longer and slimmer when a marquise .shape gem is worn. Other good choices are the narrow emerald cut,'or the oval cabochon.Very long fingers look best when the ring mounding is wide.Round solitaires are also very good for this type of hand, and ! when extra width is desired, complimentary guard rings j may be worn.In general, large round i beads in the choker style i look best on tali, slendernecked women. Those with shorter necks should choose necklaces that give a feeling of length.Double-strand opera length pearls, beads or gold chains are their best choice.Wide cuff bracelets break up the length of the long, slim arm, while the petite woman usually looks better wearing narrower bracelets.Pearls and diamonds flatter women of every coloring, although very creamy or yellowish pearls should be avoided by women with tanned or olive complexions.Emeralds are striking on auburn haired, or blond women, while rubies enliven the dark or grey-haired beauty.Aquamarines and sapphires are particularly lovely on women of light hair and skin coloring, and of course, those with vivid blue eyes.TH0S.W.LEONARD B.A., LL.L.NOTARY Continuntol Bldg Suilu 509 ’ LO 9-7600 United Nations force in Cyprus Whatever may have been thought about Prime Minister Pearson's political acumen, there has never been any doubt as to his stature as an international statesman. It came to the fore again Friday night as Mr.Pearson steered through /Parliament quick approval of sending 1,100 Canadian troops on a peace-keeping operation to war-torn Cyprus.Within hours, the advance guard of the ( ana-dian force was on the island. There will be general satisfaction among all Canadians at Mr.Pearson's decisive action. This country has long stood for the maintenance of the United Nations as a force for preventing bloodshed in the world. In fulfilling this aim, nothing is mofe important to the United Nations than the kind of operation that is beginning in Cyprus.Up until Friday night, there was some doubt as to whether this aim would be ?In the time a teen-ager fusses about doing fulfilled properly in Cyprus. There were many countries ready to give “approval in principle” to the idea of a UN force on the island, but few ready to back up their words with deeds, and none so quickly as Canada.First indications were that the presence of UN troops in Cyprus had caused at least a lull in hostilities. The hope is that the force will be able to keep the peace long enough for an atmosphere and an attitude to develop which could lead to a successful settlement. There is really no reason why this cannot be accomplished. In Cyprus, the trouble stems from internal differences which, up to now, have been relatively free of ominous outside influences.Perhaps what both warring sides often wrestle with is how to get assistance from neighboring communities when there is a serious fire. The usual red tape involved goes something like this: The mayor of one town has to talk to the mayor of the other town.Or one of two designated alderman has to talk to his counterpart in another town.Quite often, this procedure resulted in some rather ludicrous situations. There have been occasions, for example, when a serious fire in a town required calling for out-of-town assistance. But neither the mayor or the two designated aider- available. In the town from which assistance could be sent, all designated officials were available. But, alas, they could not be officially asked for help. What often happens, of course is that red tape is discreetly cut.But not always.Sometimes, assistance is not sent. All of this is going to be changed. The Legislative Assembly gave final reading Friday to a bill that would enable an employee of the town, such as the secretary-treasurer or the police chief, both of whom aie usually available, to perform the necessary functions. While this is a long way from having adequate fire-fighting facilities in all communities, it does represent a much-needed improvement on the existing situation.Dear Editor: I have intended writing you before and expressing my interest in your paper. Its layout in regards to news both International and local; miracle of life and in ils presence a man should be humble.Contrary to what most persons believe, a bud does not “grow" in the late winter or early spring.Last summer those buds developed; in that small package future blossoms and leaves were folded and packed, and a waterproofed cover was developed. All the parts for a future blossom or leaf were manufactured in miniscule form.Through the fall and winter buds wait until time is fulfilled. Each tree and shrubs has its distinctively shaped bud even as each tree lias its bark and branch pattern.Elm are slender and pointed, light brown streaked with gray; red maple buds are in clusters with a glowing red-brown color; shag-bark hickory buds have graceful, curled gray scales with long points; white oak has blunt, thick buds in clusters at twig points.A bud is a small thing, but he who is sensitive to Nature's wonder looks at it with reverence. Now bark limbs are silhouetted against the sky; hut soon the scales will break and in due time, blossoms and leaves will clothe the branches.Time is the essence of life, and the passing of the seasons is part of the profound rhythm that governs a man's years. There are those who say that life is materalistic, but he who has understanding as well as knowledge, knows there is more in man's experience than material facts.Dear Sir: “Cheap Publicity fur Punks.” Is the As to Miss Scott, there is no doubt in my mind as to her integrity, or to her desire as a born again child of God, through the medium of the newspaper to help men and women to find the peace of God through the Lord Jesus Christ.Although we may not agree with all that she says yet we feel that the consensus of opinion is that her articles should continue to appear in your paper and also the many across the fair Dominion of Canada. We have to thank God, for those whom He has given the ability to write articles, from a i-eligious standpoint that appeal to the general public, such as Miss Scott. As to the experience of which she made mention, I wish to draw your attention. To some this may seem like an isolated ease.But.such is not the case. For this is happening all over the world, and I speak primarily of those instances which have happened outside the circle of Pentecostal Churches, and both amongst clergy and laity.Every major, historic denomination have some in their ranks who have had this "Glossolaliac” e x p e r ience.Notable amongst these are some students from Yale University as reported in Time magazine. As to “sticking to the Bible” and not listening “to what men have to say,” the plain truth of the matter is that this is an experience which is spoken of in the Bible. If my experience corresponds with that in the Bible 1 have every right in the world to talk about it and to listen to others who have had a similar experience. If this is not the case then every church should put a lock on its doors and a aign up saying “OUT OF BUSINESS" for the preaching of the Gospel is simply telling forth the good news that Christ died for sinful men and what He has done in my life He can and will do in yours.Kindly tell me, what is wrong with Miss Scott listening to an Episcopalian clergyman recount his experience of being filled with the Holy Ghost. As Miss Scott says "None who heard the spiritu-ally released Episcopalia could doubt the reality of his experience.” What does the Bible have to say concerning this experience?Does this man’s experience “ignore the Holy Scriptures"?I think not, In fact they support rather than speak against this experience. There are three instances in the Books of Acts where it is very plainly stated that the Believer was filled with the Holy Ghost and that tongues accompanied such a filling.Acts 2 where the Disciples were filled with the Holy Ghost.Verse 4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts chapter 10 gives us the experience of Cornelius Verses 44, 46 “While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word .For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God ’.The other reference is found in Acts 19 where it is recorded that the Ephesians were filled wtih the Holy Ghost.Verse 6 says “And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them: and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.” This should be sufficient to convince the unbiased, unprejudiced individual of that which accompanied each of these cases. It was the “glos-solalia” or tongues.I don’t believe any sincere individus’ would be foolish enough label it “jabber” or “gibberish.” The oft repeated phrase, which we hear, "Tongues have ceased, They ended with the Bygone day$ TWENTY YEARS AGO (From the Record of Thursday, March 16, 1944) The annual meeting of the Granby Women’s institute was held at the home of Mrs.Warman Coupland, when the hostess assisted by Mrs.Nelson Rutherford and several members served a hot dinner.Following the business session, officers elected for the coming year were: President, Mrs.M.Robinson; vice-president, Mrs.E.J.Coupland; secretary, XI rs.MacDonald; treasurer Mrs.H.Ryder.The conveners were all re-appointed.FIFTEEN TEARS AGO (From the Record of Wednesday, March 16, 1949) The annual branch meeting of the Warden W.I.was held at the home of Mrs.Orval Lewis, at Waterloo, with the president, Mrs.W.Wallace in the chair.Following routine business, Mrs.F.Bowker presented the slate of officers for 1843-50, who are: President, Mrs.Henry Jones; In the second and third centuries, Dr.Philip Schaff in his HISTORY OF THE APOSTOLIC CHURCH (Book 1, Sec.55) says “The speaking with tongues, however, was not con fined to the day of Pentecost.Together with the other extraordinary spiritual gifts which distinguished this age above the succeeding periods of more quiet and natural development, this gift also though to be sure in a modified form, perpetuated itself in the apostolic Church. We find traces of it still in the second and third centuries.” One more from the many I have before me.Dr.Middle-ton once wrote: "After the apostolic time, there is not, in all history, one instance either well attested, or even so much as mentioned, of any ./articular person who had ¦ver exercised that gift (ton-,jes), or pretended to exercise it in any age or country.” Many a good, well-meaning Doctor has been brought rudely awake, from that day TODAY IN HISTORY By THE CANADIAN PRESS March 16, 1964 .Hitler announced 29 years ago today — in 1935 — that Germany was returning to compulsory military conscription with the aim of creating a peacetime army of 35 divisions. This constituted an open repudiation of the Versailles treaty, but all the other powers did was protest.1938— F ormer vice -
