-—(JP)— Christian Pineau completed a proposed govern-ment lineup' early today, but within a few hours three of his 16 nominees withdrew at their party's request. All were followers of Gen.Charles de Gaulle.Their action sent Pineau scurrying for replacements. He had ooped to ask the National Assembly Friday to approve his cabinet and contirm him as France's first Socialist premier since 1947.Those who withdrew were Edward Corniglion-Molinier, who had been named to the justice ministry: Pierre Ferri, named to die ministry of posts, telephone *nd telegraphs; and Andre Gau-nert, secretary of state for commerce. Two Gaullists chose to stay in Pincau's government, Maurice Lemaire, minister tor reconstruction and Diomede Catroux, secretary of state for air. Both held he same positions in Pierre Uendcs-France's government. The withdrawals left the other 15 ministries divided this way ¦ mong five parties: Socialists 4, Mouvement Républicain Populaire 4, Radical Socialists 4, Gaullists 1, and the small leftist Union of Democratic and Socialists Resistance 2 Without Gaubert, this is the i ncup of the other 18 secretaries e( state, whose posts arc below ministerial rank but are part of ihe government: Socialists 6, Radical Socialists 5.MRP 4, Gaullists 1 and UDSR 2.Before the Gaullist defection the most favorable estimates had given Pineau less than 320 supporting votes in the 627-member chamber. With likely abstentions that should have assured his continuation, but promised a shaky government with a brief life expectancy.Pineau was called in by President Rene Coty Monday to try to form France’s 21st post-liberation cabinet—a task in which both Antoine Pinay, Conservative Independent, and Pierre Pflimlin of the Catholic Mouvement Républicain Populaire had failed. If Pineau wins Assembly approval he will be the first Socialist premier since Paul Ramadier's government resigned in November! .1947.Since the 1951 elections the Socialists have even refused to serve in any cabinet because of their adamant stand for a program completely in line with party principles. However, they voted solidly for Pierre Mendes-France, whose defeat on a vote of confidence Feb.5 launched the present government crisis. It is reported Pineau will be premier and foreign minister and will have two deputy premiers, former Foreign Minister Robert Schuman of the MRP and Yvon Delbos of the Radical Socialists, Survivor Tells Of Struggle To Rescue Friends Montreal.— — A 26-year-old visitor at the midtown apartment building where 11 persons were burned to Staff Writer Montreal — (CP) — Eleven persons died Wednesday night and at least a dozen injured when fire whipped through the lop floors of an old brick apartment building in the heart of Montreal.Firemen, scrambling up ladders in a heavy, wet snow, rescued a score of screaming men and women from woo,den balconies and window ledges. The 11 victims died trying to fight their way through flame-and-smoke-filled halls and stairways of the four-storey Salaberry apartments at the corner of Sherbrooke Street East and St.Denis Street. At least fotir panic - stricken apartment dwellers gambled on leaps from the fourth floor to the pavement. Two women were in serious condition in hospital with fractured spines.Four Die In Collision In Quebec Area Grondines, Quo.— ((ft —Three men and one woman were killed during a blinding snowstorm early today when their car skidded into the path of a semi-trailer truck near this town, 60 miles west of Quebec.Another woman was critically injured and taken to hospital to Quebec. All were from Arvida, Que., and were on their way to Shaw-inigan Falls, police reported.Dead are Alcide Veilleux, 65; his sons Rene, 27, and Alcide, Jr., 30: anad Mrs.Marie Veilleux, wife of Alcide, Jr.Mrs.Ernest Reid, daughter of the older man, was hauled from the totally smashed car and taken to hospital with multiple fractures.Police said the truck, belonging to a Montrcad transport firm, was headed for Quebec when the accident occurred.Driver J.P.Ca-ouette of Quebec was uninjured.Caouctte told police the Vcil-leux’s car skidded across the road directly inlo his path and he didn’t have time to stop the heavy semi-trailer.The bodies were taken to a morgue at nearby Donnacona, Que.All attempts to identify the dead were left until today.Morgue officials said some were so badly burned that even^ their sex could not be determined immediately.Firemen still probing the up-uer-floor ruins early today said there was “only a very slim possibility” any bodies were still inside. The fire was the worst in Montreal since 1951, when 37 pensioners died in a fire which destroyed the Ste.Cunegonde Home for the Aged. Two victims—-an elderly man and his wife—were found just a few feet from their bed.Another man had struggled to within inches of a first-floor window.Residents said the building had two fire escapes, both leading to an enclosed inner courtyard From there the fleeing residents had to pass through ground-floor apartments.Survivors said the lights went out shortly after the fire started, adding to the panic. When firemen arrived, the residents were standing on window ledges and balconies, screaming for help."We rescued as many as we could,” said one firemen, “but we didn’t have much time.” Residents of the area said the building was built about 75 years ago, and renovated about 25 years ago after fire damaged it.Most of the apartments were small, housing single persons or families of two or three. As the victims were brought out, the fire department chaplain.Rev.Paul Morin, pronounced the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church over them. Most of the apartment residents were French-speaking.All the victims lived on the two top storeys of the 85-apnrt-ment building.Firemen said they apparently learned of the fire too late and the burning stairway prevented their escape.Early today the cause of the fire had not been established.Fire Director Raymond Pare speculated “it may have started in an incinerator shaft.” The first: alarm was turned in shortly before 9 p.m.EST.By the time firemen arrived flames were shooting through the roof. The blaze was out of control for more than three hours.Four bodies were discovered shortly after the tire started. When firemen entered the top floor they found five more victims.Early today, two more were discovered.Among the 12 persons taken t,p hospital, three were firemen who were cut and burned. The others were suffering from injuries received in jumping and from shock.Antonio Talbot, who lived near the apartment house, said he saw one man hang a woollen blanket from a window, hold it while his wife slid down, then jump the remaining two storeys.“One elderly woman appeared oricfly at a window, and started tossing out clothing. Then she let out a horrible scream and disappeared.” Survivors sobbed openly in the streets outside as they watched the flames licking at their apartments. Some were without coats but all scorned oblivious of a heavy wet (snow that was falling.“My wife is still inside,” one man screamed as firemen carried him from the building.Long-time residents of the mid-town residential area said the Salaberry building was once one of the most luxurious houses in the city.In recent years the oncc-sumptuous apartments have been subdivided. An estimated 200 persons lived in the building but many Continued on Page 5.Si*» WAR'S
