Shoot On Sight Cuban Revolt Crushed HAVANA — (AP) — Police shot on sight today as they pressed a roundup of rebels whose call for an armed uprising and general strike against President Gulgencio Batista failed Wednesday.About 35 persons were kil- ; led in the abortive uprising! — which was confined to Havana and Matanzas, 63 miles to the east — and in the, police hunt which followed. The continuing police search is expected to push the death toll higher.Havana was quiet early to day, although the heart of the city was without lights or gas be- Mr.and Mrs.Paul Vallee again to overthrow Batista, “probably very soon.” Instead of i the 50.000 armed revolutionists the rebel chieftain had said would rise, probably less than 200 answered the ca’l.REBELS DISAPPOINTED The rebels insisted the 2'4-hour outbreak at mid - day had been launched as a rehearsal for the long-promised all-out attack. But they expressed shock and bitterness that the public failed to heed their strike call, broadcast from briefly captured radio and television stations. In the government cleanup heavily armed national police shot to kill any motorist sus- j pected of carrying weapons. Two men were hauled from an automobile carrying 110 gasoline bombs and slain.Another was shot down when he hurled a gasoline bomb at a police car.By the time Havana quieted down around midnight, at least Continued On Page 5 I SAD REMINDER — The small cap is a pathetic reminder of the death of two three-year-old Montreal playmates, Ricky Asbinall and Teddy Glawdecki, who were found dead in the refrigerator, above, last night some 10 hours after they were last seen playing in their front yards. The refrigerator is located in the basement of a neighbour’s home in suburban Lachine. The children apparently suffocated.Their mothers’ frantic call to the police soon had a small army of searchers out looking for the two youngsters. The boys were rushed to the hospital but were pronounced dead. (CP Wirephoto) Khrushchev Plans To Co-ordinate Satellite Economies In Bloc Winnie Cancels N.American Trip LONDON (Reuters) — Sir Winston Churchill announced Wednesday night he has cancelled his planned North American visit because it is “considered inadvisable” that he make the journey. The trip would have taken him to Toronto and Washington.A statement issued by the former prime minister from Chart-well.his home in Westertiam, Kent, said: “Sir Winston Churchill has informed President Eisenhower that*with much regret he has felt obliged to concel his visit.MOSCOW (Reuters) —Premier Nikita Khrushchev and the delegation he led on an eight - day visit to Hungary arrived back in Moscow by jetliner this afternoon. The new Soviet premier, first oW of the plane, was followed by First Deputy Premier F.R.Kos-lov, trade union leader V.V.Grishin and Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko.BUDAPEST (AP) — Russia's Nikita Khrushchev left for home today with a pledge that “proletarian dictatorship will remain in Hungary.” He also gave notice of plans to co-ordinate the Communist economy of Eastern Europe more closely through a top-level conference of Soviet-bloc leaders. The visiting Soviet premier disclosed his plans Wednesday in a speech at the big Cespel steel works, a centre of the 1956 revolt.Workers were noticeably uninterested and left for lunch by the thousands as he spoke.Authorities apparently did nothing to stop them.Red Sputnik Triumph May - Be Even Greater CAMBRIDGE, Mass.(AP)— Russia’s giant Sputnik II is about U< make a flaming exit from outer space. And there’s belief that the Russians scored an even greater scientific feat with their dog-carrying moon than first recognized. The satellite, experts at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory here say, is expected to make its final plunge through the earth’s atmosphere some time Saturday afternoon or evening. The end may well be spectacular, with the satellite glowing like a meteor and visible over a wide area.Launched Nov.3 with the shaggy dog Laika aboard, the half-ton weight of the Soviet moon with its canine space pioneer astonished the world. The three circling U.S.satellites are midgets by comparison.Today some scientists »t the «b^rvatory think the Soviet ac-1 I complishment of orbiting a dog with food, water and an air-conditioning system able to keep it alive for a week was actually considerably more impressive than the Western world realizes.; MAY BE HEAVIER They believe Sputnik II is four or five times heavier than the half-ton announced by the Russians. They figure there was a misunderstanding about the original announcement which the Russians for reasons of their own have allowed to remain unchallenged. The free world assumes Sputnik II weighs a half-ton because Russia announced a few hours after the launching that “the total weight of the instrument is 506.3 kilograms.” Various translations differ but all agree 508.3 kilograms was ! given after a listing of the instruments and dog. This is about Continued On Page 5 But today bands played and flags flew at flower-decked Feri-hegy Airport as Hungary’s Communist officialdom lined up to shake hands in farewell before Khrushchev took off in a Soviet jetliner for the flight to Moscow. As outlined by Khrushchev, the economic conference would have two aims: Getting the Communist bloc countries to co-operate with one another as well as with the Soviet Union, and speeding up their industrial specialization to integrate individual countries’ production into an over-all pattern. The meeting might be designed to produce the Communist bloc’s answer to Western Europe’s common market plan.Neither the date nor the place apparently has been set.Khrushchev complained that the Communist countries want to co-operate with Russia, “but not with one another.” At the windup of his eight-day visit, Khrushchev and the Hungarian Communist party chief, Janos Kadar, issued a communique repeating the Soviet Union's insistence that the political status of East Europe’s Communist countries is no question for discussion at any summit meeting. They said it would amount to interference in the affairs of sovereign states and be incompatible with the United Nations charter.Court Drama In Technicolor NEWCASTLE, England (AP)-Alfred Johnson, a paint sprayer I in a garage, was told by his boss i to quit sitting around and do a i little work.Johnson saw disagree with the policies of Prime Minister Diefenbaker's government. The report was ordered by the former Liberal government and its chairman, Walter Gordon, is a aupporter of Opposition leader I.ester Pearson.More than that, Mr.Gordon is believed to have had a hand in the formulation of Liberal economic policy for ih'e recent general election cami paign. One of the chief points of difference between the Gordon report and the Conservative government is over the best policy to follow during a recession. The Gordon report recommends that in times of prosperity and expansion.the government should budget for surpluses (as the late Liberal administration did) but in times of recession, the government should cut taxes and budget for deficits, This was generally the policy advocated by Mr.Pearson- Prime Minister Diefenbaker has put his faith rather in heavy spending on Report public works.I he commission comments that the effects of this may not be felt for a long time. However, it must be recalled that during the campaign Mr.Diefenbaker said that he would budget for deficits if necessary.I here are other differences but they are largely difference* of interpretation and emphasis.Basically, there can be little argument with the main theme of expansion and the concluding warnings of the report. The political aspects of the report do not mean that it should be quietly pigeon-holed by the government, as haa been suggested.I he Gordon commission warns that Canada'a expansion over the next 25 years may inevitably tie us clpser economically to the United States.Mr.Diefenbaker’s government is pledged to attempt to spread our trade more evenly between American and Commonwealth markets. But even a 15 per cent diversion of our purchases from the U.S.to Britain would leave a substantia! part of our trade with the U.S, Mr.Diefenbaker's government will undoubtedly study the report carefully and find it useful in meeting the problems C anada must face in the next quarter century.Test Ban There are a number of things to be borne in mind in connection with the Russian announcement of a halt to nuclear weapon* testing.I nst, the Soviet Union itself has just concluded an extensive, seiiea of tests. If the Russian* operate on anything like the time intervals the U.S.does, then they probably will not be ready for further teats until next year at about this time. They know full well that the U.S.has no intention of abandoning its next sequence of tests in the Pacafic this summer.Their test ban announcement is carefully worded, be it noted, to allow them to reconsider their Iran if oth era — meaning principally the United States — do not follow suit.In other words, they may have no veal intention of stopping tests at all.but are trying to capitalize on the pro paganda value of this announcement.1 he day the LI.S.explode* its first nuclear device of the season they can say, sanctimoniously, that all bets are A Gay 'Everywhere tbeie should exist an open tolerance, a gay tolerance, an atmosphere which could make our country, both figuratively and literally, a big country.” — Maurice Allard.M.P.for Sherbrooke at a recent meeting.Such a gay tolerance, said Mr.Allard, will be founded on national understanding.Coming from such a source it will be immeasurably superior to the studied tolerance of the surface kind which has often passed for the real thing and has certainly been better than no tolerance at all.1 his gay and genuine tolerance will not seek to reduce the differences be tween peoples of diffeient ancestries but will recognize them glad'lj and accept them.Propaganda off thereafter, since the U.S.failed to join them in the ban.Second, it could be that the "halt’’ in tests is also an effort to bluff us into stopping experiments that might soon produce an effective atomic de-lense against long range nuclear missiles.I his hope could not be very high in the Kremlin, but it may have been regarded as worth a try.Propaganda pressures can indeed be heavy.I hiid, as the Russians begin their propaganda field day over this dramatic maneuver, we cannot forget that even if they are sincere they are not necessaiily contributing materially to the future peace of the world.Whatever a test ban may do for t*he future physical safety of mankind from nuclear fallout, it does not materially reduce the threat of war.Soviet and American arsenals still bulge with nuclear weapons, and their production goes on.Lither nation, without ever again testing so much as an atomic bullet, could pour ruin upon the other.Tolerance l or who would wish to see the differences reduced ?It is the variations of language, custbms, appearance, outlook that help to make life interest-mg.ithout thenr we would be much closer to the drab greyness of a plod ding, robot world. In other day* —— sometimes in our own — the different have paid in persecution for the crime of being different Vi itches were hanged at Salem.W e have come a long way from Salem.\\\\ e have accustomed our minds to increasing tolerance Today the inner acceptance of an understanding spirit has already been achieved by an enlightened few.It is this tolerance, a genuine tolerance, at which we all should aim.Letter To The Editor The Editor, Sherbrooke Daily Record, Dear Sir: Now that the federal election is over and the smoke of battle has cleared away perhaps we ean Pirn our attention to some of the more immediate problems which confront us.I would like to mention a problem we have here concerning the transportation of our children to school. We live in * consolidated school area and in these parts our children are being picked up with panel trucks. In one instance there are 19 children carried in one of these panels. The children entering at the front opposite from the driver past a seat which folds down to allow them to get in the back. The seats are around the sides and across the end at the back These panels have no windows in the xides and no emergency door to open and get out in case of accident, the two rear doors opening only from the outside. Our school bo a ni had a contract with the drivers of these panels for two years which expires this spring. We are told that the school board approach-1 ed the Department at Quebec re grants to buy a large school bus to replace these panels and they were told no grants were avaii-able.I am wondering how your readers would like their children to be transported this way in peril of their lives. In case an accident should happen the children would have no way to get out should the vehicle overturn and worst of all, catch fire. Our school board is paying 25 cents a mile for these panels includin’ the mileage the driver makes to return home morning and night.I might also avid that the Catholic schools in 'this district operate large regular school buses over these same routes in question.I am writing this letter in the hope that it may reach the attention of proper authorities and the situation will be remedied ! or that public opinion may be : aroused to the point where the powers that be will pay attention.Worried.Dunham.Que DOWNRIGHT insulting (Detroit Free Press) At Monterey (Cal.) the local chapter of the Association of the United States Army passed a resolution deploring televisions
