opened L’ Councillor Fuller read-i i g a let ; ec from a Mr.Millar, who fives on Portland avenue, in which he states that for the past week in the house where he was stopping there was not enough water to flush the drains. The writer also contended that this alone was sufficient to cause an epidemic of typhoid fever, and warned the Council that if he was taken sick with typhoid fever he would sue the City for damage.“ I have also had several verbal complaints about citizens in the North ward not getting a sufficient supply of water, and I think the matter ought to be looked into/’ said Councillor Fuller.Councillor Jenckes, chairman of the Water Department, gave an explauation as to why the water was shut off last week in that section of the city. For two days the water was shut off on Quebec street so that they could make connections, but the residents there were notified that it would be cut off, and provision w as made so that they could have water morning, noon and night.“This is the first complaint that I have heard,” said the chairman, “and if any one did not get water they should have notified the Water Department and their complaint would have received attention.” Explaining further, Councillor Jenckes said that the water tower was erected for fire purposes anil the high levels on Quebec street only. Both Councillor Fuller and Councillor Lanctot contended that the water tower was not fulfilling the purpose for w hich it was erected, and the former bought that an investigation should be held.Councillor Jenckes.—I am quite willing that an investigation should be held. After a good deal of ltols firing.Councillor Jenckes stated that it would be impossible to connect the tower with the whole system. In the first place, by so doing, the water would come direct trom the river and the citizens would be using water that would not have had a chance to be filtered. The City’s object was to improve the water, and if this method was followed that would be no improvement.Another thmg.if they used the tower for the whole city there might be an accident to the pumps and the city would be without water. As it was now they had only a five day’s supply in the re servoir, and they could undertand into what position the city would be placed in the event of a big fire and an accident occured to the pumps.Mention had been made that the insurance companies gave them a low rate on account of their water service but he would inform those councillors that were criticising the works that that never entered into the consideration of the insurance companies. That rate was given because after the new* and la g r moins were put in, the fire protection was improv eii by about 75 per cent He again repeated that the tower was for the high levels, and for service in case of fire.Much as he would ike to see the Sacred Heart Hospital connected, it would be impossible to do so unless a direct main was made with the reservoir. The pressure on the water mains by the tower being connected would be so great that they would be having accidents all the time. They were working at the improvements as rapidly as they possibly could, but too/ must under stand that they could not open new services for citizens and follow up their improvements rapidly. It was impossible to do so because they could jiot get enough men.Supt.Tremblay, in answer to some question, repeated, in the main, what the Chairman had stated 1 and remarked that when the water was cut off the residents in the neighbourhood were noti fied.He had heard no complaint about the water being shut of! until he saw it in the papers. It was suggested by Councillor Fortier that the party complaining should be written to, explaining how it was that the water was shut off, but .it was pointed out that the party in question was not a ratepayer, but a boarder, and that he had only been a resi dent in the city for a short time.“ He only wants to let the city know that if he takes typhoid fever he will sue the city,” remarked one of the Councillors. The letter was allowed to lie on the table, TAMMANY IS BEATEN Republican • Fusion Ticket Elected in Greater New York I New Raisins, New Currants, 5 New FiQS.•5 BRAY BROS.! Councillor Fortier, having been a p-pointed at a recent meeting of the Council to interview Mr.Joncas m regard to what he would ask for his property on Market street, and which is required by the city the Council thought that as Mr.Joncas would not accept the price offered by the city that they expropriate the property under resolution of the council passed at a previous meeting. The Widening of Factory Street, The Sisters of the Holy Family notified the city that they will not accept less than $1000 for the portion of their property required for the widening of Factory street, and $200 the Holv Family, that the amount of land required amounted to about 2081 square feet, which was considerably more than was anticipated. It was moved by Councillor Lanctot, seconded by Councillor Fortier, that this amount be given for the property provided that the building be removed within two months.LENN0XVILLE STUDENTS RAID THE VILLAGE.cil on Monday night: “Quebec, Oct.22, 191—Sir—Hav ing acquired by the city, and known as the Beckett Block, was presented, but it was decided to have the Mayor interview the interested parties and inform them that the council does not propose to assume all the responsibilities between the tenants, neither do they propose to pay the taxes prior to July as asked for by the vendors. It was explained by the Mayor that all the tenants could be got out
