MAY MITCHELL REG’D 70 Albert St.AND STAFF Sherbrooke Tel.2-1422 ern Townships Telephone Company is essentially the story of Carlos Skinner.A jeweller and watchmaker by profession, he was a man of boundless energy with an abiding curiosity in new scien-lific developments. He first became intrigued with the possibilities of the telephone as a result of a series of articles about the new invention in the "Scientific American,” of which he was an avid reader.Following an article giving full details of the instrument in October, 1877, he determined to build a telephone for himself This he did, with the assistance of a friend, in 10 days.Having the telegraph agency for Waterloo at this time — he had opened a jewellery store there in 1859—he connected his instrument to the telegraph line to Montreal and spoke with the Montreal office. This call, over a distance of 60 miles, is one of the earlier long distance conversations to take place in Canada.Moving to Sherbrooke in 1878, Mr.Skinner opened a jewellery and watchmaking store which is still carrying on business under the direction of his grandson, Carlos C.Skinner.In January, 1880, the City of Sherbrooke ordered from Mr.Skinner a complete fire alarm system, based on plans w hich he had earlier submitted. This system consisted of 13 fire alarm boxes and was personally constructed by Mr.Skinner in his Strathcona Square shop (near where the court house now stands) and, considerably enlarged and somewhat improved, is still in use in Sherbrooke. This project was to have some unforeseen consequences, for it indirectly resulted in Mr.Skinner getting into the telephone business in competition with the Bell Company.Appointed Bell agent in 1880.he obtained some 130 subscribers in the lace of determined opposition on the part of the Dominion Telephone Company which was offering lower rates. Then, through a misunderstanding arising from a dispute between Mr.Skinner and By The Canadian Dress Christmas 1953 may not be the 1 whitest but it is one of the brightest Yuletide seasons in Canada in many years.Stores, homes and streets throughout the Dominion are decked with millions of lights and gay decorations. The main attraction in Edmonton is a 50-foot civig Christmas tree near Jasper avenue with 400 ! lights.Winnipeg homes are ablaze with what is described as the most colorful display of lights and decorations seen in the last 20 years.A lack of snow, however, is an almost general complaint of Canadians.Except for isolated areas in the south-central Drairies and northern Ontario, the countryside from the Maritimes to Vancouver has taken on an unseasona! look.High temperatures and barren fields are frustrating skiers and other win.• ter sportsmen. The outlook in New Brunswick is a little whiter; the weatherman has promised a possibility of a white Christmas.Colder weather was also welcomed in Montreal after residents were pelted with rain and thunderstorms.Today marks the homestretch lor Canadian commercial interests who have outdone themselves with elaborate window displays, Christmas shopping services and advertising campaigns. Many stores have adopted a policy of late closing hours to accommodate last-minute shoppers, while a Winnipeg credit jeweller is offering for sale anything in the store up to New Year's Day without a down payment.Once wide-open.Montreal will be somewhat less gay this veal due to early closing regulations imposed by the Quebec government. But Montrealers novcrlhe-less were making big preparations for private celebrations.Holiday liquor law offenders are being dealt with severely by Ontario police who have launched a clean-up campaign with indlvi dual fines for driving while impaired as high as $500.They have also raided private office parties.Arctic inhabitants are also in for their share of Christmas treats.Operation Santa Claus, the RCAE's annual jaunt up north will bring mail and goodies to government employees at
