The boy does as directed. It happens that neither man has attained the luxury of a desk set.Accordingly, when Jones is informed by his boy that Mr.-Smith wants to talk to him over the telephone he lays aside what he is doing and walks to the instrument. There he hears the familiar "Hold the wire a minute, please," and waits patiently, or perhaps Impatiently, until Smith Is notified that Mr.Jones 1« "on the wire," and goes to the telephone In his turn.Jones has wasted some minutes of his valuable time.Smith, on the other hand, has lost no time.He could have saved Jones the waiting by directing his boy to call up Jones’ office and ascertain if he were In.Receiving an affirmative answer, he could then have stepped to the telephone and called for Jones, waiting himself until Jones responded. But In that case Smith would have waited, and Smith doesn’t care to stand around any more than Jones .does.Idttle vexations, like great prob-! lems, depend so much on the point of view. What we need is a system of rules that shall be equally respected by Smith and Jones, whether either be the seeker or the sought.Interesting Items.A young swell wore a new style evening « at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York the other night. It waa a ewal-low-tail, with velvet collar and a pocket for a handkerchief in the left breast.A tiny lace handkerchief peeped from the pocket.A man advertises In a Syracuse paper for a Job as gen -ial housework servant. He la a widower, familiar with ail phases of housekeeping, and aays that he can pickle, w'ash, and iron, enact the parts of the cook and the waitress, mind the baby, dust, and take care of the furnaoe. It is a good advertisement for vegetarianism that a pedestrian who doesn’t eat meat came in first in the international walking-match between Berlin and Dresden The winner made the one hundred and twenty-five miles in the record-breaking time of twenty-seven hours, thirteen minutes, and fourteen and one-half seconds. The New York "Commercial Advertiser'* estimates that Andrew Carnegie’s benefactions, up to date, amount to $68,000,000, distributed in the following order: United States, $55/361,673; Scotland, $18,078,750; Canada, $876,500; Cuba, | $262,000; Ireland.$65,500.And yet, Mr.Carnegie’s wealth is said to be Increasing more rapidly than he can give it away, owing to the enormous earnings of the properties whose securities he holds. In his book on "The Private Life of the Sultan," Mr.Georges Dorys says that during the Armenian massacres it cost the Turkish treasury the equivalent of about $1,000,000 for hush money, or "allocations," to certain European newspapers, besides the distribution of six hundred and forty costly decorations placed where they would do the most good.Abdul Hamid seemed to believe firmly in the cynical saying of Walpole that every man has his price.Miss Azalene Earle, formerly of Portland, Oregon, but latterly a "hello girl" in San Francisco, is now Mrs.William Halleck Deming, and will travel in Europe with her husband this summer.Says the Portland "Oregonian:" "Mr.Deming, who is a man of wealth, was attracted by her soft and gentle voice in calling ‘Number?’ through the telephone, and acquaintance and marriage followed. If the voices of the telephone girls in this city have lately become Indistinct through muffled sweetness, the above announcement accounts for it." Thomas A.Edison thinks that in six or seven years horses will have disappeared from the streets as beasts of burden, and automobiles will be made so cheap as to be within the reach of all who wish or need vehicles. He declares this revolution will be brought about by a storage electric battery w'hlch he has invented."The man that cannot quite afford to keep a horse and carriage is the man that I am trying to provide for," he said the other day; "the automobile will be the thing for him.Its first cost will not be great, it will not require care, and the cost of maintenance will come far below the cost of keeping a horse." An interesting series of experiments has been tried by the school authorities in South Germany to test the faculty of observation as it Is exercised by boys and girls.A man dressed as an ordinary workman and with ordinary features was placed in a room by himself.Classes of girls of different ages were sent through the room. All that the teachers told them was that they were to go into the room through one door and out through another. When they returned to their classrooms they were asked to describe the man in the room.N«irly eighty per cent, of the girls confined their attention to the man's clothes; the others described both clothes and features. The same experiments when ^ried with boys revealed the fact that nearly seventy per cent, of them confined their attention to the man’s features, the remainder to both features and clothes.Prof.TF.Hodgson Plis, Official Analyst to the Dominion Government, reports that Sunlight So tp contains “no /r«e alkali,“—that means no damage to the clothes or hands.UNLIGHT V SQM» REDUCES EXPENSE AbI* fur Ike O» tagom Bar i»9 INSURANCE ÇA NADIA Ry.AIMJAL WESTERK EXCURSION - TO- DETROIT, CHICAGO and Points West.September 25th 26th and t7th, 1902, good to return leaving destination on or lie-fore O totier 13th.ISHnf.Bet urn fan* Sherhi ooke to DETROIT.MICH.- - $15.10 Cleveland.Ohio.617.60 Bay City, Mich.17.56 Saginaw, Mich.17.45 ColuiubuM, Ohio.ji.io Grand Rapids.Mich.1B.40 CHICAGO, ILL.- - - $19.20 Cincinnati.Ohio.$.*2.40 St.Paul or MinneapoliH, Minn.12 X W.H.BOTTUM, City PaM*r>er Agent.kjr% RnlkBna He-., Telat none ISO.Steamship Tickets to all Parts of the World.ÆTNA* ALU A SCR, COM MERCIA LI UXIOX.Z OUA RDI AN.HARTFORD, LANCASHIRE.LONDON.NORTH HR IT IS II , Jli;A\\ COLO, Slid all BKONCH1AL TKOU- Urae Bottle* $1.00.Meuium Site 50c.Small or Trial Sizo 25c.Kudomt-ü *>y h11 wUo tried It.Queer Cases of Heredity.BOCTOR8 disagree as to the Influence of heredity Borne hold that a great deal hinges upon it; others believe the contrary. Some of the authentic stories told to exemplify this mysterious bond between ancestors and descendants are very curious. There was a loan collection of old portraits exhibited In London lately and a young girl was among the visitors. She was an orphan and wealthy, but without near relatives, and was often heard to complain of the loneliness of her position. As she passed through the gallery one particular portrait attracted her attention and she went back to it more than once. Her companion saw In it nothing but the com-Pumplace painting of a middle aged man in the costume of the latter part of the last century.“It Is such a nice kind face,” said the girl, rather wist fully.“1 imagine my father might have looked like that had he lived” As most of the pictures were ticketed the visitors had purchased no catalogue but, before g»dug away.Miss H.bought one .it tho entrance and made a la*t visit to the portrait for which she had felt so strong an attraction. To her astonishment she found her own name opposite to its number and learned on inquiry that the original was one of her direct ancestor^ Another ot cuK coin» idem e or psycho logical phenomenon tiapponed a few years ago to a Southern statesman and financier whose family has always been of rank in his native State. This gentleman was overhauling old docu ments and letters which had been stored in a musty chest for years and intended to publish whatever might be of historic value and Interest. To his surprise he unfolded a letter yellow and time-stained, which was written In his own peculiar hand-writing, or seemed to have been written by him, although the date was two generations before his birth. The signature of the surname, which was the same as his own, was so markedly characteristic that he could scarcely believe his own hand did not pen the letters.A Loquacious Cockatoo. The most loquacious cockatoo in the world used to be owned by a civil servant In a Rlvertna township, Australia, and us this Is, perhaps, the only bird that ever shut up a political "windjammer” the Melbourne “Punch” deems Its escapade worthy to be put on record.A general election was on, and one of the candidates for the district had engaged a hall wherein to address the electors. There w’as a great attendance, and the candidate went from scratch with a rush, but at the end of five minutes was Interrupted by a thin, croaking voice, like that of a little devil suffering from whooping-cough, which called from one of the rafters : “Oh, I’m full of this !” The crowd, suddenly discovering the cockatoo on his perch aloft, laughed uproariously.A long string of Insults at the crowd came from the rafters. The candidate tried to get going again.“The man’s an ass !” was the cockatoo’s comment, and he Jerked it in after every solemn expression of the candidate’s opinion. At last the candidate’s patience gave way, and, seizing the water-bottle, he hurled it furiously at the intemperate bird.It broke a window, and excited the bird to further efforts.Picking out the candidate, he heaped reproaches and Insults upon him.The bird won; finding nothing left to throw', and unable to make any impression on the roaring audience, the politician flung himself from the hall, and the evil bird gave the last touch by calling pleasantly : “So long, so long !” The meeting forthwith carried resolution to the effect that the cockatoo was a fit and proper party to represent that district In Parliament.L.A.BAYLEY Importer.^GRANDff Exposition FOR FALL, 1902.r Carpels, Carpels.New'Designs and New Colorings in Ax minister, Velvet, Brussels, Tapestry and Wool Carpets.Rugs.Ranging in size from a door mat to a full size carpel, and price from $1 to $125 each.High Class Dress Fabrics Our own direct importations, including many Novelties that are limited in production and confined to a few of the leading houses in the trade.Samples on application.Gloves New Kid Gloves for Fall trade.New colorings, New stitchings, New buttons, both in “Glacé” and “Suede” Kid Gloves.See our $1.00 French Kid Glove during FairVeek. We guarantee this'G love." £'100,000,(MX) sterling towards the cost of the South | African war and the cost of ad mi-1 nistration. An account has been opened at the treasury and the colonies have been debited to that amount therein A loan will probably be raised, probably in the sum of £50,000,000 sterling.Taxation ot the mining industry; concessions for the sale of dynamite, etc., will contribute materially to the payment of the £100,-000,000 sterling The colonies are, however, to be allowed ample time in which to make this payment. The loan will not be floated for two or three year-4.Mining profits probably Editor of Thb Examiner.Sir,—Having heard from various sources that twenty or more boys had left our Academy and were now pursuing their studies at Sc.Charles Seminary, I took the liberty of looking into the matter last Friday.I discovered on investigation that only four boys who attended the Academy last year were attending St.Charles Seminary this year, and that in every case the reason for their so doing was that they might the better qualify themselves for commercial life.Four other boys have gone to work and two are at Stanstead. In addition to these, six girls who were in attendance at the Academy last year are this year in attendance at the Convent. It is difficult to get at the true reason for this, but if some of the parents who have withdrawn their girls from the Academy and sent them I to tne Convent have done so, sup posing they will get a better education, they are making a huge mistake. But we are glad to know, that in some cases at least, this is not the true reason.11 may bsinteresting to your readers to know exactly what branches are being taught in the higher grades of the Academy aud#what proportion of time is being given to each subject. The figures in following table show the number of hours spent over each subject:— Where is the Birchtoo corre spondent?I hope he has not been ill ever since he last told you about us.If so it is time some one was
