attempting her second voyage through the Northwest Passage This is the Manhattan's second voyage through the North West passage after a successful trip through the ice-laden channel last summer The ship's journeys as well as the implications for oil shipments through the northern passage from Alaska’s rich oil fields to east coast refineries have sparked considerable controversy over territorial sovereignty in the north as well as the dangers of massive oil pollution of northern waters Kennedy declines presidential bid WASHINGTON — (AP) — Senator Edward M Kennedy insisted anew Sunday that he will not seek the Democratic nomination for United States president in 1972.and “I would not accept a draft ' But he left the door open beyond that year.“Beyond that I have thought very little about any future political activity’’ except seeking re-election to the Senate this year The Massachusetts Democrat made his comments in a radio interview He said he had not planned to run for the presidency or vicepresidency before the accident at Chappaquiddick Island in which Mary Jo Kopechne died in the car which he was driving As to Judge James A boyie s statement that he did not believe the senator and secretary were headed for the island ferry when Kennedy's car plunged from a narrow bridge.Kennedy would offer no new comment Kennedy repeated his expression of serious reservations about President Nixon s order sending American troops into Cambodia He forecast that the Senate will reject funds for phase two expansion of the Safeguard anti-ballistic missile system because there is an increasing realization that this is an extraordinarily expensive system which cannot provide additional security It will only increase the arms race and there will be counter reaction within the Soviet Union, he added Queen gets warm cheers in stopover VANCOUVER (CP) — Queen Elizabeth.Prince Philip and Princess Anne were warmly cheered by about 1.500 people Sunday as their jet made a brief tueling stop before taking them home after a nine-week South Pacific tour Their British Overseas Airways V-10 jetliner touched down at 4 07 p m Pacific time, and took off 53 minutes later Another fueling stop was planned at Gander.Nfld .before the royal family arrives home today The three royal visitors left Australia earlier Sunday after the Queen opened a new airport at Sydney They were greeted here by Premier W A C Bennett.Lieu tenant-Governor John Nicholson and their wives Also in the receiving line were deputy provincial secretary Laurie Wallace and local dignitaries The public saw the royal visitors as they walked from the plane to a private lounge in the airport terminal Air strikes intensified in Cambodia WASHINGTON (UP) Intensified United States air strikes in North Vietnam and a second blunt U.S warning to Hanoi today increased uneasiness and alarm in Congress over President Nixon's decision to extend the Southeast Asian war to Cambodia But the Nixon administration maintains that the new air raids against North Vietnam, like tiie attack by U.S ground forces into Cambodia, are not an escalation of the war While U.S officials stressed the strikes in North Vietnam were confined to military targets.Defence Secretary Laird repeated a weekend threat to recommend wider bombing of the North, if necessary Laird said Saturday he would recommend a resumption of the bombing if Hanoi launched any major action across the demilitarized zone separating North and South Vietnam in retaliation for the president's dispatch of U.S.troops last Thersday into Cambodia.REPEATS WARNING Laird reiterated this warning in an interview published today in the U.S.News and World Report Ris threats coincided with official U.S.disclosure that U.S.fighter-bombers have been striking during the last few days at missile and anti-aircraft sites in North Vietnam in retaliation for attacks on American reconnaissance planes, which are unarmed but are accompanied by armed fighter support The attacks were not connected.officials said, with Laird's warning of a possible resumption of bombing of the North, halted by President Johnson in November.1968 as part of “an understanding with Hanoi Laird said in the interview The (November.l%8i understanding provided that there would be no bombing north of the demilitarized zone if the other side did not shell population centres or infiltrate through the zone, or did not interfere with the reconnaissance activities of the U.S.in North Vietnam. If the understandings are broken—if there is massive infiltration.or if there are other actions taken by the other side —I certainly wouldn't hesitate to recommend to the president that he pursue a different policy ” BOMBINGS PROTECTIVE Sunday, Vice-President Spiro T Agnew called the weekend bombings on North Vietnam protective reaction State Secretary William Rogers, saying much the same thing called the bombings “suppressive fire Agnew asserted that the air attacks and the Cambodia incursion are moves designed to protect the security of American units in South Vietnam—the position set by President Nixon Thursday. The Viet Cong and North Vietnamese are attempting to extend their supply and sanctuary areas used by their troops fighting in South Vietnam to the Gulf of Siam which.Agnew said, seriously threatens the security of American forces and the president’s policy of withdrawing U.S troops from the war zone We know we can t win a land war in Southeast Asia, that’s perfectly obvious,” he said in explaining what he termed the limited objectives of the Cambodian action Miles for millions attracts thousands Thousands of Canadians swarmed along highways, country roads and city streets across tin* country this weekend to demonstrate their love job to be thusly attired because she’s an anaesthetist, no less! And lady anesthetists are a very rare breed.Doctor Smart was born in Invergorden.Ross-Shire, Scotland She studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Then a most interesting event took place She married Hamish Smart in 1952.and they had five children, all girls, and TWO sets of twins It would seem that it isn’t only her medical work that’s different! When the Smart family came to Canada, they lived with an aunt in Foster, and one day Hamish decided to apply for work at the Sherbrooke Hospital He started in July.1953, and was followed shortly after by Margaret, who began as an intern. When her five years had elapsed and she was a Canadian citizen, she began as a general practitioner and anaesthetist. We have a husband and wife team, and this is a rarity, so we think that we are very fortunate to have this unit at the hospital, and a close-knit unit they are too. When asked the all important question, what does she think the hospital needs desperately Doctor Smart had three words to say.“Another anaesthetic machine!” Well, machines, no matter how small ok large they may be.take space, and space costs money The Sherbrooke hospital cares enough to keep up with changing times, and new equipment is part of this change.Do you care enough to help during our annual campaign ’ We like to think so.because it’s your hospital! long, circuitous route to get into fashion designing in his native city But he’s already well embarked on his career at the aft ci tt When he finished high school he went to London where he studied two years at Hornsey College of Art, which has a dress design department Then he took off for Israel for what he intended to be a three-week holiday But once there he felt he couldn't face another London winter, so he worked for six months on a kibbutz, or co-operative farm From there he took a boat to Turkey and Greece before returning to London Strapped for money, he started washing dishes in a pub from 8pm to midnight for about $3 a night During the day he became a part-time book-keeper for a wholesale meat market at $60 a week, and managed the odd modelling job He saved up enough to get him home and bring gifts for his familv as well After this rather unusual approach to fashion Hugh attended the Fashion Arts Acad emy in Montreal That was in 1965 But he wanted to get back to Europe again, so he wrote ahead to nine top designers for interviews and landed in Italy with a portfolio of sketches DIDN’T LIKE ROME “I was sure they’d set the fashion world on fire,” says Hugh He did get form of elaborate wood structures or as igloos they built themselves. One explanation for this never-ending interest comes from Dr Robert Simmons, staff child psychiatrist at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto who said “School-age children find playhouses an opportunity to live in a fantasy of the real world ” He said that they build the real world of adults and live in it.thus projecting themselves into that world He added that doing this helps them to cope with the adult world when they are grown Dr Simmons said that the houses give youngsters a chance to play whatever role they wish, be it that of the mother, the father, or a fireman Miss Margaret Walker, head psychiatric nurse at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, believes that children use the houses to re-enact the family scene and that boys in particular might use them to play out a sense of adventure and fantasy “They might pretend they are in Africa, or at The North Pole .she commented Whatever the special psychological reasons for liking playhouses, most children will be delighted with the instant” playhouse of plastic film being offered across Canada as a HOUSEWIVES' BEST FRIEND ft-iii friweF rive £
