ITS WORTH A TRIP TO MONTREAL! Show Business By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (AP) - Hollywood’s recent romance with remakes may be cooling off.For a while producers were saying “why put out big money for new properties?Let's look in the vaults.” The argument looked good.Readers could pay S5.95 for a best-selling book, but producers had to shell out considerably more (latest sale: Ship of Fools to Stanley Kramer for $500,000).Hit Plays came even dearer— Warners is putting up $5,500,000 for My Fair Lady.Besides, look at the record: Two of the three top moneymakers—Ben-Hur and The 10 Commandments — were remakes. There is nothing new about re-doing old films.Alice in Wonderland has had five film versions.Quo Vadis and The Spoilers have been turned out four times.Romeo and Juliet has also been made four times, not including the current West Side Story version. With these precedents, producers have been filming more remakes than ever before. Now the scorecard can be toted up.RETURNS NOT GOOD The returns during the last year or so have not been so good.MGM got nicked on two big ones, Cimarron and The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Both had only fair success at the box office, not enough to offset their immense i cost.Thct is a prime problem with remakes: Producers feel they must be done much more ! grandly than the originals. This urge to make remakes i bigger than before is part of | the cause for the bloated budg-j ets of Cleopatra and Mutiny on ;the Bounty. There are other elements as well — weather, temperament, etc.But these two most expensive films in history reflect the thinking that immense cost justifies remakes.Meanwhile the fate of two great studios is in the balance.INVERNESS — Mrs.Geo.Lennon accompanied by Miss Shirley Lennon and.Mr.Jacques Racine, of Quebec were weekend guests of Mrs: John Prout.in Colborne, Ont.Mrs.Fred Cox and son, Douglas, of Lower Ireland, and Mr ; Ian Gilbert, of Montreal, were guests of Mr.and Mrs.Allan : Little.Mr.and Mrs.Harry Campbell are spending an indefinite time with Mr.and Mrs.Alger' White.Interviewed by Bob Butler Journalist To-Night 7.30 CBMT fïtis 11 AT THE GRANADA Sylvia, (Anita Ekberg) ravishing Hollywood movie star, in Rome for a picture assignment, leads Marcello, (Marcello Mastroianni) a newspaperman covering her visit, a merry chase during her childlike romp in and around the wonders of the Eternal City. They are pictured here on a balcony high atop St.Peter’s Cathedral having just climbed the thousand stairs inside the sacred dome. This scene is from the motion picture “La Dolce Vita” which opens today at the Granada.COOKSHIRE — Friends of Mr.A.H.Goff .ill be sorry to learn he is a patient in the Sherbrooke Hospital.Mr.Jim Davis, of Sorel, was a weekend guest of Mr.and Mrs.Arnold Wheeler.Mr.Kenneth Goff, of Mont-j real was a weekend guest of his parents, Mr.and Mrs.A.H j Goff.Weekend guests of Mr.and | Mrs.R.B.Learned were Mr.;and Mrs.Ian Hofford, of Sud-jbury, Ont., Mr.and Mrs.C.K.I Currier, of St.Johns.Mr.and ! books, blackboard brushes, and rulers the teacher's desk of the future may contain an overhead projector which the teacher manipulates without ever getting up from her desk or turning her back on the class.Such a machine along with language laboratories, inter-communication system and tape recorders was on demonstration at the University of Sherbrooke last week. The Overhead projector doesn’t quite replace the teacher but it certainly can make his job easier and provide stimulating material for the pupils’ assimilation, Mr.Guy Lachapelle who was demon- strating the machine, explained. He pointed out how' the tea cher can place material in the projector then pencil in additional data or add sections to a graph or other type of diagram. When the teacher has completed the lesson the slide is removed and the notes made by the teacher on the plastic covering the slide are erased.Mr.Lachapelle said that the overhead projector can be used effectively from kindergarten to college. It can teach the numbers from one to ten or to explain the gross national product of Canada. When the machine was first envisioned the company which produces them asked teachers for suggestions as to what they needed and wanted as a teaching aid.The machines have incorporated many of these suggestions, Mr.Lachapelle said which is why it has been so successful.Another reason is the reaction of students to the overhead projector. Not only does it fascinate students at first but because of the variety of material which it can present it holds the pupils’ interest. The language lab is another aid which is coming into in creasing use in modern schools, Mr.Lachapelle said. The language lab is a booth w'hieh has sides so that each pupil has a feeling of privacy and can work without distraction. The pupils listen to the mas ter recording then answer the questions or practice pro- THE STOCK LIQUIDATION SALE HARDWARE UNTIL 10:00 DAY THURS.OPEN TONIGHT CLOSED ALL INC.MORIN & FILS Published every weekday by the Sherbrooke Daily Record Company, Ltd-119 Wellington Street North.Sherbrooke.WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 1962 Wise proposals for use of estate The recommendations of the special committee formed to study the future use of the Howardene property in Sherbrooke are based on the view that the estate must be a true community centre and a showpiece for the city.In its three months of sifting through the many suggestions received from individuals and public groups, the committee was diligent in its work and judicious in its selection of proposals. The committee was composed of I t delegates of service clubs and other organizations under the auspices of the Sherbrooke Chamber of Commerce. It recommends, in its brief to city council, that Howardene's beautiful grounds and handsome buildings be maintained as they are so that the particular charm of the estate may be preserved. It also asked that the property be used for civic, cultural and educational purposes only.Among its many sound proposals, the committee noted that the city should consider building a small bota- ?t Any waiter is open to suggestion, nical garden on the property. The plan is worthwhile from many points: the municipal greenhouses are already located on the estate, hence, the cost and work involved would be far less than if the city had to start from bedrock, so to speak. The committee s rejection of a suggestion of a licensed dining room is a sensible move. The question of obtaining a liquor license could arouse the resentment of many people who feel that a public park is not a suitable place to dispense alcoholic beverages. The use of the buildings for art and music schools and as a location for the municipal library would be a guarantee that the property would be opened year round. With activities held in all seasons, community interest would not flag as it happens so often with publicly-owned centres.By emphasizing the need for putting Howardene at the disposal of the whole family, the committee has performed a valuable service to the city and its population.?always glad to get a good tip.New political drama on television By now, a good many Canadians have had an opportunity of seeing the results of a new television broadcast ruling allowing political parties to dramatize political programs during the election campaign. So far, the Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives seem to be the most active in this field of political television drama. And it must be admitted some of the shows that have been put on are rather interesting.Certainly, they are often far easier to take then long, dull talks by aspiring candidates wbo stare straight into the television camera out at their "fellow Canadians." The technique employed for the new ahows is rather similar to that used in good newsreels. There is expert narration, crowd reaction, the actual sounds heard at meetings and other events, and of course, many candid shots of the political leader involved as he stumps the country, turns sod or kisses babies. The technique allows those responsible for putting the shows together to pick and choose their material. Thus, the political leader is always shown speaking to dense, wildly cheering crowds. He is always greeted with glad handshakes and smiles. He is either smiling himself, or looking very sincere and determined as he pounds, home a particularly vital point to his listeners. And of course, only the best speeches and the most enthusiastic receptions are shown.Whether this kind of campaigning is really "cricket” is something that the Board of Broadcast governors will no doubt have to decide before the next general election rolls around.By then, they may well find that there are dangers in political drama.Once political parties find that this kind of a program meets with a more popular reception than the factual approach, they will jump into the production of political drama with both feet, perhaps eventually to the point where they virtually forsake any other kind of television campaigning. The question then will be how much fiction should be allowed to influence the huge audiences television commands at a time when the country vitally needs sound information on the qualities and policies of those who aspire to government.•ù à a What made people ring doorbells before there were bathtubs to sit Other mental cases in Quebec jails? The five mentally-deficient men w-ho had been confined in Sherbrooke s Winter Street jail for the past five years have finally been moved to a proper institution in Joliette. There, according to local jail authorities, the men will receive special care and proper psychiatric treatment — as befits their condition. The unfortunate part of the whole affair is that it has taken so long for these men to be properly cared for.Housed in ordinary jail cells, mixing with ordinary prisoners for half a decade, their conditions, however bad they were in the beginning, must surely have deteriorated to an extremely low level. How much good psychiatric care will do now — particularly in view of the rather unsavory character of mental care generally in this province at the present time — is problematical, but at least the men will receive a minimum of the type of care they should have been receiving all along.Still unanswered, however, is the larger question.Government authorities have said the men were lodged in the Sherbrooke jail in the first place because there was no room in mental institutions for them. But were these five the only victims of overcrowded conditions? Are there perhaps not other unfortunates lodged in small jails around the province who should be receiving psychiatric care?1 he Department of Health, says it does not know of any other cases. But the situation could still bear close scrutiny.?tV ? ?The thermometer is in a class by itself in some places, being about the only thing that has dropped.Other papers say: Milovan Djilas is sentenced again What is one to make of the Yugoslav regime after the sentence passed on Milovan Djilas on Monday? In 1957 a sentence of three years which he was already serving was Increased to nine years on publication abroad of his book “The New Class.” Harsh though this retaliation was, it seemed that he had compiled as many affronts to the dignity of the bureaucracy as he could justify and expressed them in language that was meant to hurt.In Western terms his criticisms would not have merited imprisonment; but in any ideological society, even in the Yugoslavia whjch had led the Communist block towards greater freedom of expression, he would have been lucky to escape. Then, after purging, as it were, his contempt of officialdom he was released when about half his sentence had been served — to be rearrested later on what must appear flimsy charges. The brief dispatch of his case by the Belgrade court on Monday does not suggest that any serious threat to state security needed to be discussed. One suggestion is that by publishing reminiscences of Stalin he has impeded the improvement of relations with Russia. But the explanation may be simpler.Every criticism in » Communist state is a little experiment. If it succeeds the author may experiment again and so—-as some Soviet writers have lately been doing — change the intellectual environment in his favour and enable further experiments to have a greater chance of success.Mr.Djilas's earlier experiment failed.Did he realise that he was in no position to make
