end to Britain’s draft, sharp cuts in defence spending and swift action to obtain a world disarmament pact. The Labor MBs signed a declaration saying the Soviet announcement makes it "clear that the challenge of communism is economic, social and political, not military, and that the Soviet Union wants peace as much as any country in the world.” Prime Minister Eden himself has welcomed Russia's announced arm cuts, but he has emphasized the Soviets merely are copying the Western Allies who were the first to reduce their armies after the Second World War.The Eden government also has made clear that there is no justifica-, tion for major defence program reduction. In Washington, Defence Secretary Wilson said the United States expects to maintain armed forces of their present size for years to come. Moreover, he added, these forces would be given new weapons and equipment “which will make the maximum use of fire power.” However, Harold E.Stassen announced President Eisenhower’s special task force of military, nuclear and industrial leaders would meet May 29 to analyze the implications of the Soviet military reduction.Their discussion will be tied in wilh the failure of the recent London disarmament talks.Moscow followed up its announcement.of a slash of 1,200,-000 men and 375 warships in the next year by calling on the two strongest Western Allies to match its mood.“Why does not Britain follow the Soviet example since so much is being said about the crippling effects of the military burden on Britain's economy?” Moscow radio asked. The it is only a Sabbath day's journey from Jerusalem and quite near Bethany. As I climbed that Hill of Fulfilment, that bridge which now connects earth to heaven, I could not but think of Bethlehem, that bridge which by the Birth of Christ connected heaven to earth.Between Bethlehem and Olivet then, as the earthly locale, the Drama of Jesus—the Life of Christ—was enacted. Now that Drama had to go forward. The good news of that Drama had to be witnessed by the disciples and their successors, even unto the uttermost part of the earth. This was the Master’s directive; the disciples had no alternative but to go out (Acts 1:1).So missionary work had its origin in the Heart of Jesus. What a blessed moment that must have been when they reached the summit and Lo! as their Lord and Master raised His Hands in blessing, a cloud received Him out of their sight.(Acts 1:4).And it was an impenetrable cloud.A cloud of mystery. He had at last, as He said He would, gone home to His Father and our Father, Who art in Heaven. And ;he wind was blowing quietly ae-P’oj* Olivet. There and then Heaven became a blessed reality. For they were in the grip of the challenge of a new life in an Ascended Glorified Saviour And so In a glad, hopeful, exciting mood they walked back to Jerusalem and spent the ensuing ten days in prayer, awaiting the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. The Prologue is ended and on that first Whitsun morn, the curtain rose upon the handful of disciples—the original cell in which the form and active mission of the Church began to take shape.Ye members of the Church of God, see to it that ye imitate that original Cell who adopted the ascensional way of procedure Today, when the Church of God is confronted by a ruthless, well-disciplined well-organized enemy bent on Her destruction, we need to recapture the spirit of those mighty originals. They, though few in numbers, prayed together for guidance and for strength and courage to carry on their task tremendous, and God answered their prayers. He always has.And does-ac-cording to His story, History. The Fact remains that His Church, “in spite of dungeon, fire and sword” is still here and, assured of victory, going on, with the Cross of Jesus, going on before.Nothing can withstand that first century combination of unity of mind and united prayer. So Christ's Bride — His Church — is still a joy to the world. Now Joy.which marked the Bethlehem story, reached climatic proportions on Olivet. Will you herewith resolve to so recapture this spirit of joy that you, too, like those early Christians will go about with your feet barely touching the earth? This may not be as easy as it sounds, involving, as it does, the definite planning of laying up treasures in heaven (Matthew 6) by sending up reserves in ad- vance.I like to think that perhaps St.Paul meant something like this w hen he challenged the Colossians (3:1) to “seek those things which are above” by focussing their attention on Jesus ONLY, their High Priest, their Mediator, and Advocate (I Tim.2-5) Intercessor (Heb.7:25 their Brother and Friend, “so kind, true, and tender, who pursues at the right hand of God the Father, His mighty plan, prépara tory to the time when He, their Forerunner, shall come again in glory to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end.Be of good cheer: There’s heavenly grace-power-available.in an answer to prayer to help us make each day an Ascent With Christ.Last Sunday was Mother's Day.^ Our French compatriots call it “Jour des Mamans.” And if there I is one group that fits naturally into the ascensional molif, it is surely that of worthy mothers. So, on that day of memory, 1 hope you rethought the story of your life and I think you will find that it can be described as an ascent with Mother.Recently I read that “Canada is largely a mother-made land, due to those pioneer mothers of yester-years who trained — built — up their sons and daughters, physically, menially, morally, spiritually, at a cost of much personal dedication, instruction, and personal example.Today, this all important hu-man-divina work continues with mothers who in training their children to climb the Ladder of life with its four basic rungs, so judiciously apply the laws of love, service and sacrifice that Father Time registers Progress.: Let a mother, a modern poetess, interpret this ascensional way beginning with an accent on her responsibilities rather than on her privileges."Let me be wise enough to love my children without possessing them" she penned, “Let me be wise enough to earn their respect—not demand it; Let me be as under-standiFe and patient with their mistakes as with my own; above all, let me remember that these 1 children of God have been graciously loaned to me so that to-i gether we may find the Christ in one another. And with “let me ; be thankful every moment of every day for this responsibility I a chance to serve others and to | grow” that wise mother conclud-I ed her prayer.Life unmistakoably shows us that when this credo is reversed j there is a descent, a moral and ; spiritual decline with “waves' bearing the imprint of undisciplined living, dishonesty, temperance.1 am not naive enough to attribute all the disturbing trends among young people today to unworthy mothers and fathers. They have their share and be cause of their failure, I am going to keep on praying and asking the Holy Spirit to inspire and guide them to begin all over again, imitating Mary the mother of Jesus.(Acts 1:14).Now God could not be everywhere so He appointed mother as His proxy. This trainer, provider, protector, builder, has no alternative but to strive to be perfect, j even as Christ is perfect, and to lead others to adopt and attain unto this standard. For this exacting rewarding, glorious ad venture with Him He has pro- j vided the means of grace, the j grace of love, in unlimited quan- ; tities. And in our hearts we know ' that those who avail themselves j of these means of grace are the mothers of whom Canada is proud.God bless all such Mothers.May they continue their as cent with Christ.THE ASCENSIONAL LIFE Finally, from Olivet, the Mount of Ascension, conics the challenge to revaluate and accentuate the spiritual.Up there in that mid-way, earth-heaven atmosphere, the conviction grips one of the importance and reality of | the unseen spiritual world, with heaven, whither Christ has as-1 cendcd as the heart's true home. This requires a faith like the early disciples possessed, a faith : that sees heaverî through the clouds so that they could “in heart and mind thither ascend and with Him continually dwell”.This divine secret which issues in worship and great joy you must share with men thy breth-ern, here, there, everywhere, so that they may be challenged to send up good deeds spiritualized material—for the construction of their heavenly home. This is a personal responsibility.Let us see to it [hat we neglect not great an enterprise. The saints didn't! the story of.their lives is being and will be continued in the lives of all the: holy and humble who “drawn up ; to Christ” keep wrestling, fight irtg, and praying as they fight their way through to victory and the City of God.Pause frequently on your Olivet where, after your contract with the unseen and spiritual— the Ascension, Glorified, Lord and Saviour—you must, like those disciples on that first century May morn, come down and go out and in serving the Lord with gladness, demonstrate that life is an ASCENT WITH CHRIST.“I WOULD BE TRUE" Here is a hymn which long has been a favorite with Christians of all ages, but few of those who sing it are aware that it was written in Japan.Howard Walter, its author, had no idea that he was creating a hymn when he penned his stanzas in a rather casual attempt to put some of the principles of his own life into verse. He called his poem “My Creed”.It was after he had been graduated in turn from two Am-j erican theological seminaries, at Princeton and Hartford, that Mr.Walter decided to go to Japan. He felt that a period of Christian work abroad would be helpful and he spent a year at Waseda University in Tokyo. It was here that he wrote his i verses. The young American became very popular with the Japanese students and made many friends during his year among them.Later, he decided to devote his life to Christian work in the | Orient and he served for many | years in India and China, as I well as in Japan.BYGONE DAYS Jacoby On Bridge THIRTY YEARS AGO From the Record of Wednesday, May 13, 1926.A telegram to the Afton Posten from Spitzbergen, says that Lieutenant Commander Richard Byrd, United States Navy, first man to fly over the North Pole, plans to undertake an expedition to the South Pole, as soon as possible.Detained in Ottawa and obliged to report daily by order of the customs committee, J.H.Gauthier, partner in the R.and G.Manufacturing Company overall manufacturers of Rock Island, yesterday was given 48 hours to produce books from the firm which between the middle of March and May 7th, disappeared after of ficial auditors had commence?) examining them. The Grand Lodge of Quebec is holding its 47th annual session in Sherbrooke today. The convention was called to order at ten o'clock in the Unity I,odee Room, by Grand Master G.S.Heath.TWENTY YEARS AGO From the Record of Tuesday, May 19, 1936.Tacitly inviting the nations of the world to enter a "frank exrhange of views” on money matters, the United States moved today to help China stabilize her currency.Discovery of a fifth Jewish body in the old quarter of the Holy City of Jerusalem today forced heavy British patrols to stand guard along the Jem- salem Haifa highway and railroad to prevent sabotage. An attack by 1,000 Arabs on a funeral of a slain Christian led authorities to fear Arab anti-Jewish feeling was spreading to include all foreigners in Palestine.Philemon Boisvert, 18, of Wotton, was declared mentally unfit to stand trial when he appeared in Court of King’s bench here this morning on a charge of murdering his grand, father following an argument over a sleigh on Christmas Eve.NEED FOR LIGHT London Free Press Senator Jean-Francois PouF iot ebullient little man from Quebec recommends certain changes in the Canadian Senate. For example; HAPPY ENDING The opening bid of two no-trump shows 22 to 24 points with balanced distribution and all four suits well stopped In today's hand, South stretched one point on the theory that his strong five-card diamond suit more than made up for the missing point.Unfortunately for South, his , partner also chose this time to stretch.North had only 10 points and therefore could assume only | 32 points in the combined hands.North knew that 33 points are usually needed for slam, but he thought his strong five-card club suit would make up for the missing point. The result of the two stretches was that South was in a slam with only 31 points in the combined hands. This is not as bad as it sounds. If we never get to a worse slam contract, we should feel satisfied with our bidding. After all, only the spade lead gives South any trouble.Put the queen of spades in the East hand, and West wouldn't dream of leading spades away from the king against a slam in no-trump.As the cards actually lay, West opened the king of spades.South saw that he could wdn the ace of spades, five diamonds, and five clubs. This wmuld be enough for a meek dowm one East would signal his ace of hearts, and West would save the queen of spades and a heart to the end.The only chance was to win the first trick and lead a spade right back.South did so, and West had to follow suit and could only hope that his partner would suddenly develop mental telepathy in order to find the heart NORTH 19 A J 8 4 V J 10 4 ?K 5 A A J 10 9 2 WEST EAST AKQ 10 952 A 7 3 ¥763 ¥ A 9 8 2 ?84 4 97 6 2 A 6 3 A 7 5 4 SOUTH (D) A A 6 ¥ K Q 5 4 A Q J 10 3 A K Q 8 North-South vul.South West North East 2 N T.Pass 6 NT.Pass Pass Pass Opening lead—A K îthift. As is usually the case, West didn’t develop new gifts. He was afraid to lead a new: suit for fear of giving declarer a free finesse.West therefore led a third spade, and South gratefully took his 12 tricks.CARD SENSE Q—The bidding has been: West North East South 1 Club 1 Spade Pass You, South, hold: Spades Q-8-5, Hearts 6-2, Diamonds A-K-Q-4-2, Clubs 7-3-2, What do you do?A—Bid two spades.A diamond bid would deny support for spades. The raise in spades is much more encouraging.TODAY’S QUESTION The bidding is the same as in the question just answered, You, South, hold: Spades 8-6, Hearts K-.T-5-2, Diamonds 9-4-3, Clubs A-Q-8-4.What do you do?Answer Tomorrow NOW SHE HAS A HEW MOHdAV *^AS hTMg D RlfcO nttOUT Y o o .THANKS TO NEW Westinghouse "Cfcualitv-First ** LAUNDRY TWINS Ijtmndramat {Madel ClJi).Sleek design .*lick performance thanks to the excluaire “NEW WAY TO WASH” Agi-Tumble Action that gises gentle, thorough washing.Agi-Turable Action Hushes .lifts .turns and tumbles your clothes in hot water 50 times s minute. And, control is completely flexible! 1140 Ste.Therese (Cor.of Dcnault) LO.2-8251 CARS ARE MY LINE t.lit. £5 by: Thomas H.Fox Almost everyone can remember the days w>hen the standard color for automobiles was black. You expected a car to be black just as refrigerators today are white.Twenty years ago, black was the color of 75 per cent of the cars made; today only 10 per cent of our ears are black.Livelier shades on automobile bodies only became practical in 1939 w hen the development of titanium and cadmium increased the durability of auto paint by 400 per cent. Now that almost any shade of exterior finish is possible, psychologists are starting to develop theories about automobile colors—and 111 pass them along for what they're worth. You can try them out.on your own car.or on the cars at our lot.First of all, two-tone color jobs are supposed to make a car look longer and lower.Colors at the red end of the spectrum make a car look bigger, the psychologists say, while colors at the blue end make it look smaller. At the same time they say that dark colors make a car look larger and lighter.Where this leaves a car that's dark red or light blue; I haven't the foggiest idea, since according to these theories they would be both heavier and lighter at the same time. The durability of ear paints that came with the application of titanium and cadmium has been a great boon to the used car buyer, as anyone can see by looking at the colorful display on our lot here at Foxbrooke Motors. That showroom shine lasts a lot longer these days, and especially on cars that have been given reasonable care. That's the kind we buy, and the kind we sell.t SHERBROOKE DAILY RECORD.SATURDAY, MA'» !«.m(> Thirteen I Sherbrooke Rating Club To Open Sunday; Nine Rates On Program TV Set To Be Given Away; Four
