festival feast for film buffs to come next week LE TAMBOUR (THE TIN DRUM, German with French sub-titles) is based on the Gunter Grass classic and made with his close participation The film, which shared first prize at Cannes with APOCALYPSE NOW is heavy going It is a symbolic commentary on history and the individual. We were immediately struck by the conflict of the ByDONNELLY For film buffs, the time for a long weekend in Montreal has never been more ripe Forty dollars will buy you a shot at 15 of the best films the world has to offer In merely three years, the World Film Festival in Montreal has gained an international reputation as the North American Cannes Each year, foreign filmmakers wanting to gain entrance to the American market and promoters of American films facing difficulties in distribution make their pilgrimage to Montreal Here they are joined by their hosts in the Canadian industry For the participants, the commercial intent of the festival is thinly disguised All of the theatres in the Complexe Desjardins have been taken over by the film market where some two hundred films from 20 countries are being screened The Meridian Hotel becomes a bee-hive of booths and backroom bargaining Huge, lavish parties are thrown by Montreal’s local moguls The critics and press are dowsed with hype, sweet talked by stars at press conferences and forced to consume mass quantities of films for breakfast, lunch and dinner But, for the public, the festival presents a chance to set* the stars emerge from their sleek limos on opening night and experience the street filling excitement which they generate We are offered more good films than one can possibly view in ten days, 69 features and 20 shorts The voyeur can see it being done in hundreds of different way, shapes and forms The revolutionary can have his ideals confirmed or challenged, if he’s genuine There’s cuteness for the romantic, tradition for the classicist, violence and apathy for the realist You can have just about anything you want at the Festival’s celluloid restaurant But, above all, the World Film Festival in Montreal provides Quebeckers with the opportunity to taste and compare the cultures of the participating nations And each year the list of nations grows This year, there are official entries in the competition from Poland.Argentina, Iran, Venezuela, Japan, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Mauritania, V ranee, Russia, Italy.Hungary, the Netherlands, Columbia, Belgium.Korea and, of course, Canada and the U S.In addition, there are non-competing entries from some of the above as well as Spain, Brazil, Hong-Kong, Switzerland, Turkey, Egypt and the People’s Republic of China It would be impossible and presumptuous to summarize the cultural impact of the Festival on the public, except to say that it provides a rich crossfertilization of ideas and promotes greater understanding between peoples. Here is a brief selection of some of the films that we managed to savour in our two and a half days.More In a scene from “The Great flowing River", Li Mai asks that the character meaning •struggle* h- written on her hand.r Corleone: Giuliano Gemma and the bovw with story of a remarkable child who decides at the age of three not to grow up.Rejecting the society of adults, he becomes a dwarf who clings tenaciously to a toy drum which he uses to set his own pace. And he defends himself from the adult world by a high-pitched scream that shatters glass Visually, the impact of LE TAMBOUR is overwhelming The characters, almost larger than life, dramatize the dilemma of Poles.Germans and, particularly, the "Kabouchen”, neither Germans nor Poles, living in “the free city” of Danzig through the Nazis' rise to power and subsequent downfall The acting is flawless Twelve-year-old David Bennent handles the demanding role of Oscar, who.at the film’s end reaches the age of 21, with determined control Oscar’s grandmother is an exquisite portrait of the “kabouch” whose life is rooted in the potato fields where her only daughter is conceived And Oscar’s mother.an earthy-voluptuous woman torn between passion and the need for security is the incarnation of a tormented, if sometimes ecstatic existence Little Oscar leads us through the world of startling images of personal and social tur moil According to the dire 'tor, Volket Schlon-dorf, “A film based on THF: TIN DRUM had to be a fresco, world history seem from and lived on the bottom rung: enormous spectacular painting gathered together by the tiny Oscar For me, this character portrays two typically contemporary qualities: rejection and protest. This ever present revolt of the child against the grown-up world ” For us it is another example of a movie that demands a reading of the book THE SEDUCTION OF’ JOE TYNAN Four years ago, Alan Alda began to work on a screenplay about a politician whose family life suffers at the expense of his political ambitions. Its working title.THF: SENATOR.This week the completed film, THE SEDUCTION OF JOE TYNAN, had its international premiere to sold-out audiences, although it was not in the running for World Film Festival honours. There is nothing particularly original about the story, it’s been told before The acting and direction is smooth and skilled Joe Tynan is seduced by the glitter of power His own conviction of right and wrong are sacrificed at an opportune moment to capture national recognition Although he loves his wife, she does not share his love of politics, so he turns for companionship to a woman who does In the process, what he cares most about, his family, is sacrificed According to Alda, the problem is resolved in the end with the recognition that, although Tynan will continue to seek power, his family must not be sacrificed But mercifully, the audience is left to draw its own conclusions and this is perhaps the best part of the story. But a more detailed review waits this film’s appearance at the local theatre, as it no doubt will, sooner or later.Of special note is the skill of Rip Torn as a southern senator Torn is an actor w ho has never received his due acclaim. If you saw the T V.serialized special, BLIND AMBITION, you will undoubtedly remember his portrayal of Richard Nixon.THE GREAT FLOWING RIVER With THE GREAT FLOWING RIVER, the People’s Republic of China shows it has exceptions, one just doesn’t bump into them on the street or even in the foyer Upon arrival at the Meridian Hotel, part of the Place Desjardins complex and home base for the Festival, we saw Michel MONTREAL (CP) -American culture has two conflicting messages, says actor Alan Alda, who has just written and starred in a feature film on that theme “One is that family and personal values come first and the other is that you must do everything you can to be a success.” Alda himself is a success as a television star, portraying the wise-cracking surgeon Hawkeye in the program M A S H , soon to begin its eighth season And he is also happily married with three teenage daughters, he told reporters during his visit this week to Montreal’s third annual World Film Festival But he said he knows the dangers of a culture that values family and success equally.‘‘The two can be mutually exclusive, and if you don’t know what you want, you are liable to be the servant of two masters,” he said.“You’ll suffer, and the people around you will suffer, because you’ll be at cross purposes ” His latest film. The Seduction of Joe Tynan, is being shown at the festival and scheduled for general release in Canada this fall.Alda plays a liberal young senator from New York named Joe Tynan who wears reading glasses like Ted Kennedy’s.‘‘Joe Tynan isn’t a political picture.” Alda said, looking more like a diplomat than either a senator or a film writer, with his trim haircut and pinstriped suit.“It’s a personal story about a crisis in a person’s life and I think the key to the solution for a man like him is knowing the cost of doing what he’s doing.” What Tynan’s doing is falling in love with a civil-rights lawyer played by Meryl Streep — the blonde from The Deer Hunter and Manhattan — while trying to keep his wife, played by Barbara Harris. But he is even more seduced by his own ambition and has to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of betraying a friend to get ahead ‘‘I don’t and Triumph” by Edgar Johnson (PENGUIN): $4.95, 601 pp.The centenary of Dickens’s death in 1970 was notable for the increase of publishing activity dealing with the life and times of the man generally regarded as the greatest of the English novelists - as Johnson says in his new preface: “The unifying thread of his entire career was a critical analysis of the nineteenth-century society unsurpassed hy any novelist in grasp or scope”.The biographical material brought to light as a result of the heightened attention has been reworked by Edgar Johnson, and his massive, definitive biography of Dickens has been revised and abridged in a paperback Penguin edition published in 1979 Johnson’s masterly tale matches the spirit and exuberance for life of his subject, and the length of the original 1953 edition has been greatly abridged due to the removal of the exhaustive critical chapters included on each of the major works. What remains is indeed the best-crafted, most authoritative study of the Victorian novelist As a new generation of readers discovers Dickens, it is appropriate that his life receives the scrutiny of new biographers who may profit from the flurry of activity which an ever-expanding Dickens market makes available The most recent “life”, is that written by Norman and Jeanne Mackenzie The Mackenzies have fashioned a highly readable portrait of the novelist, which wins admiration for the smooth flow of its narration -particularly through the confusing mass of detail surrounding the maze of contracts, agreements, and promises of books to come which the young and irrepressible Dickens enveloped himself in during the early years of his publishing career The Mackenzie biography is particularly lucid in its documentation of the American journey which Dickens embarked upon on January 4.1842 Once he docks in Boston, the narrative moves swiftly and entertainingly along as Boz moved the Americans to frantic adulation or barely suppressed anger over his outspoken opposition to the piracy tactics of Yankee publishers while the young American nation had thrilled to Pickwick and Oliver and Nickleby, the pocket of Dickens had not been fattened by as much as one red cent The Mackenzies keep the long passages from the copious letters of Dickens and his contemporaries to a minimum, which perhaps adds to the impression of a fast-moving.rapidly-developing life As interesting as the early portion of the book may be, it is the final twelve years of the novelist's life which are the most revealing about the Dickens who has been transmogrified from the man that emerged from John Forster’s rather sterile biography (1872-1874) Forster’s refusal to accurately portray the final years of Dickens’s life, which he lived apart from his wife Catherine, (who had been replaced by the young actress Ellen Lawless Ternan), was as much a result of the Victorian morality as it was attributable to any deviousness on the writer’s part Forster had been, after all, one of Dickens’ closest friends, and had fulfilled the role of advisor and literary agent More recent biographies are quite clear in their treatment of the Dickens’s separation, and there is in the warts which Dickens as a mere mortal had.than there is to gloss over his less than fair treatment of family and friends alike The result is a more realistic portrait, without the absolute aura of godlike infallibility that earlier studies of Dickens suggested by their total devotion to his craft, while ignoring the petulant, bullheaded side of the man that emerges from the Mackenzie’s study Edgar Johnson’s revised edition of the Dickens story will remain the work against which newer efforts will be measured.Norman and Jeanne Mackenzie’s biography of Dickens is an engaging, honest approach to a life that offers a sizeable challenge to writers who have to come to grips with the man whose careers included popular novelist, journalist, magazine editor, amateur theatricals manager, philanthropist, publisher and stage performer whose success was unparalleled on the Victorian stage A life of Dickens is as much an examination of a Victorian captain of industry, as it is the noting of the literary achievements of the writer who is to the English novel as Shakespeare is to the stage “The Coup” by John Updike (RANDOM HOCSE): $11.75, 299.pp.It’s a long way from the comfortable middle-class American homes that are the usual haunts of John Updike, to the crazy, tropical land of Kush, in the centre of the emerging African nations Readers who followed the Pennsylvanian and New England protagonists of the early Updike fiction will be at first dismayed by the remark able progression to the hero of “The Coup - Colonel Hakim Felix Ellellou. The Colonel is a strange hybrid of his own customs, and those of the Americans for whom he has a bitter, sardonic scorn, and not a little of the satiric eye of his creator, when it comes to the morals and mores of the giant capitalist nation that dominates Kush Ellellou knows the Americans well, having spent four years at McCarthy College, in the quaint mid-American town of Franchise, Wisconsin. In fact, the scenes in which Ellellou verbally jousts with the Archie Bunker cloned father of his white female friend Candace Cunningham.allow Updike to return to his metier - the rhythms of speech, social hangups, and crass bravado of middle-class Americans is the comfortable area Updike knows and describes best The early portion of this novel features some of the most torturous prose to be found in any of the Updike books The style is deliberately over-written, one assumes, in order that the mind of Ellellou will be accurately revealed in the first and third person narration blend which Updike has chosen for “The Coup'* The comedy of the book is found in the desperate struggle of the people of Kush as they are pulled between the Americans and the Russians in a modern day imperialist scenario As a departure from Updike’s proven style, “The Coup” is a success.Ellellou is a fascinating character, and the author has done a remarkable job in researching the topography and customs of the African nations The story is perhaps inspired by the lunacy of Idi Amin and some of the more outrageous of the African leaders Updike is unrelenting in his satire of the Africans and also in his ruthless attacks on the money-grubbers who share citizenship with him in the United States This book lets John Updike stretch his talents and offers an entertaining look at the third world dilemma that is focusing attention on the Middle East and Africa.OFF THE RECORD Joe Egan “Out Of Nowhere” (ARIOLA-QU ALITY> It w as seven years ago that a pair of young song writers began a short-lived recording career with a song that had a catchy, Dylan-mocking, light rocking lyric and melody - “Stuck In The Middle W ith You”.Anyone who was alive in the summer of ’78 heard one half of that duo hit with “Baker Street’’ - a cleverly crafted, epic tune that will help to define that hot season for years to come Slightly more than a year later, “Out Of Nowhere” comes Joe Egan, with an unbelievable album that is as perfect a collection of modern rock you can hear Egan, former partner with Gerry Rafferty, produces songs that still embrace a melody line and that are meant to be sung, and not just to be covered with the is quite the opposite Just a terrific album and for those who can't get enough of Gerry Rafferty, this is more of the same When you pick it up look for a black and white cover, with a sketch of Joe band (and the cover art displays their respective flags in a Monty Pythonish pose), might set the listener up for some eccentric British songs.Expectations are met.as this album presents as eclectic, and diversified a pair of sides as can be currently heard in pop rock The songs defy categorization, but have some of the bizarre properties of the early “10 cc” work, with only the surfing harmonies in abeyance. While the Brinsley Schwartz Band did British versions of country rock, the style here is decidedly pop.with the emphasis on the song as art form, rather than song as social protest LES that might be unsuitable for the sheltered young queen The effect was striking - and not entirely desirable What may be proper intellectual nourishment for a strictly raised 18 year-old girl is not necessarily appropriate for all the people in the country. Also, the result was the encouragement of respectability not the rebirth of virtue The British people showed a greater interest in appearing respectable The Importance of Being Ernest is a play about respectability The opinion of one’s neighbours became all - important As a result, hypocrisy became the most important virtue. The standard of conduct in Victoria's time was extremely strict and the penalty for breaking the moral code was to be cast out from society but this meant only that one was expected to avoid getting caught Thus, the Victorian era fostered a highly repressive atmosphere It insisted on conformity. What one should not do was carefully prescribed by society And w ith this went an insincerity which came to be accepted as entirely natural, especially by the middle class. As a result, it produced a large number of people obedient to its standards but it also produced a crop of colourful eccentrics and rebels Oscar Wilde was one of those In Victorian England, W ilde was a god His words were sought and treasured His witticisms were published Wilde’s masterpiece is the Importance of Being Ernest and one of the delights of English literature. It opened in 1895 to the cheers of a fashionable London audience, that same year Wilde was ruined.Five years later he died in France, penniless and a social out cast. The Importance of Being Ernest is a perfect union of plot, character and style All blend to create something as weightless and luminous as a bubble The characters have no depth, but have wonderful vivacity and polish One element in the play is the use of misapplied logic and upside down conversation This is found in dialogue that sounds reasonable but is actually completely nonsensical.Nothing of real importance happens in the world of this play Line after line is a triumph of glittering, scintillating loquaciousness, so perfect that not a world could be changed without spoiling the effect. In fact, the actors could deliver their lines standing still on stage and the play would still be hilarious and almost like Noel Coward’s lines it really doesn’t matter who says them In this play, Wilde has made a strong and briliant development as a dramatist, at one stroke, he has eliminated the second-hand melodrama which was a mainstay of his earlier plays and of most of the plays of the 19th century, including the earlier plays of Shaw Barry MacGregor gives a wonderful performance, full of energy and vital stage presents, in the part of Algernon Moncrieff As Lady Bracknell says, “He has nothing, but he looks everything’’ John Worthing is played by Nicholas Pennell.w ho seems to be in a lot of difficulty with a injured leg and subsequently his performance was off its stride When I first saw William Hutt as Lady Bracknell a few seasons ago, I was rather nonplussed, because instead of Mr Hutt acting the part of Lady Bracknell, he was I felt, giving a performance of Dame Edith Evans playing Lady Bracknell and I really hadn’t come to the Barry MacGregor as Algernon in “The Importance Of Being Earnest” Festival to see a female impersonation act This time however.Mr Hutt has subtly altered and modified the performance and is now giving more his own portrayal of Lady Bracknell The first act is employed to introduce the characters and explain their relation to one another In the third act.all elements are sorted out and concluded The second act is the one in which complications are introduced and affairs expound upon Someone said that act two was there to kept acts one and three apart and to create a second intermission so that the theatre can sell more booze This I find not all together true, although many plays seem to drop in the second act.as it does in this play Especially in the scenes between Cecily, played by Marti Maraden and Gwendolen, played by Domini Blythe, who seem too pale to deliver Wilde’s brilliant repartee. As Gwendolen says, “In matters of real grave importance, style, not sincerity, is the vital 1 thing " Wil’iam Needles brings a certain amo> nt of life to the part of Merriman.but in the tea serving scene, w hen Miss Maraden doesn’t pick up her cues fast enough, the life becomes very broad mugging and in fact the whole scene is played by everyone on stage far too heavily for laughs' and is reduced to semi-slap stick The set is designed by Daphne Dare and is the same one used in previous seasons It is a solid looking single unit set with the dressing changed to make the set from Algernon Moncrieff's London flat to a garden in John Worthing’s country estate An acting level extends over half of the playing area and that plus the awkward arrangement of the set pieces have the actors continually squirming around the furniture to move about the set The play is directed by Robin Phillips The lighting, designed by Michael J Whitfield, is rather odd in the first act As the actors walk across the set strange shadows fall across their faces I don't know if some of the lighting instruments were burnt out or if it was some kind of lighting ef- fect If it was the latter it didn’t work and it was terribly messy 1 found the banging around off stage to make off stage noises while John Worthing is looking for his valise amateurish and an unnecessary low in this otherwise high caliber production Oscar Wilde’s, Ernest’, is.at times, almost by sterically funny and if it isn’t the highlight of the festival (which it might well be), it is certainly not to be missed this season Gene Kelley, Olivia Newton-John TOWNSHIPS WEEK — KHI., SfcPI.4.1979 Get set for 1979 Townships football ¦H MM* #¦ ¦ .V* WÊÊm U8 By MATT EIJ)EK LENNOX VILLE Autumn’s back and for many Townshippers, that means football season Sure, we’ve all been taking in the CFL on the tube every now and then and perhaps a few of us have ventured into Montreal to see the Alouettes at the Big () But there’s nothing like going out to the ball field on a crisp, clear Saturday afternoon to watch the local l)oys go at it Bishops Gaiters begin their 1979 Ontario-Quebec Intercollegiate Football Conference schedule Saturday, as do Champlain College in the CEGEP league The high schoolers are a week away from their openers, as their training camps are barely started So get out to Bishop s Stadium tomorrow af ter noon Ottawa Gee-Gees are in town to face the Gaiters — and keep tabs on the start of the high school schedule. And don’t forget, Champlain Cougars stage their home opener next weekend Gaiter backfielders go through receiving/defending drills during practise this week. Will lack of depth stall Gaiters’ pride?By MATT ELDER LENNOXVILLE There’s a strong tradition of football success that Bishop’s Gaiters’ coach Bruce Coulter must live up to each autumn at the Lennoxville campus There are few years in recent memory that Bishop's has failed to field a respectable grid squad Much of this success stems from Coulter’s leadership itself This year’s edition of the Gaiters is no exception Several key players have graduated, but that's no excuses — replacements must and have been found Whether they can match last year’s strong performance remains to be seen.A glance at the 1979 roster leaves doubts Gone are centre Dick Doucette (always an all-star).Nick Arakgi (now a good bet to become a fixture with the Montreal Alouettes), Bob Goldberger and Blair Shier.A glancing blow, it would appear, but surely four players can’t be all that serious a loss unfortunately, all were members of last season's offensive line.On the bright side.Bob Egan and Harry Webster are back to provide a sound base for what may well be a respectable unit Coulter plans to use four players two wavs — Tom Bray, Ray Heffernan.Peter Jacobsen and Webster — although not all at the same time Tim Saunders will likely start at centre and A1 Cairns replaces Arakgi at tight end In the backfield, a familiar face is back Jim Etcheverry (son of guess who) is back at the helm of the Gaiter offence after a year’s absence.Although Bruce Wilkins has graduated, Steve Bely looks likely to be a more-than adequate replacement for the all-Canadian running back He’ll be lined up alongside fullback Doug McNevan Gord Dowbiggin has transferred from the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and will be at slot back Bruce Gair and Kevin Bennett will give Etch plenty of throwing targets.Rookie Phil Charron, who made that amazing game-winning punt return against McGill last Saturday, will also see action at wide receiver On defense, everybody's back.Bray, Heffernan and Jacobsen and Webster will form a near-awesome front ° ^ _ .J - >!.4 back with the Gaiters. He played junior ball in Ontario last season Jim Etcheverrv is BOB EGAN .defensive captain four — as long as they can keep their stamina up.Another old, familiar face is back in the linebacking department.Scott Ham-merstrom, after a year’s “retirement”, will again don a purple-and-white sweater.Perennial all-star Marty Edwards and George Roy round out the linebackers The defensive backfield looks tight George Baptist, Mike Gibson.Mark Fabri and Andy King will be joined by rookies Tim King.Robbie Leyden and Bill Rowe Larry Ring will play safety this season. The kicking chores will be handled solely by Etcheverry He was a fine punter in his previous role with the Gaiters and his placekicking has raised a few eyebrows with his accuracy and consistency to date The only serious difficulty the Gaiters could face in 1979 is depth With so many players playing both ways and with one player backing up several positions in a few cases.injuries will hurt Bishop’s chances to win that elusive championship Should they stay out of the hospital.Bishop’s chances look good “If we win our division, w hich could be the toughest in the nation this year as all the other teams are stronger, then perhaps the league and Atlantic bowl championships won’t be so tough.” assistant coach Ron Perowne reasons.“The OQIFC East will be the toughest hurdle.” Step One in the quest for national fame is tomorrow when the Gaiters face the Ottawa Gee-Gees at BU.“They have a good outside game,” Perowne says.“They’re a much improved team over last year We’ll have to watch out for sideline patterns and deep curl-ins.” Kickoff at Bishop’s Stadium is 2 p.m.Not to worry, the stands WILL be open — although they will have to be rebuilt before next season, scaffolding has been installed to add support and they say all is ready for the usual throngs of rowdies.THE HUT Army,
