prices in a competki.e positk i The myth that Canada is pricing itself out of world markets doesn’t stand up under a new analysis of North America and European conditions produced by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.Evidence from the 20 member countries shows that Canada’s price and wage record compares favorably with the others.NOT AS FAST The conclusion is that Can-; adian prices aren’t rising as fast as those of most of our ! trading partners and competitors.Wages, regarded as one of | the chief causes of price in-I creases, have been held as close to productivity as in the I U.S.and closer than In major European industrialized nations. In the 1953-61 period, a time that includes boom and , recession stages, Canada’s consumer prices rose by an annual average percentage of 1.3, a fraction lower than the U.S.record.In the same period, Britain's prices rose 2 9 per cent., France’s 4.1, Sweden's 3.1 and Germany’s 18.LOWEST Between 1961 and 1962 the Canadian rate of increase was only 0.8 per cent, lowest for the 20 OECD countries.Britain's in the same year was more than five times as great, and so was Germany’s.U.S.prices rose faster than Canada's, at a rate of 1.1 per cent. What does thos mean?It By EDWIN MAHONEY Toronto Telegram News Service confirms that the price Canadians have to get for their products, in home and world markets, is indeed rising constantly. But because prices in other C S- ¦C- eC. ÿî ' ^ Z f ^ r ^ ‘s’ & ?INDEX Births, deaths Books Classified Comics products are becoming, or should be, more competitive in world markets.RENTS CLIMB The figures have to he taken with some reservations, because part of the most startling European increases is attributable to sharp increases in rents over the period (10.6 per cent, in France last year, for example.) However, prices are up generally for food, other goods and services to a far greater degree than in Canada.Between the 1953-54 period and 1960-61, wages and salaries in relation to productivity in Canada went up 24 per cent annually, exactly the same as in the United States. In France they went up 6.1 per cent annually, in Germany 3.1, in the United Kingdom lour per cent in Sweden 3.5.This means that the Canadian record in keeping wage increases in line with growing productivity is better than that of the other countries in the AECD, an organization which is growing into a sort of economic NATO.HIGHER BASE What the new OECD statistics don’t show is the fact that Canada and the U.S.keep growing from a higher base than their European partners, in spite of this, the gap in prices is closing and the relative position improving. / SHERBROOKE DAILY RECORD, SAT., DEC.22, 1962 GUIDE TO TELEVISION VIEWING 3—WCAX—Burlington 5—WPTZ—Plamburs 6—CBMT- TBA—To Bo Announced 12—CFCF — Montreal •Montreal 7—CHL1 —Sherbrooke 8—WMTW — Mount Waihington SATURDAY 12:00 o nv Si SKv Ktnf 5) Lazy L Ranch 0) Movie Matinee 7) 12 o’clock Jubilee H» ttuua uunnv 12) A Toy Zoo 12:15 p.m.7) Premiere Edition 12:25 p.m.7i Commentaine’ 17:30 p m 3) Reading Room 5) Exploring 7) Premiere Edition ») Saturday Showtime 12) Lets Find out 12:45 p.m./> Midi Sport i CL p m i) Broken Arrow 7i Entree Des Artistes 12) Fignewton Frog & Dora 1:30 p.m .} Forecast 5) AFL Football ft) Amateur Sports Magazine 7) Colt 45 3) Film Shorts 12) Saturday Surprise Party 2:00 p m 5> The Big Picture 6) World of Sport 7) Images en Tele 12) Saturday At a Movie 2:15 p.m.3) Main Event 2:45 p.m.3) Bluebonet Bow 3:00 p.m.World of Sport 3:30 p.m.12) Big Time Wrestling 4:00 p.m 6) Long John Silver 5) Wide World of Sports 7) 20 ans Express 4:30 p.m 5) The Race of The Week 8:30 a.m.8) Colby Tele-Course 6) Country Calendar 8:45 a.m.7) Cours Televises 9:00 a.m.8) Off To Adventure 9:15 a.m.8) The Catholic Mass 9:25 a.m.6) Today on CBMT ?:30 a.m.3) Christophers 6) University Credit 7) Cours Televises 9 45 a.m Carol , 8) Red Rtvar Jamboree 6) A Christmas 7) Soif de Dieu 12) Like Young 5:00 p m >) W ide W'orld of Sport 6) Kingfisher Cove 7) Concert 8) Beany & Cecil a:30 p.m 3) Big Time Wrestling fti Bugs Bunny 12) The Three Stooges I 6)NHL Hockey 5:45 p.m. ! Published every weekday by the Sherbrooke Daily Record Company Ltd., 119 Wellington Street North.Sherbrooke.SATURDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1962 Tightening up on jobless payments The sweeping proposals advanced by the Gill Royal Commission studying the problems of the unemployment insurance system in Canada are all based on a single idea — that the unemployment insurance fund be restored to its original purpose, that of providing assistance to persons who become temporarily out of work. There has been a tendency in recent years for government to look upon the fund as something of a relief organization by extending the period for which payments are made and adding such incidentals as seasonal benefits and supplementary allowances. All these frills have added.heavily to the demands on the fund without providing it with any substantial additional revenue.Under the proposals advanced in the Commission report, the insurance and welfare systems now administered by the Unemployment Insurance Commission would be divorced.Aid for the chronically jobless would become the direct responsibility of the federal government under its general welfare policies, while the fund benefits would be limited to those out of work for periods of six months or less.By tightening up on the basic principles of the unemployment insurance scheme, the Commission is hopeful that many of the abuses which have proved so costly in the past may be eliminated. Not only have these abuses cost the fund tens of millions of dollars annually but they have caused a distorted picture of the actual unemployment situation in the nation. This has resulted from the practise of making payments to thousands of persons not genuinely seeking work— married woman who work brief periods to gain a little extra money through their employment and the following insurance payments, seasonal workers whose high level of earnings during the lush period should carry them over the lean weeks, etc.Doubtless the proposed amendments will draw protests from many qtiarters, especially from those who have been receiving benefits to which they are not actually entitled, but they do seem the logical way out of the trouble in which the insurance fund now finds itself.?Lots of women take up law, but not as many as lay it down.Pets for gifts need special care Many have already purchased or plan to purchase a puppy or a kitten or some other pet for a child this Christmas. It is one of the most wonderful gifts a child can have. But, warns the Canadian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals, it is important to remember that an animal is not a toy, but should be treated like a friend. The CSPA offers this timely and valuable advice to those thinking of an animal as a Christmas gift: • Don’t give an animal to a child who is too young.Over ten is a good general rule.• Be sure the animal will be wel- comed by parents as well as child. They must be prepared to teach the child to look after it properly.• Don’t push a puppy or kitten into a Christmas stocking, or wrap it in a box under the tree.• Best time for the animal to arrive in the house is after the holiday excitement is over.A good idea is to give the child an animal card on Christmas day to say that a new friend is coming to stay after Christmas.• Remember that animal care can be an important part of a child’s education.Learning proper love of animals is excellent character training. It's foolish to get mentally tired through thinking about how physically tired you are.Haydn S.Pearsons COUNTRY FLAVOR Posting the books Nature is looking up for the year and posting the books on another cycle.Daylight hours are few. When the sun has followed its low arc across would rise.In the event technical advances in the design of coal and oil fired power stations have brought costs sharply dowm. The capital costs of these stations have fallen in the past ten years from about £60 to about £40 per kilowatt sent out. This, together with plentiful supplies of small coal of the kiod used for generating electricity, has undermined the whole pattern of the forecasts on which the nuclear programme was based. In spite of this disappointment, the Government seems prepared to accept the revised forecast that the cost of nuclear power can be brought on to a par with that of conventional electricity by 1970, and thereafter may become cheaper.Hopes are now ne-ing pinned on the economies thought to be possible from the use of the advanced gas-cooled reactor, a prototype of which is now being tested at Windscile. The continuation of the present programme is held to be justified by riw experience that scientists and I power stations which are to be commissioned between now and 1966 will cost altogether £500 millions. To provide the same amount of electricity from conventional generating plant, the Minister of Power said on Monday wuold cost £360 million less. The comparison is slightly unfair: probably about £70 millions of the £500 millions to be spent represents the cost of the initial charges of nuclear fuel, and running costs subsequently are less than those of conventional power stations.Even so we shall be paying many times more for extra power in this decade than we need have. What went wrong?Though the design and construction of nuclear plants have given rise to some unforeseen difficulties, this is not the main answer. That lies in the belief—now seen to have been mistaken—that other kinds of fuel, particularly coal, would be too scarce to meet the country’s growing need for energy; and the even more mistaken assumption that the cost of electricity sent out by South for the Winter 'Wkl'k: r‘? 14 -, - Adventures with God Hope sees gives men Hope is the sustaining element that puts elastic in one’s step and peace in the soul.Life can be endured as long as hope stimulates the mind and glands and spirits of weak mortals. What Is hope?Hope is the undergirding belief (or feeling) that what we most desire or wish for will be achieved sometime, somewhere.Hope sees beyond the present liminations failures and trials to a future day when freedom and release from pain and penury will be the pattern of life rather than the dream of life. This underlying belief conditions men and women to carry on courageously in the face of overwhelming and devastating experiences.Like the writer of Hebrews "we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” Heb.6: 11-19.The writer concludes his dissertation with the reassuring words: “Which hope we have as an anchor for the soul, both sure and steadfast.” If ever men needed “an anchor for the soul” they need it in this nuclear age.And HOPE is the only anchor that can hold us fast in the mental, moral and physical storms of life. But it is not good enough just to hope FOR the best.We must hope IN the best.TIDINGS OF JOY Hope thou in God for only the Almighty, compassionate and holy God can make man’s highest and noblest dreams come true.He alone can put down the forces of evil which have brought defeat and suffering.Christmas comes again with the glad tidings of great joy that the Saviour has come and has set in motion the program which will eventually fulfil our fondest hopes and wishes. The hope set before Israel by Moses and the prophets has been realized after centuries of waiting and many Gentiles have “come to thy light” as predicted in Isa.60: 1-3.Today millions of people of every known race are rejoicing in the hope that sustained Israel.“Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities,” Ps.130:7-8.The invitation to hope in the Lord has been extended to ALL people everywhere.“Fear not,” said the angel, “for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to ALL people. For unto you is born this day in that keeps the soul steady and “patient in tribulation and rejoicing in hope.” The announce ment of Christ’s birth interested only a relatively small group.Only a few persons like Anna and Simeon, Joseph and Mary, Zachariah and Elizabeth and their close relatives anticipated the great moment when a child born in the manger would launch the divine program for the redemption of a lost world. These knew that “the fulness of time” had come and that the holy infant was the greatest human being ever to be born of woman. The words: “For unto YOU is born this day a Saviour which is Christ the Lord,” had real significance. And Mary sang: "My spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour!” Imagine the thrill of holding your firstborn son in your arms and realizing that their economic and cultural ties with New England are too strong.Similarly, an identity of cultures and interests between the prairies and the US prairie states might prove stronger than ties with Ontario.Victoria no doubt would become a Crown Colony. As for the rest, my crystal ball is cloudy. But Canada cannot survive without Quebec, and Quebec cannot in the long run survive without Canada.?That being tho case, it behooves all of us to try to get along better, to compromise, to emphasize the things that unite rather than divide us.Language and national symbols are the main divisors.French Canadians believe they are discriminated against in the public service and in industry because they speak French, whereas they maintain that the confederation pact intended that the English and French languages should be con-equal in all Canada. With no ties of affection to Britain, they believe Canada should have a flag that does not contain the Union Jack. The CNR’s Donald Gordon, the Montreal newspaper “Le Devoir”, the Quebec Social Créditer Gilles Grégoire, and Liberal leader Pearson have all called for appointment of a royal commission on bilingualism.Presumably it would investigate tho allegations of discrimination; study the position of the French language constitutionally, in theory and in practice, and make recommendations aimed at correcting injustices.?Prime Minister Diefenbaker responded with a flat "No” last year when asked if the government were considering such an inquiry. His reply might be different today. However, he has promised to convene a federal-provincial conference on national symbols early in the New Year.A flag and anthem, if both partners in Confederation can agree on them, would be of the greatest significance in strengthening the 1867 partnership. But in the present state of Canadien-Canadian relations, with Canadien mobs hanging Gordon’s effigy and shredding the Red Ensign, this conference could be as much a fiasco as Mackenzie King’s committee to pick a flag.the consolation and was ready to depart in peace after I heard the significant good news. ^ This is God the Father’s personal message to all men: “Unto YOU is born this day in the city of David, a Sav- viour!” Have you welcomed Him?Have you rejoiced like Mary, saying: My spirit hath rejoiced in God MY Saviour?Or, have you read God’s announcement with a shrug of indifference? You cannot af-stance.h lld âS aeU »Tmh° She 1,La0JtC do IF this bov finds out?— J.sa:d' 71 neVer tf1' Thl" Dear J: Vou are probablv not aroused their curiosity and.^ ol(, eno ^ da,e ter questioning J.they figured^ many other6girls.se{tle {or - the fun of talking about boys.)’a'eri 1 J'ou often played ihe 5 carts of Loudmouth and K » ?MERRY CHRISTMAS n Dodge, Chrysler, Valiant.Simca 5 and 1000 Volvo, Dodge Trucks 43 Wellington South Used tar lot — M65 King West SHERBROOKE — LO.2 3805 CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING RATES CASH RATE — 3 cents per word, minimum charge 50 cents for 16 words or less.Three consecutive insertions, 3rd day half charge.Si* consecutive insertions, 25% off.10 cents for mailing Record Bo* replies.DEADLINE — Classified Ads accepted until 4:00 PAA day previous to insertion.Auction Sales, Legal Notices Classified Display and Display accepted until 12 noon previous day; in life some women look forward to instead of dreading? What prompts the question is a recent study made in Britain that reveals that while 94 per cent of the girls who wrote essays on how they saw themselves in the future saw a husband and children in the picture, 37 per cent of the girls also foresaw the deaths of their husbands.“The interesting thing,” said the psychologist who conducted the survey, “was that they not infrequently killed off their husbands at quite an early age.One is tempted to think that for these girls the wedding is what matters. The husband is allowed to fulfill his main biological and economic function before his premature demise, but apparently is not wanted as a partner in aid age,” How often in this country we hear married women talking as though they not onlv expected to outlive their husbands hut as though they already had their plans made for their years of widowhood.“If I outlive John” a wife begins calmly, and then goes on to say how she plans :o live her life as a widow. If men also think about the possibility of outliving their wives, at least they rarely mention it, so apparently they 530 Montreal perhaps some wives don’t “want partners in old age.” That is the way so many wives of retired men complain about having the men around home “and under foot” all the time.If so many girls who look forward to marriage also calmly accept the idea of widowhood as inevitable, how many wives think along the same lines? There must be quite a few, or where would young girls get the attended by many collectors from the area. This was the first meeting that the writer has been able to attend and it was indeed a pleasure to meet the many friends there. The meeting was highlighed by short talks from five members about thei; collecting preferences and philatelic experiences Mrs.L.Caron, the hard working secretary, spoke about the pleasures of topical collecting and her discovery of a block of Vatican Stamps with a printing error.Prof.J.Gray, of Bishop's University, spoke about the Ethiopian Airmails he had acquired and the Chinese stamps issued for an expedition.Mr.Testulat, of Sherbrooke, gave a brief resume of the task of obtaining early Canadian pence issues.R.B.Miess.of Lennoxville.explained the collecting of the Australian red or carmine George V penny issue, a fascinating field but one where patience is most certainly needed.Father H.Lafrance, the president for 1961, showed illustrations of the error in the stamp from Panama as wel as the correctly printed copies. The president of Club is to be congratulated for his excellent job and the interest he has managed to maintain in the activities of the Club. The set of sports stamps from Cuba is quite a production. There are a total of thirty different designs, printed in five sections of six stamps. The set lacks color but is attractive and well designed. The sale of Cuban stamps is prohibited in the United States so many collectors in Canada will not find them readily available. However, they can be obtained from Europe and from certain dealers in this country. While not too expensive they are high enough in value to curtail sales to many collectors and it may very well be that they will be good property one of these fine days, if and when Cuba, once again is back in the free world.?POT POURRI: The publication of information about the stamp issues featuring the Christmas motif in one of Canada’s larger weeklies has caused many collectors to become interested in them, and by the tvay, some are difficult to find.White Ace publishes album pages for these issues.Collectors are reminded that first day covers are better collected without a name and address on them. The resale value is low when they are addressed. The new issue of Great Britain to commemorate National Productivity Year should become quite common if the stamps are used for a year and instructions to postal personnel would indicate that sales are to be pushed so to speak. In passing — I wonder how one will obtain a First Day Cover of the new Canadian 1-cent stamp with a single value? The lowest postal rate is 2-cents.Should a collectors ask for service on the 1-cent value and pay postage due? This time of year brings attention to the many shut-ins and hospitalized persons who collect stamps. Why not share your good fortune with them and send your surplus, stamps, albums and accessories to one of the sanatoriums or the Children's Memorial Hospital, or to some unfortunate who must be confined to his bed.The merriest of Christmas’ to all of you.Goes to shoot a lion to refurbish his soul £dtmdau'i book ilteff Edited by GLADYS TAYLOR THE MAN WITH NO SHADOW, by Desmond Weiring, 102 P9*-> Hodder & Stoughton, London, $3.95.THE MAN WITH NO SHADOW tells the story of Peter Ghent whose marriage to Ann disintegrates for many reasons, among which is their inability to be either socially or sexually faithful.Ann.even before the divorce which legally separates her and Peter, becomes intensely interested in business and has no need for Peter or any other man except as occasional lovers; but Peter, in spite of affairs with other women, is conscious of ir-remedial sense of loss every time he sees Ann.even after their legal separation.Whether this sense of loss undermines his confidence in himself as a man, or whether he is emotionally disturbed by guilt carried over from a childhood escapade, or whether he feels an overwhelming general inadequacy, Ghent does not know, but he begins to feel like a man without substance: a man with no shadow.Deeply concerned, Peter consults a psychiatrist who suggests he “go shoot a lion.” So Peter Ghent goes to Kenya to shoot a lion, to refurbish his soul away from the familiar city, to try to recover, in the wild jungle, what he has lost of himself. What he finds and does not find forms a major part of the novel.Desmond Meiring, author of THE MAN WITH NO SHADOW, was born in Ken- ya in 1924.Africa seems to lend jts authors’ pens the power and color and depth of its vast forests: in THE MAN WITH NO SHADOW, Mr.Meiring's love and "faith renewed at a manger.” could be recommended than the story of Helen Keller.Lavishily illustrated, written with sympathy but not sloppy sentimentality, this is one of the most fascinating books that has come the way of this reviewer for a long while. Most people are familiar with the story of Helen Keller and her refusal to let her life be limited by the double cross of blindness and deafness. But from this book we learn that not only was her life not limited, it was fuller by far than the lives of most of those blessed with all their faculties. For this reason alone the book is a challenge to every reader who is not living his life to the fullest. While reading this book the somewhat whimsical thought came to me that no one could give himself a better Christmas present than, first the reading of this book, and second, the pledging to himsélf that for one year at least he would live his life to the fullest of his abilities just as Helen Keller did.I suspect it would be impossible to estimate the full rewards of such an experiment.Miss Keller in addition to her indomitable spirit bequeaths us in this book a message which could be of help at any time but never more so then at the facing of a new year. That message is help at any time but never ‘Faith is the strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.” G.T.¦ loi IIP lih 71 Helen Keller For those who missed the TV show A TOUR OF THE WHITE HOUSE WITH MRS.JOHN F.KENNEDY, by Perry Wolff.258 pp., DOUBLE-DAY, $8.95.This book should serve a dual purpose; a pleasant and lasting reminder for those who saw Mrs.Kennedy’s tour of the White House on T.V.or as a means of finding out just what they missed by those who did not see the telecast. As might be expected this book is very handsomely produced and despite its fairly high price, it will undoubtedly find its way into a great many homes. It would certainly make an excellent Christmas gift for an American relative or friend.Though the book follows closely the format of the T.V.show it contains a great deal of additional and even more interesting pieces of information than those heard on the show’.For instance it included pictures and anecdotes of each of the First Ladles, a list with dates of all the presidents of the U.S.A.(a must for quiz show contestants) and one delightful child’s letter, a sample of the many Mrs.Kennedy received after her show.Recommended.G.T, To be read with reservations ENGLISH DIALECTS An 11-year study of English dialects found great variations in the language including 20 the American Sisters of Charity by Joseph I, Dirvin, C.M.Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, N Y.498 pp., $8.50.Mr, Dirvin set himself a momentous task when he undertook this biography in chronological order because ¦there is such a huge volume of materials from journals, letters and papers belonging to Mrs.Selon.He ha gone back to Leghorn, Florence and other places in Italy that had much to do with the first, thoughts of the need of the Roman Catholic Church by Mrs.Selon.This biography is detailed and lengthy, even so I would like to have read more about her friends, especially Julia Scott who must have been a wonderful person because she helped Elizabeth Selon so much. The writer gives a very long description of the conversion and death of Mrs.Selon, which prevented him from relating some other interesting sidelights of her remarkable life. However, she was a very intensely religious woman.Such expressions as Blessed Mary, Blessed Sacrament, Sacred Truth, etc.flowed from her lips with ease. This cannot be called an objective appraisal.Often, Mr.Dirvin in interpreting events in the life of Mrs.Selon lets his bias show through his assumptions. For example he refers to those who differed from her on religious issues as “the enemy.” The story of MRS.SETON as it relates the contributions of this outstanding woman, who founded the first community of Catholic Women, established the first Day School and also the first Catholic orphanage, is very well documented. But this reviewer has the feeling that the writer is reading into some of his source material some ideas which were never intended to be there in the first place.Mrs, Selon’s cause for beatification and canonization, even though she has been dead for 140 years, is now in progress in Rome.In a special audience with Pope John XXIII, the writer had this biography blessed.1 would say that this is the kind of hook that should Be read with mental reservations.JEAN LOVELACE Lennoxville Vivid STOMACHS THE SILENCE ON THE SHORE By Hugh Garner, McClelland and Stewart.311 pages.$5.00 Hugh Garner’s SILENCE ON THE SHORE may prove strong meat for those who have genteel atomachs, for it is written in the tradition of sparing no details. The story is laid in Toronto and centres mainly about “apartment” tenants in a rooming house in “a tree-bordered segment of the past .devoid of nostalgia for those who lived in it on their way up and with- out sentiment for those who tried to remain in it on their way down.” Though not, one hopes, typical of Toronto, SILENCE ON THE SHORE is truly typical of a rooming-house that gathers into its net the flotsam and jetsom of a metropolitan city — English and French Canadians, Germans, Poles; people trying to make a splash with small jobs and others jobless and starving with pathetic dignity; drunkards; sex maniacs. If much in the story is sordid and revolting, there is also very evident the profound truth that man has two natures struggling for supremacy and that, in round numbers, the better is more likely to survive.People who are not transients but LIVE in a rooming-house almost invariably become entangled in the skeins of others’ lives, and more particularly when the landlady is German born Grace (Gret-chen) HU1.Grace, well past her youth with an unsatisfactory marriage behind her but desire still strong, loves and hates her tenants, meddles in their affairs, tries seduction on occasion but mainly satisfies her feminine and maternal instincts by forcing mother hood on her cat Peanuts and by an undue Interest in the romances of her tenants. The reader will find himself rather unwillingly feeling pity, sympathy and finally a kind of liking-for trie strange, lonely woman.Almost against his will Walter Fowler, editor of a small trade paper and newly released from a marriage that makes him doubt his capabilities as a man, finds himself embroiled in the affairs of his fellow-tenants when he becomes a roomer on Ad ford Road, Dreadful and compnision-ate, SILENCE ON THE SHORE discloses the heart of Aline, the young Salvation Army girl pursued by Andrew Sloman, a terrifying combination of sex mania and religious fanaticism while she herself is torn between her religious convictions and her love for Clark Cronin, a not- too admirable character; it reveals the desperation of the aging Polish Sophia who wants love more than anything else in her limited world; it tells of Duncan, the drunkard, and of Martin, the old pensioner, in the basement with his almost hopeless dream of viiiting hi* daughter in the west. The reader may not enjoy Hugh Garner’s THE SILENCE ON THE SHORE, but he will be held by it from beginning to end.BULEBELL PHILLIPS Interesting
