Dag Hammarskjold announced today that six countries have offered troops for an international United Nations police force to watch over a cease-fire in Egypt. The six are Canada, Colombia, Denmark, Pakistan, Norway and Sweden. In a report this morning to the General Assembly, Hammarskjold added that other countries were considering participation in the Canadian-proposed force, and he believed it should be possible to meet quickly at least the most basic need for personnel.” He estimated this at "a few units of battalion strength.Troops of the five 'big power” members of the Security Council — the United States, the Soviet Union, Britain.France and Nationalist China — are barred from the force.Hammarskjold reported as the — Assembly prepared for a new Port Said, continued despite sharp Soviet demands for an end to hostilities against Egypt. In a rapid series of moves, Pro truer Bulganin called on Pjvm dent Eisenhower for joint United States Russian action under the United Nations to bring a halt to the fighting.Declaring that the lighting "Contains thc danger of turning into a third world war,” Bulganin urged action "within hours ” The proposal for American-Soviet intervention drew a speedy rejection from Hie U.S.government as “Unthinkable," and later the UN .Security Council refused even to debate it.Bulganin also sent notes to Prime Minister Eden ami French Premier Guy Mollet warning grimly against further action against Egypt and saying Russia was determined to re-establish peace "by using force." His messages included references to "more powerful states" and rocket warfare. Here are the paragraphs from the message to Eden containing the rocket reference; "In what position would Britain have found herself if she herself had been attacked by more powerful states possessing every kind of modern destructive weapon?“And there are countries now which need not have sent a navy or air force to the coasts of Britain, toil could have used other means, such as rocket techniuoe."If rocket weapons had been used against Britain and France, they would probably have called this a barbarous action.” “We hope at this critical mo nient you will display due prudence anil draw the corresponding conclusions from this.” A note from Bulganin to Israel’s Premier David Bcn-Gurion also disclosed that Russia was recall ing her ambassador from Tel Aviv.Mollet met for four hours with his cabinet before dawn today, and a spokesman announced the operations in Egypt would continue. The French premier also planned to meet later today with Eden. This morning’s announcement of commando action came after hours of conflicting reports on the situation in thc earlier can al fighting.British-French paratroop units who had dropped into thc area reported an end to the fighting after little more than half a day’s action Later an allied communique said the Egyptian mil
