7 of spades; dummy the ace-king-10 of hearts. And East, who had dropped the queen and jack of spades on dummy’s ace and king, had been caught in a heart-spade squeeze and was left with the 10 of spades and queen-seven of hearts so the slam was there for the taking.Meanwhile, West had made just one discard. It was the nine of clubs! He had hung on to the 7-4 of that suit. Now, South overthought. He decided that East was still clutching those two clubs along with the 10 of spades and that West held the queen-8-7 of hearts. This was silly indeed, but our friend does go out of his way to lose.He led a heart, finessed dummy’s 10 and was down two.'newspaper enterprise assn < (Do you have a question for the experts9 Write Ask the Experts, care of this newspaper Individual questions will be answered if accompanied by stamped, self-addressed envelopes The most interesting questions will be used in this column and will receive copies of JACOBY MODERN I 12) Pulse 6:30 p.m.2) Propos et Confidences 5) NBC News 7) Justice Pour Tous 8) Mary Tyler Moore 6:45 p.m.9) Nouvelles 6:55 p.m.8) Maine State Lottery' 7:00 p.m.2) 9) Une Arche Immobile 3) CBS News 6) Mary Tyler Moore 5) Carol Burnett and Friends 7) Qui Dit Vrai?8) Tic Tac Dough 12) Makin’ It 7:30 p.m.2) 9) Qui Sont-Ils?3) Cross-Wits 6) Bonkers! younger than a welcome sign Happy in my own way.I felt a something missing That inside would not betray.I breathed the different smells Of earth, hayfields and spring I watched with friends, fading rainbows W'hich left me wondering. Was it only me that needed love9 How strong did one have to be9 Alone it all was taking place, Then you came to he with me We met in winter’s whiteness You turned around my past.Sort of like old Christmases. You brought a gift to last We talked about our future plans; Build a house, save a dream. But holding on to summer sands, My heart turned cold again Not cold in the sense of being cold.Just wondering if it’s going too fast, And wanting to.before we re through.Share the gift to last With you it’s always Christmas I'm 80 degrees above The expectations I’d forgotten Have once more turned to love Snowflakes wrapped in streetlights.Fresh tracks in the snow.Tumbling, building snowmen.Bundling warm and walking slow W ith you it’s always Christmas. The price wonder?Longmuir, a 26 year old Englishman, shot a record equalling 65 in the first round Wednesday to lead a cadre of Americans into today s second round Despite having won only two tour naments as a pro, the virtual unknown was convinced he could go on to glory “I think I can win the Open if I hang on and just play nicely,** said Longmuir, who was once so broke he drove a truck to raise money to con tinue as a player and has entered male personality contests But the man with the unlikely pedigree hit eight birdies in the first 12 holes over the w indy Lytham course to leave Hale Irwin, the United States Open champion, three shots back in second spot Irwin shot 68.and Jerry Pate was another stroke back in third place The battle hardened American pros were amazed at Longmuir's birdie run “The guy w ho shot 65°' Irw in asked I take my hat off to him Good gosh, what an amazing round of golf Incredible.” Defending champion Jack Nicklaus, who like favorite Tom Watson found the narrow fairways too much to handle, joked i don't believe the score and I don’t believe there is such a person ’ H**< ord photo A member of the Kiwanis South All-stars in action last year K V Im Sher-Lenn squad off to Montreal By BOB IIALSALL The Sherbrooke-Lennox ville Little League Baseball Allstars will begin Tournament play on Saturday when they visit the Kiwanis South Allstars in Montreal The coach for the Sherdinners is an old pro at it himself, Denis Gosselin. He knows his team will have their work cut out for themselves if they hope to join Sher Mont in the Provincial Championships Gosselin says his team is well balanced in most areas No superstars like the days of Normand Houle or Jean Grenier he coaches a high-spirited group of boys who know how to win but haven’t forgotten what it is like to lose “These boys want to win more than anything, just so they can play in the Provincials alongside of the Sher brooke Fleurimont team,” Gosselin said The Sher-Lenn Allstars have been practicing vigorous lv for the past two weeks and everything should be set come Saturday afternoon.Gosselin is unsure at the moment who the nine boys he calls on to start the game Sat urday will be, but we can be sure they’ll be his best nine.On the pitcher’s mound, Alain Tremblay will probably get the starting nod but anything could change that decision right up until game time on Saturday.Other pitch ers who could see action throughout the tournament are Jean Bois, Sylvain Cloutier, Guy Ainslie.Simon Lessard, Mike Prévost, or Jacques Gagne There are no pitchers that can strike out 14 or 15 batters in a game The secret will be to keep the pitches on the corners, low and in the strike zone Walks hurt every team, so the boys will have to be careful The starting catcher will be Stéphane Simard a third year boy on the team, and unless he should be hurt or be come ill during the tournament he will not be relieved in this position The first base bag will be well looked after once Gosselin decides who will start there Three boys of equal talent can play there - they are Jean Bois, Peter MacDonald, and Michael Prévost.Height and speed is a necessity at that position Sylvain Cloutier will start at second He is very quick and can cover as much territory as anyone At shortstop.Gosselin has three very good athletes to choose from Along w ith Tremblay, both Simon Lessard and Guy Ainslie can play there equally well Third base will be filled by one of the extra infielders The outfield positions can be filled by any one of seven boys and hitting will decide which players will start Sat urdav.Saturday’s game is slated to start at 2:00 p m at Ar-genson Park on Atwater Ave in Montreal Gosselin paid a visit to the park last week and found the dimensions of the park to be very good, except that the distance be tween home plate and the pitcher’s rubber is only 43 feet In Sherbrooke, pitchers throw from a 46 foot distance The only other problem he cited was the infield it has been built up higher this season, which will make the ball bounce in many different directions Win or lose.Sherbrooke will in all probability be playing host to Sun Youth from Montreal Sunday afternoon at the parade grounds on Queen Boulevard Nothing, though, will be official until after Saturday’s game Listen to local radio and television stations Saturdav night or Sunday morning Gosselin has chosen seven players from his league team (Sénateurs): Alain Tremblay, Jean Bois, Sylvain Cloutier.Jacques Gagne.Francois Desbiens, Eric lwing lois and Stéphane Simard Bob Halsall’s Lennoxville Yankees, for the first time in Sher-Lenn history, have placed four boys on the team Simon I^essard, Bruce Home, Peter MacDonald and Michael Prévost Expos Guy Ainslie and Marco Guille mette along with Tiger Hong Dung gives Gosselin 14 players While the Sher-Lenn team will be opening in Montreal, the Sher Mont squad iunder coach Andre Boisvert' will be preparing for the Provincial Championships Alouettes?BUFFALO, N Y (AP) — Buffalo Bills have an nounced that Tom Cousineau, the first pick in the 1979 National Football League draft, has reached an agreement w ith Montreal Alouettes of Canadian Dorsett and Hickey Bell “The Bills are upset to lose Cousineau,’’ he added.“But the Bills will retain his rights should he elect to play in the NFL in the future “It is our understanding that the deal involves ownership in the CFL team for both Cousineau and his attorney, Jimmy Walsh ” Cousineau, the former all America from Ohio State, was scheduled to announce his choice later today at a news conference in New York Ozark on NL Cast: Cubs could do it PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Manager Danny Ozark of Philadelphia Phillies says he believes it will take 95 victories to win the National League East “It will be a scramble among Montreal, Pittsburgh and ourselves,” says Ozark who is not counting out the contending Chicago Cubs “We could be beating each other’s brains out and the Cubs might slip in.” If Ozark’s figure is correct, the division-leading Expos would have to play 582 baseball to record that number. They played 588 to the all-star break The Cubs can reach Ozark’s magic number if they play at a 620 pace They were .553 before the midsummer classic. As for Ozark’s defending division champions, seeking an unprecedented fourth straight East title, they’ll have to go at a 644 clip to the end of the season to reach 95 The Pirates, traditionally stretch runners, have the longest way to go to reach 95 They will have to win at a 646 rate The Phillies played 549 and the Pirates 541
