might work came out of Cairo Wednesday The Egyptian who heads the new organization operating the nationalized waterway made this threat: ft British and French canal pilots quit their jobs as some have done, British and French ships will have to wait to get through the canal They'll he put at the end of the lineup of ships, behind those of every other nationality.I.ater.Cairo denied any such threat had been made But ae cording to the New York Times the denial was a result of the furore the threat had created abroad The West had argued that it is to guard against discriminations of that type that a truly interna tional authority to run the canal is necessary.A plan to that end was adopted at the London conference on Suez, which wound up its work Thursday. The plan will be submitted to Egypt, aware of the fart that L’Egare II made it to England maimed by three Frenchmen who set out from Halifax in the spring. Not so long ago three other adventurous Frenchmen started out from Quebec City fur a trip, estimated to take four years. They had planned to travel through the I'nited States and on to Central America. The wagon, drawn by two horses passed through Sherbrooke almost three weeks ago.The trio made an official visit to City Hall and were received by Mayor Nadeau and city council, signed the golden hook and were provided with credentials from the city. This procedure had been followed by the group in every city and town in which they slopped.A lot of people took a lot of trouble to receive the men, but to what avail? They have been in Rock Island for the last two weeks, unable to cross the border into Vermont.Apparently the I'nited States government is asking a $1,500 deposit from the group to guarantee that they will not become public charges. They, of course, will hear nothing of it.It seems that the first deposit asked was $4.000 but after an 11 hour (almost unbelievable) conference with the attorney-general of Vermont, the sum was reduced to S1.500.Now one of the trio, Paul Lapointe is leaving for Washington to get the matter straightened out with the government. The other two have left for their homes, one in Three Rivers and one in Montreal. They are determined to continue their journey and if they can start in two weeks, they will be able to reach New York bv October but if the caravan is stalled for any other length of time, the trip will have to be postponed until next spring. It seems rather odd that members of the expedition were armed with letters from Federal Cabinet Ministers, Premier Duplessis and visas for entry to Mexico and other countries, only to be stopped b> immigration officials, because, as potential residents of the United States, they lacked the necessary capital.A ¦'îr 'A CLOSING WEEK — With the playing of Noel Coward’s ‘‘Blithe Spirit” the North Hatley Playhouse will close its first season next week. With an unscheduled expansion of 70 seats in the first season, those responsible for the organization and smooth running of the Playhouse this year spared nothing for its success.Originally, a three-week French theatre run had been planned to finish out the season but this has been postponed until the start of ne# season, probably in' June 1957.There seems to be a scarcity of actore in Montreal, thus creating a vacuum in the television industry. Most Montreal regulars are either at the.Stratford Shakespearean Festival or at the Edinburgh festival in Scotland.Apparently some actors who were scheduled at North Hatley had contracts running over a twm or three week period and they could not be released. The Paul Hebert troupe could have come for one week, but found it.impossible for three thus forcing the postponement of the appearance.? -fr ?SUBLIME TO RIDICULOUS — The Canadian Federation of Mayors and Municipalities has just closed its annual confab in Hamilton. One man who will be popular upon his return Is Mayor Hardy of Shawinigan Falls, who told the convention that municipalities are asking the federal and provincial governments for increased financial aid because they want to divert the blame for higher taxes. He was the only Mayor who suggested that growing municipal costs should be met by increasing taxes.Attending from Sherbrooke were Mayor Armand Nadeau and Aldermen Camirand and Nicol, .A Toronto University professor told the convention that if the public is apathetic toward civic affairs, municipal politicians are to blame. They don’t insist on enough pay, .He probably doesn't know Mayor Nadeau.Salaries suggested for Mayors of large cities was $25,000.Controllers should get $15,000 and aldermen from $10,000 to S12.000.Now that gives Sherbrooke city council something to shoot for.? ?ODDS AND ENDS — Stiify Stafford sold his New Cliff House in Ayer’s Cliff to a Magog resident three weeks ago.City has almost completed the paving program.Fabi and Fi’.s, who received a eontract from the city to do some of the paving are expected to start their end of the job by next Thursday.? ?Fall is nearly here with the opening of the Sherbrooke Fair tonight.Ralph Flanagan and his orchestra, one of the top bands in the land, will play at the arena tonight.Wonder what work has been done on Town Planning.An., expert is being paid 815,000 this year but there have been no progress reports so far.w t* Ontario Tax System Simpler, Levies Lower, Mayor Declares Ontario citiiens do not pay more taxes than residents of Quebec, but the Ontario citizen knows how much he will pay and therefore there is a more stable taxation on the preparation of a master plan for the City of Sherbrooke is progressing rapidly according to Director of Services Charles Langlois. The town planning expert hired by the city, Jean-Claude Luhaie of Quebec City, has been in Sherbrooke for Hie last three days and is at present working v?n the economic survey of the city.Mr.Langlois said the purpose of this survey, not expected by City Council at the time erf Lahaie’s engagement, is to find if the city has the means and administrative possibilities of carrying out the findings of the town planning expert.Mr.Langlois explained that a certain fear has existed in the past in other cities that once a master plan has been drawn up, City officials will fake the plans and put them on a shelf.‘'The town planning expert wants to find out if Sherbrooke is capable of carrying out the recommendations which he will eventually make to City Council,” declared Mr.Langlois.In order to make an economic survey, Mr.Langlois explained, an economist must be hired. He said a Quebec expert has been engaged by Mr.Lahaie to do this job.He is a qualified economist and lawyer.During the course of the survey, the economist will delve into the financial history of Sherbrooke over the past ten years.Studies are made of how much money has been spent on waterworks, sewers and other services, as well as the amount of taxes paid by property holders and other citizens. The, City is waiting for a map which is being prepared from photographs taken by Photographic Surveys Ltd.The company has taken pictures of the citj-and their employees now are transferring the information gathered in the photos onto a map which will contain contour lines every five feet.Once the map is in the hands of city engineers and the town planning expert, a more complete work can be undertaken. It was explained that the economic survey was started while awaiting the arrival of the map.The City Council last fall voted the sum of S15.000 toward the completion of a master plan, which will allow for the development of Sherbrooke on a well planned and logical basis. The work is scheduled to take nearly three years and additional sums of money will be voted in future budgets.will'.‘ T " ¦ ' T#A te .-'r/V Beef Cow Winner — Ayer’s Cliff fair. The fi /e-yc Nichol and Sons Farm, Ler.n Nichol tnne .1-, holdir the (P ltd judged yesterday at 20th, Hamilton and he described the latter as much simpler than Sherbrooke's.The Ontario provincial government has a system of statutory grants which are made to each municipality These include a S3 00 per capita grant, grants for highways, public assistance and diverse other thing,v Besides looking over the va Illation and taxation systems of Hamilton, Mayor Nadeau was conducted on a tour of the city and he pointed out that Hamilton has four swimming pools, three of which were completed just recently. He said he has received plans and estimates of these pools from Hamilton officials and that perhaps some thing definite could be done for Sherbrooke on this matter.Th« Mayor pointed out that Hamilton received over $5.000.000 in grants from the Provincial Government last year. The per capita grant was $673,000, highway grants, $840,000, and public welfare $1,486,000.He said the provincial government takes care of highways entering and leaving the cities, paves the road and sees that they arc properly maintained.Turning to the simpler tax structure Mayor Nadeau said that Hamilton has no tenant tax, garbage or hose tax and have nothing to do with electricity because the plants arc operated by a separate Commission. With the money which Hamilton and all other Ontario municipalities receive trom the provincial govcrnnicnl they can make something of I heir ciliés.He referred to the machinery tax which is presently enforced in Sherbrooke for school purposes and said that Ontario ciliés by virtue of a law passed by Hu’ Provincial Government do, not impose such a tax.The null rate m Hamilton is 4!) compared with 23 in Sherbrooke but on the other hand property is valuated at 35 percent of the value, whereas in Sherbrooke it varies from 65 to 70 per cent Industry pay taxe* based on the property valuation to which is added 60 per cent of the valuation as a business tax. Therefore if a property is valued at $1.000,000 the owner pays 49 mills on $1.600,000, because of the 60 per cent business t»x.The Mayor said he questioned several people on the matter of industry. He said he was told that it was all a matter of geographical location European industrialists prefer locating in Ontario because it is in the centre of Canada and communication i* much simpler.1 V ItOUTHIM IF.lt, who is receiving the congratulations of Ins many friends today on the occasion of his for the larger part of its population. In this great agricultural development the Eastern Townships, that rich area radiating from Sherbrooke which is known as the Queen of the Eastern Townships, has long been to the fore front It stands as a leader in animal breeding and field crops, in dairying and poultry, in beef cattle and maple products, etc., while keeping to the fore in industrial and commercial holds.Urban communities provide excellent markets for the sale locally of farm produce and the rural population constitutes a first class market for manufactured goods This mutual assistance huilds up a very healthy economic situation and is beneficial to the community It gives me great pleasure to urge consumers to visit the agricultural sections of the Sherbrooke Fair and see for themselves the choice products offered them by farmers in their own districts.I particularly invite them to visit the exhibit of the Provincial Department of Agriculture showing how the Provincial Government aids in promoting agricultural prosperity. An unfailing barometer of the progress registered from year to year in the picturesque region lying south of the St.Lawrence River, the Sherbrooke Fair is a credit to its organizers, to the population at large and to the Province.HON LAURENT BARRE MINISTER OF AGRICULTURI LA PROVINCE M ?t Ten SHERBROOKE DAILY RECORD.SATURDAY.AUGUST 25.1956 the famous Juan de Fuca strait from Port Angeles, Wash., to Victoria in the record time of 10 hours, 38 minutes. She bettered Bert Thomas’ time by almost an hour.It was her second attempt on the straight and kept her amazing record intact. The 18-year-old sweetheart from Toronto has emerged unbeaten after tangling with Take Ontario, the English Channel and the Juan de Fuca for the “grand slam’’ of swims. The finish of her epic struggle was a real battle against high waves and the game little youngster was forced to give every, thing she possessed to reach the wharf. She was determined to conquer it and went the limit to do so.An estimated crowd of between 25,000 and 30 000 was on hand to greet her and follow her throughout her last gruelling miles. When she was about four miles from her goal, fighting .1 heavy chop and brisk wind, she stopped swimming for a moment, shook her finger at Gus Ryder and said: “No matter what happens, what I say, in the next few hours, don’t pull me out.” She was making sure of finishing.Marilyn has certainly proven that she has fight, grit and determination and has made herself a niche in the sporting world with her fine victory out of their three remaining games to wrap up the title and if they continue at their present pace it looks as though it is all over but the shouting. The remaining games of tire schedule are slated to commence at fi.00 instead of 6.15.President Ted Anderson is making the change to allow more time to finish before darkness. The battle for second spot looks as though it will go right to the
