manager Richard Coney.Plans call for the construction of new lifts, trails, tennis courts, shelter facilities and a commercial and resKten4i.il housing development as well as a golf course. The program calls for the development of the mountain area as a year round recreation resort.Mr.Coney notes that the development was a master plan by Sno Engineering Inc., of Franconia, N.H., a firm that has planned numerous other ski areas in the Dated States and Canada.Tsurke Mountain, one of the largest undeveloped mountains in the East, with a vertical rise of over 2.000 feet, has servent as a ski area since the 1930 s, but on a comparatively small basis. Now directors of Burke Mountain Recreation Inc, are ready to go ahead with a major expansion program. They recently acquired 1,000 additional acres of nearby farm land and wooded area to facilitate the project which was initiated this year with the construction of a new trail, the insetallation of a T-Bar and additions of the base lodge. The remainder of planned improvements, Mr.Coney says, will be done over a five-year period. This year Burke Mountain will he operating with one trail classified \"advanced,\u201d one \"good novice to intermediate\" trail, and three \"intermediate to advanced\u201d trails. He added there are four open slope areas which offer good skiing for the beginning and intermediate skier. The advanced trail, about three-quarters of a mile long, was added this year. The toll road trail, two-miles long, is the longest trail at the ski area. The five trails starting at the summit are served by a 5,000 foot Pomalift, which also serves three trails on the open slopes. Some of the trails have been widened to make them suitable for more skiers of varying abilities, the manager said.He noted that one trail has been widened over 60 feet in some sections and that a section of open slope part way up the mountain at the Big Dipper and the Twin Dipper has been bulldozed, graded, groomed and seeded. He notes that the Big Dipper has been extended to link with the old rope tow area, and the Twin Dipper, opened last season.has been sidened at the bottom and tied in with the open slope above the.lunch bar building. The Old Bear Dean, with an average width of 150 îeet, was extended up the mountain to create the new, three-quarters of a mile-long trail, Mr.Coney reports, I «r When in Lyndonville .Visit
