the developmen: of various types- of apparatus in the Soviet Union and abroad.Artificial blood circulation devices were important because hey had made it possible to treat by surgical methods nearly all types of hear* disease.* * * Professor Kovanov said the use of plattic-s in the recon-struction of blood vessels and ;heart tissues is a most complicated branch of surgery but of-jfers also a most promising field for experiment. In Professor Kovanov's opin ion, the culmination of surgical progress in the field of transplantation of organs and tissues will be the grafting of a second heart. This is being done with animals though at present their life span after bring subjected to such an operation is only 30 to 32 days.Professor Kovanov, one of the main figures in the successful crafting of a second head on 'dogs, said that the second head could exist autonomously and function on the body of the animal which received it provided I it had sufficient nourishment. For several days, the second head behaved normally and re acted to sound, pain and food.By GRAHAM COX Canadian Pras* staff Writer OUTLOOK, Sask.(CP) — A tidy little farm on the site of w hat was once Outlook's town dump will point the way to best use of irrigation from the South Saskatchewan River Dam.Even before the final agree ment wras signed and work started on the $182,000,000 dam project in central Saskatchewan, the federal -government and Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration ware getting ready. They wanted a prc-d-evelop-ment -farm to determine what effects irrigation would have on raising the potential yield in the 500,000 acres of drought-ridden land the project is to serve when it is completed in 1966.Just east of Outlook they found the location — the town’s nuisance grounds.Today the site is a neat, clean, well-managed and productive farm of 155 acres, possibly the best in the area.“We started out to prove that irrigation, properly used, could make the intended area of irrigation one of the most productive of diverse crops in Canada," said manager Ian Petrie, "and I think we have ” * * * The farm is operated on a 10-year crop rotation program using wheat, potatoes, oat.s, barley and hay.The 155 acres are roughly broken into 12 areas. There arc U> fields of 10 to 12 acres each plus 24 acres of pasture and 10 acres of farmstead with build-ings and corrals. Most of the farm-s in the area are “dry land farms” with one principal crop—wheat.Even with wheat, Mr.Petrie said, the farm was able to produce double the .provincial average of 15 to 20 bushels to the acre in 1959.During the same year the farm produced oats- at a rate of 109 bushe's to the acre, barley at 70 bushels and po aloes at about 10 tons to the acre.Under direction of Mr.Petrie, a graduate of the University of Saskatchewan school of agriculture, the farm employs two Systems of irrigation — sprinklers and flooding.« * * In the flooding process, the .ields> designated were scored with shallow ditches at about j30-foof intervals after the fields |had been levelled and graded so dre water would flow down the ditches by force of gravity. As well as growing sown crops, the farm also managed to take care of 40 head of feeder cattle during the 1959 trial period. They were grazed on irrigated pasture with their diet supplemented by grain.During a regulated 123 .day period, the catile gained about 231 pounds a bead. This worked out to 1.87 pounds a head per da> with a yield of 513 pounds for each acre grazed. The experimental period yielded a profit of $1.207 against a cost of $964 The 18 acres on which the cattle grazed produced an average profit of $67 each.A similar project was undertaken by PFRA manager Bill Herringer at Hays, Alta., where each of 17 acres grazing 43 head of cattle showed a profit of $69 under mechanical grazing with no grain fed, Another similar area showed a profit cl $110 to the acre with grain be-ng fed to catUe.* * * The mechanical grazing process is planned for the Outlook farm this year and means that feed for the animals is given to them in a long trough from a side-loading wagon.Irrigation of farms is going to be expensive initially, says Mr.Petrie.It might go as high as $50 an acre and is one of the ^reasons the more successful |farmers are n’t enthusiastic about it.i Another factor is that the government has suggested farms of about 230 acres will be the maximum allowed in the irrigated area.Mr.Petrie says he expects that many farmers will go into the feeder cattle trade, buying in the spring, fattening all summer and selling in the fall.He adds that there is also a rich potential for market garden farming that did not exist before irrigation.the diamond opening and con-linuation he
