The other officials are G .L.De Lottinvilb», Clerk of the Crown and Peace, Sheriff McIntosh, High Constable M e.Messrs J.S.Broderick and J .E Genest represent the Crown. The Court room was crowded with gen tlemen from the district who are in alien dance in answer to the summons from the Sheriff to attend as jurors. It was half past two o’clock when the Hon.Mr.Justice Lemieux and Hon.Mr.Justice White took their seats on the Bench. The swearing in of the following Grand Jurors was then proceeded with : A.M.Greenshields.(foreman), 0.W.Libby, A.Gadbois, J.P.Gendreau, S.A.Hunting, A.Lanctôt, A.B.Lyster, W.W.Morency, John Macdonald, Jos Massie, A Morency, Jas.Macdonald.His Honor Mr.Justice Lemieux then addresse the Grand Jury.He said : Gentlemen of the Grani Jury.A term of the Court of Queen’s Bench, (Crown Side,) is always a notable event in a district. It is in fact the occasion when prominent citizens like you are called upon, in the name of the law, to participate in the administration of justice and to hold the grand juJicial inquest into the offence and crimes which have been committed against the property, persons or liberty of individuals.Among other benefits which we, citizens ofCinada, have found beneath the folds of the British fi »g, is the institution of the Jury, which offers us an almost infallible guarantee of the munteoance or vin dication of individual rights. In apportioning between a certain number of right minded men the responsibility of the judicial decisions affecting liberty and sometimes decreeing the death of our fellow men.In educating and elevating the man of the people by associating him with the functions of the Judge, so that he becomes funiliar to a groate • extent with the working of Justice and acquires a higher appreciation of the dignity of the law Ccurta and understands better all the majesty of the laws of hi' Sovereign, passed in Legislative Assemblies by his representatives, who are charged with the noble mission of c «ntributing to the moral development of the well being of the country.None of you have made default and this is an appreciation of the honor conferred up>n you, of which I am convinced you will show yourself worthy by fulfilling your duties with firmness, independence and consciousness.I shall briefly explain to you some of your dut e*.It is your duty and within your power to make inquiries into all the crimes committed in this district and into all such as may be tried therein, and to make a report of the same either by indictment or by presentment. An indictment is a written accusation Hid after the necessary examination by the Grand .Fury, before a competent Court and imputing to someone a public offence.A presentment on the other hand is a simple report made by the Grand Jury to the Court, acqurinting it with the commission of a crime in the district and declaring that it has reason to believe that such or such person named or desig nated has committed the said crime. The foreman of the Grand Jury or any member of the Grand Jury who may for the time being act on behalf of the fore naan in the examination of witnesses may administer an oath to every person who appears before such Grand Jury to give evidence in support of any bill of indictment. The name of every witness examined or intended to be examined will be endorsed on the bill of indictment ; and the foreman of the Grand Jury or any member of the Grand Jury so acting for him shall write his initial against the name of each witness sworn by him and examined to making such bill of indictment. After having examined the witnesses or some of them, if seven of you, at least, are of opinion that the person accused is guilty of the offence indicted, then the Cnairman endorses the indictment with the words “True Bill ’ and signs it.If you believe that the indictment is not well founded or that the evidence is not such as to justify a public trial, the endorsement is in the same way, but with the words “No bill.’* Youi finding is not final. It does not carry with it the decision of “guilty.” Your duty is simply to declare according to your oath whether a crime has been committed, or whether the person to whom the crime is imputed has committed it or contributed in any way thereto,or,at least, whether the appearances militate so strongly against the accused that he should be put upon his trial before the Petit Jury, in order that it may pronounce upon his innocence or his guilt. You are bound by your oath to maintain the most absolute secrecy as renards your deliberations and to reveal the object thereof to no one.In order to facilitate the performance of your task, the Court and its officers will deem it their duty to give you at all times such advice as you may need.None of the offences inscribed in the Cilendar of these Assizes call for parricu Ur explanation or definition. The limited number of indictments to come before you speak well to a certain extent for the state of public morals in this district, and for the respect of its citizens for the laws.In this section of the country, inhabited by different nationalities, belonging to different creeds, respect for the law is the surset guarantee of the union and good understanding that must prevail amongst people living under the same coustitution, which grants to each the privilege of speaking his own language and worshipping God in his own way, without fear of being disturbed by the malev lent fanaticism of a neighbor. The Clerk of the Court then handed the indictment and the Grand Jury retired. The Petit Jury were then called, after which K Gagnon, Thus.St*nhope, and A.Martineau, who were out on nail were called and the Court ac journed until four o'clock in the afternoon.Taxidermist Ferrets Collection of Birds and Animals accepted by the Government for the Paris Exhibition.Prof.Halkett lias accepted Mr Pvrret’s collection of deer head»,moose hesd^,birds and animals, on behalf of Mnj Gorùeau, Deput) Minister i f Marine and Fisheries, and the Commissioner controlling the F is hT & Game exhibit at Paris The Prof who has travelled from ocean to ocean in search of mammals ard v« r e-brateft, is enthusiastic over the collection and states that owing to the wonderfully clever work disylayed by Mr.Perret, in the mounting of the specimens, the exhibit will occupy a place of honor in the Fish & Game section at Pans, and will undoubtedly be a big advertisement for Sherbrooke and the Eastern Townships.Much praise is due the Assistant Secretary ot the Commission, Mr.Broderick, through whose efforts the Commissioners decided to secure the collection.PRESENCE OF MIND MAN’S LIFE.SAVES POPULAR HCROSSE CAPTAIN COMES IN AT THE RIGHT MOMENT.When the Grand Trunk express was pulling out of Bonaventure Depot last night for Portland, a pahsenger attempted to board the cir next to (he Pullman.Instead of taking hold of the front rail of the platfarm he caught the rear one, with the result that he was swung in between the Pullm n and first class coach.Speed was increasing, when Mr.T.J.Mrguire, of Sherbrooke, who happened to he following close behind, saw the danger and, with great presence of mind, he caught hold of the man and with almost superhuman strength threw him on to the platform of the car.The act saved the passenger in quention from a
