Sherbrooke, was liand-ed in on Monday night at the Council meeting, has for the long period of about thirty-two years well and faithfully served the city.He lias witnessed the growth of the city from its very'infancy, and was in 1852 appointed secretary-treasiirer at the time of the first organization of town incorDurations in that year, and was therefore Sherbrooke's first secretary-treasurer.In 3854 he resigned from that office and spent five years in in the Western States.^ Returning to Sherbrooke in 1859 he entered into partnership with the the late W.L.Felton, forming the law firm of Felton A Griffith. In 1871, when the late Andrew Smith died, he was re-apnointud secretary-treasurer of the town of Sherbrooke, and on the incorjxjra-tion of Sherbrooke as a city in 1879 he was re-appointed secretary-treasurer of the city of Sherbrooke, which office he has held down to the present time tot/he satisfaction of the community and citizens. His obliging and cheery disposition made him very popular in the city offices, and the citizens generally will regret to learn ti at failing health compels him to withdraw from public liie.st Francis District sociation. As ANNUAL MEETING HELD suspension bridge, one of which has just been opened for traffic at Easton, Pa., a sketch of which with details has been sent us.The bridge presents a very graceful outline and at the same time is so constructed as to connect two parts of the town that have a difference in elevation of 95 feet.Mr.Tyrrell we can almost claim as a Sherbrooke boy as he is the son-in-law of Mr.G.G.Bryant.SHKBBROOKE Church.Danville, $8.50 ; Bishop’s College Chapel $12.35; St.Alban s Church, Seots-tOWD, $0.10 ; Baptist Church, Coat-cook, $2\ Methodist Church, Marbletou, $5 ; Christ Church, Kingsey, $2.42.Nurses town, $6.THE RESULT ON FRIDAY.The result of the hard work of the past two weeks, put in by both political parties of Sherbrooke County, is being looked forward to with considerable interest. The fact that so many seats has gone by acclamation lias had the effect of swinging many to the side ot the Government, and it looks as it the Liberal candidate will be returned for Sherbrooke County* Dr.Pelletier is a man that is highly respected by all classes of the electors, and this will tell very much in his favor. He would repiesent the county in an able manner, and the interests of the electors would be in good hands- Being on the side of the Government he could put before them any application with much more freedom than a member of the op|K>sition.>V t believe that the electors of Sherbrooke County will not condemn a Government, that has a record such as no previous government has ever attained, by returning a Con servative member. From the re-l>orts subniited from the various polling divisions in the county the only deduction that can be placed is that the Conservative stronghold has at last given way to the repeated and persistent attacks of tlie Liberals.v H.HENKKKK S to be done.My resignation as Chancellor last summer, though ’t did not take effect at once on being presented to the members of the l niversity, but was postponed in order tliat a Aiew Chancellor might be appointed.1 received at the time many kind words from the distinguished men who were present when 1 expressed my desire to be relieved From the care .pf office, and 1 telt almost overwhelmed by the eulogies passed on my work during the 22 years of my services.I do not wish for any renewal of these kind words* .though I a?n still almost overpowered by so Di-any tokens ol good-will on the part of those who were present on the occasion. My firtft duty to-day will be to confer the degree of D.C.L-.» Honoris Causa, on the new Principal ot the College, who was so lately installed by a solemn service in the College Chapel, and who has already given proof of his success in the friture, by his administration since the term opened. On all sides, and from al/ hands, professors and students of the College, as well as from the school staff and the school boys, the testimony is strongly in his favor. This assuredly is a matter of congratulation, and I am sure all present will join with me in heartfelt wishes that his career in this country may be such as to cause him never to regret the step he has taken, and that the people of the country, who seek a high class training for the intellectual walks of life, may recognize in him a scholar and a gentleman, not only tit to teach others, but most willing to devote his talents to the welfare of the Canadian public.—(applause).,
