Sold everywhere and everyone knows what it is.Season closes 18th.The members of the Cabinet, grief-stricken, were gathered in the large drawing-room of the Mil-burn House. The time had come when they, too, were to look upon * * the President for the last time in life. They ascended the stairway one after the other, noiselessly approaching the threshold of the chamber where the dying man lay, and gazed within. Those who came first turned back appalled and overwhelmed, and did not pass within the chamber.Secretary Wilson remained below, un ill willing to have imprinted on his memory the picture of his expiring chief.Secretary Lonp, who had arrived on a late train, went at once to the chamber and passed directly to the bedside of the President, grasping the hand that was already clammy with approaching death.PULSELESS AND UNCONSCIOUS.Meantime the President had lap sed to a state of complete unconsciousness, and it was only a question of hours, perhaps minutes, when the end would come.By ten o’clock there was no perceptible pulse. The extremities had grown cold, and the rigidity of death was fast falling upon the sufferer. The physicians who remained at his side detected only the faintest heart beats. Some of them departed, knowing that all was over, £ ?S3 I 1 33 $ while others lingered by the deathbed.Dr.Janeway.the eminent heart specialist, who had been summoned from New York, arrived shortly before midnight, and proceeded at once to the bedside of the President. An instant’s glance told him the time had passed for the slightest hope He turned away, telling the assembled rel atives and officials the end was very near.Midnight came and still the tremendous vitality of the President was battling against dissolution.Another hour passed so, and still another ENTERING THE SHADOW.At two o’clock Dr.Rixey was the only physician in the death chamber. The others were in an adjoining room, while the relatives, Cabinet officers and nearest friends were gathered in silent groups in the apartments below. As lie watched and waited Dr.Rixey observed a slight, convulsive tremor. The President’s spirit was entering the valley of the shadow of death.Word was at once taken to the immediate relatives who were not present to hasten for the last look upon the President’s life. They came in groups, the women weening and the men bowed and sobbing in their intense grief., SLEEP’S TWIN BROTHER The minutes were now flying and it was 2.15 o’clock.Silent and motionless the circle of loving friends stood about the bedside.Dr.Rixey leaned forward and placed his ear close to the breast of the dying President. Then he straightened up and made effort to speak.“The President is dead,” he said.He had passed away peacefully, without the convulsive struggle of death. It was as though he had fallen asleep. As they gazed on the face of tne martyred President only the sobs of the mourners broke the silence of this chamber of death.Mr.Cortelyou had been one of the first to rouse himself after the stunning effect of the announcement of death. He passed from the room and down the stairway. There in a large drawing room were still assembled ^ the members of the Cabinet, officials high in the administration and in the confidence of the President. As he appeared at the threshold of the room they seemed to realize that the message of death had come.Mr.Cortelyou halted at the door and summoning up all his efforts, said: _ ,, .“Gentlemen, the President has passed away.” Realizing, too, the momentous nature of the event to the people of the country, Mr.Cortelyou stepped through the outer doorway of the Milburn house and advancing down the walk to the newspaper men at the front gate, calmly announced: “The President died at 2.1.) o’clock.” Thus closed the final chapter in the life of William McKinley.FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS.As to the funeral arrangements but little could be determined dur- (Continued on page 2.) BABY IN THE HOME.A Joy and Treasure When Good Naturaed and Healthy. All children in every home in the country need at some time or other a medicine such as Baby’s Own Tablets, and this famous remedy has cured many a serious illness and saved many a little life.Mothers insist upon having it because it contains no opiate having drugs. It is purely vegetable, sweet and pleasant to take and prompt in its effect. For simple fevers, colic, constipations, disordered stomach, diarrœa irritation accompanying the cutting of teeth and indigestion, Baby’s Own Tablets are a certain cure.In fact in almost any disorder common to children these tablets should be given at once and relief may be promptly looked for.Never give the babies so- called soothing medicine which simply put them into an unnatural sleep. These tablets are small, sw eet, pleasant to take and prompt in acting.Dissolved in water, they will be taken readily by the smallest infant.Mrs.John McEwan, Bathurst Village, N.B., writes : “My baby w’as almost constantly troubled with colic before I gave him Baby’s Own Tablets, but since giving them to him he has not since suffered.Every mother should keep these tablets always at hand.” They cost 25 cents a box.You can find them at your druggist's or if you do not, forward the money direct to us and we will send the tablets prepaid. The Dr.Williams* Medicine Co., Dept.T.f Brockville victim of a dastardly crime by one of the vilest of villains. The most famous surgeons of the great Republic could not save the deceased and he passed away, peacefully submitting to the Divine will of his Creator, in whom he placed implicit trust. Thus another noble soul has been added to the honor list of the many who have gone before, a great nation is suddenly bereft of its greatest citizen, and a good wife of an ideal husband. In the death of William McKinley our neighbors to the south of us have been deprived of a lofty character and a wise ruler, one in whom the masses had the fullest confidence, — perhaps more so than any other since the days of Abraham Lincoln. The past week has been a painful one and the strain on the nation has been great.A vigilant watch was kept at the dying bedside by the whole civilized world until the life that ebbed so slowly but yet so surely had taken its flight. The loss of this great man is our loss as well as those of our neighbors, for exalted and noble characters like that of him who is gone are hard to find, therefore the sympathy of every Canadian goes out to them in this their sad hour of afiliction.THE ROYAL TOUR.The Ophir At
