winds gusting up to 100 kilometres an hour, caused breif power failures for thousands of homes across southern Quebec But power lines snapped, trees were uprooted and Lennoxville-Sherbrooke area residents suffered a two-hour blackout, putting some 5000 homes in the dark According to airport weather officials, 20 6 milimetres of rain fell in Clark, Nkomo disagree LUSAKA, Zambia (CP) — Prime Minister Clark of Canada is calling for moderation in dealing w ith the problem of Zimbabwe Rhodesia but a black nationalist guerrilla leader says “you can t compromise with slavery.” Clark told a news conference Thursday that his role at the Com monwealth conference, his first as prime minister, is to work for an agreement on the breakaway British colony He said he believes there will be a general agreement on a “process toward peace and security” but said the conference is unlikely to produce a quick agreement on the guerrilla war in the African territory He said agreement should be built on moderation, a willingness to co-operate by Britain, which has indicated it might recognize the new black led govern ment of Prime Minister Abel Muzorewa, and the socalled front-line states, such as Zambia and Tanzania However.Clark’s approach was the opposite to the stand taken earlier in the day by guerrilla leader Joshua Nkomo “You can't compromise with slavery, with oppression, with suppression,” said Nkomo, head of the Zimbabwe African People s Union (ZAPU) What is a moderate solution? Is freedom immoderate?” Speaking to reporters during a tour of a refugee camp run by ZAPU, Nkomo said the only acceptable solution is a new constitution and elections based on around 50 minutes The record for downfall is some 110 milimetres in one hour Police in Sherbrooke had to wade in ankle deep puddles to get at a wreck age when a retaining wall at the Depot Street parking lot behind the Trois Freres restaurant collapsed, sending a parked car and a bicycle down some 20 feet into a pile of rubble In Magog on the Venise road, storm lightning split a 50 year-old.40-foot pine tree into three pieces, each piece just missing the house of Elise and IxMinart Linholm No other damage was reported in the area According to Elise Linholm.the rain was so strong and fast that cars were pulling off the road and waiting for the deluge to end In Montreal, trees were uprooted, pleasure boats overturned and a woman was struck by lightning ' It’s not impossible that it was a tor nado.” said a weather official at Dor val Airport "But it didn't act like most of them ” Instead of the circular effect common to twisters, this storm appeared to whistle straight across the island, creating what meteorologists call a "tunnel effect” as it swept along Police reported no fatalities although a woman was treated in hospital after she was struck by lightning while crossing the street A preliminary estimate placed property damage in the thousands - • i - r j I’hiilo Sieve McDougall s in the Trucks terrorize Rte 55 By STEVE MePOUGALL SHERBROOKE — This summer, construction has been stepped up on the Route 55 between Drummondville and Magog Though it will make travelling in the Townships much easier in the future, it’s making life difficult for drivers who use the present 55 route between Windsor and Sherbrooke The main problem, according to one transport driver for a major paper company, is the trucks that obstruct traffic and speed as they haul gravel and sand from numerous pits and quarries to the roadbed site The driver, who didn’t want his name mentioned for fear of reprisals, says that he has been cut off a few times by truckers trying to haul as many loads of gravel or sand as possible before the day is done The drivers are for the most part independent, meaning that each driver owns his own trucks and hires himself out to companies, usually being paid piecemeal Thus the more loads they haul, the more money they make Reports of trucks seen racing each other up and down the highways have been some of the many complaints received by police authorities.According to Quebec Provincial See RTF; 55, Page 3 black-majority rule.He said he hopes Clark and Canada will support “real independence” for Zimbabwe Rhodesia ZAPU is asking Canada not to have anything to do with the current Zim babwe Rhodesian government, a black white partnership in which whites control key posts The Rhodesian problem has been facing the Commonwealth and the world since 1963 when Ian Smith, then prime minister, declared unilateral independence from Britain The move has never been recognized by Britain or the United Nations and one *of the issue still to be settled is whether to continue trade sanctions called for by the UN.QFL offers to mediate rift QUEBEC (CPi —
