[" Ul g c Galt monument decision this spring?A decision at to whether Sherbrooke will receive a federal government approved contemporary aculpture or a stone or bronze bust to commemorate Alexander T Galt, a father of confederation may be made this spring, Leon das Baehand, pres idem of the Eastern Townships Historical Society stud last night The bust versus sculpture controversy boiled over last fall when city council backed an Eastern Townships Historical Society resolution condemning the sculpture designed by Montreal sculptress Suzanne Guite. The resolution said the sculpture resembled a banana in appearance, Following an annual election meeting last night where he was reelected president, Mr Baehand told ITte Hecord he had received no official word whether the government had decided to erect the bust or the sculpture in the city's Mitchell Park He appeared optimistic that the Society's choice of a bust will be accepted It is believed the modem sculpture has a likeness of Galt In its base Desmond McKeon, who was re-elected as one of the Society's three vice-presidents and who drafted the resolution pass ed by city council last fall, said there will have to be a monu ment erected in the park since the old Galt home has been completely destroyed During the business meeting the following officers were elect- ed for l WO President leonidas Baehand; vice presidents, iCP) - United Nations Secretary-General U Thant arrived here today and immediately went into talks with a North Vietnamese government representative, p r e-sumably to get a message from Hanoi.Thant delayed his return to New York, previously scheduled for Tuesday night, after a tour of New Delhi, Moscow and London seeking to open the door to talks to end the Vietnam war.Thant talked in New Delhi with a North Vietnamese repre sentative, and there were re- ports in London a message from Hanoi was waiting for him in the office of Mai Van Bo North Vietnam's representative in the French capital. These reports said the message could be a reply to propos als for peace talks Thant made to Nguyen Hao, North Vietnam’s consul-general in New Delhi.Thant also is expected to meet French Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville. The secretary-general also is expected to meet President de Gaulle today, official sources said Thant held talks Tuesday with British Prime Minister Wilson and North Vietnamese journalist Nguyen Van Sao.Prior to his London visit, the secretary-general went to India and Russia on a tour regarded as an attempt to bring the Vietnam con flict to the conference table The North Vietnamese delegation in Paris has in the past told the French government of changes in Hanoi’s position on possible peace negotiations. In London, British newspapers speculate that Thant's sud- den decision to visit Paris is connected with a message from Hanoi The Conservative Daily Tele graph says: ‘‘It is believed he sent a message from Delhi to Hanoi and that he hoped to re ceive an answer during his Moscow visit which ended Monday. But he saw no North Vietnamese representatives while he was there.“The assumption must be that Thant yesterday received word in London that an answer to his message had been received, and would be available to him in Paris,” The Telegraph says The Liberal Guardian says it is thought Thant offered some new points to the North Vietnamese consul-general in New Delhi for transmission to Hanoi However, there was little optimism in Ixmdon that a further contact between Thant and Hanoi would be decisive for efforts to get the Americans and the communists to a conference table.Wilson recently visited both Soviet leaders in Moscow and President Johnson in Washington.m More troops go WASHINGTON (CP) - Some diplomatic observers said today President Johnson’s decision to send another 10,500 troops to South Vietnam is a warning to Hanoi that the U.S.will not be driven to the conference table under military pressure. The decision to send the troops came less than 24 hours after a report that North Vietnam apparently rejected U.S.peace moves. It also follows the recent huge Viet Cong — North Vietnamese offensive in the war.?Eight killed TEL AVIV (Reuters) — Eight Arab saboteurs were killed in a gun battle north of the Dead Sea Tuesday night, an Israeli army spokesman said today. He said one Israeli soldier was killed and another wounded in the engagement. The spokesman said an Israeli patrol intercepted the armed bands of Arabs late Tuesday hight soon after it crossed the River Jordan north of the Dead Sea.?More flights CAPE KENNEDY, Fla.(AP) — Recent successes in the US man-to-the moon drive may permit the space agency to squeeze in three manned Apollo flights this year, with the first launch perhaps two months sooner than scheduled. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s announced schedule calls for as tronauts Walter M.Schirra Jr., Donn F.Eisele and Walter Cun n i n g h a m to ride the first manned Apollo moonship into earth orbit in the “last quarter" of this year, meaning no sooner than October.?Two shot down SAIGON (AP) - U.S.fighter-bombers shot down two MiG-17 jets today, blasted three North Vietnamese airfields and lent a hand to U.S.marines trying to drive diehard North Vietnamese holdouts from the walled citadel of Hue.Two Air Force F-4 Phantoms encountered the MiGs 30 to 40 miles northwest of Hanoi and brought them down with missiles and 20-millimetre cannon, the air force said.Prosecution opens its case By RICHARD NUTBROWN (Record Staff Reporter) The trial of Andre Lamothe, accused with Jean-Jacques Gagnon of the capital murder of Henri-Paul Chandonnet began yesterday morning in Sherbrooke.Roch Lefrancois, special Crown prosecutor, began the trial by telling the jurors what the Crown will attemtp to prove. In his resume of the facts leading up to the disappearance of Paul Chandonnet, Mr.Lefrancois referred the jury to Article 21 of the Criminal Code.He said anyone who kills a person- helps to kill or encourages another to kill is guilty of murder. In his resume of the available facts he told the jury that the Crown will attempt to prove the accused knew the victim for many years. He sa.d the Crown will attempt to prove that Lamothe murdered Mr.Chandonnet, owner of a small snack bar on K.ng West Street in Sherbrooke at the time of death, because the victim wanted to tell the police about their relationship and what he knew about La-mothe’s business affairs.Dollard Dansereau, defense attorney, in speaking to the jury said the only thing the defense admits is that Chandonnet’s body was found in South Ham, in the District of St.Francis, on or about the seventh day of October, 1965.The first Crown witness, Richard Bourguignon, an employee of the victim at the time of Chandonnet’s death, testified he was working in the snack bar on the day Chandonnet was be- lieved to have died.He said he received a phone call from someone asking if Mr.Chandonnet was there. He said the voice over the phones was that of a man.“I told him Mr.Chandonnet wasn’t in and to phone back at around 4 p.m.,” he said. The original phone call was at approximately 2 p.m.He testified that Mr.Chandonnet did not come back that day at five o’clock, usually the time he stopped by to pick up the cash.Mrs.Henri-Paul Chandonnet testified she had met Lamothe a few times. She said she was introduced to the accused in 1961 by her husband. At the time of their first meeting she was not married to the victim. She testified her husband and Lamothe were business acquaintances while she and her husband lived in Alma and later in Quebec City. When questioned by Crown prosecutor Roch Lefrancois PROSECUTORS — Special crown prosecutors in the murder trial of Jean Jacques Gagnon and Andre Lamothe are, left, Roch Lefrancois and, right, Anatole Corriveau.(Record photo: Gerry Lemay) about the last day she saw her husband, Mrs.Chandonnet testified that Lamothe had telephoned her asking for her husband. She said she recognized his voice immediately and told Lamothe to telephone the snack bar which Chandonnet owned in Sherbrooke. She also identified a piece of doth from her husband’s suit found near the shallow grave where he was buried and his clothes burned.Paul Audet of Sherbrooke, a municipal garage attendant testified Chandonnet’s car remained in the parking lot for eight days before it was discovered by the QPP.Roger Arsenault, a Laurette-ville truck-driver, then testified that Lamothe had phoned on the day in question asking him to bring a .32 calibre pistol, serial number 724322, and some shells. He said he delivered them at 10:30 a.m.A map of the area in which the decomposed body, the revolver, 17 bullets, a handkerchief, and the charred ruins of Chandonnet's clothes were found was then shown. These articles, were found in three separate pits.Denis Viau, attached to the Montreal QPP homicide squad, testified that on Oct.8 the accused took agents of the Quebec Provincial Police to the scene of the crime and showed them the three pits.He testified that Gagnon, on the same day but at a different Erne, showed police the three pits.Eugene Berube, who is serving a prison term, testified he sold Lamothe the revolver for $100.Its either in or out of race for Trudeau OTTAWA (CP) - Justice Minister Trudeau either comes in or gets right out of the Liber al leadership race this week, informants say. He's expected to enter. If he doesn’t, he will surprise many of his supporters counting on him as the French-Canadian Quebec candidate.Mr.Trudeau is expected to say one way or the other by Friday. He has been under pressure to run from colleagues as well as from a developing groundswell of public opinion. Both Mr.Trudeau and Manpower Minister Marchand, 500 pigs killed DANVILLE - (Staff) - A fire here yesterday afternoon completely destroyed the bam of Laurent Roy- R.R.I Danville, and killed approximately 500 pigs that were trapped in the barn.Police officials in Danville said this morning the damages caused by the blaze of unknown origin may be as high as $30,-000.The barn was a large structure and besides the p.gs, Mr.Laurent also lost the hay he had stored as well as some farm implements.Twenty-three volunteer firemen from the Danville brigade were called to the scene at 4 p m.under the direction of as-s stant fire chief, Gilles Petit. When they arrived, there was a lack of water and since the flames were raging uncontrol-ably, the men concentrated on saving the other nearby buildings from the fire The volunteers returned at 7 last night but the barn was still smoldering early today. The Laurent farm is three miles from the municipality of Danville.Other animals in the bam escaped the flames.the party’s Quebec leader, were to discuss the former’s candidacy with Quebec MPs and senators at the group's regular weekly caucus meeting today.Mr.Marchand, who has been urging Mr.Trudeau to run, was to use his influence to swing the support of the bulk of the Quebec caucus behind Mr.Trudeau.It was thought the Quebec caucus would have a clearer idea of Mr.Trudeau's leadership intentions after the meeting. It was not thought Mr.Trudeau would announce his decision at the meeting.Rather he was expected to use it to help him make the final decision. If Mr Trudeau comes in he would be the 11th official candidate.leaving only Trade Minister Winters as a major doubtful starter.Trudeau supporters are ouild-ing an organization for their man on a haphazard basis to be ready for the run at the April 4-61eadership convention. It would be rapidly filled out if he entered If Mr Trudeau enters, observ- ers feel it would shake up the support lines and plans of the other seven major contenders. For one thing, Quebec delegate votes would cease to be a happy hunting ground for all candidates. The Trudeau Mar chand combination would work for a fairly solid bloc from their home province. In particular, two English-speaking candidates from Quebec, Consumer Affairs Minister Turner and Eric Kierans, retired president of the Quebec Liberal Federation, would be in a stiff new fight for home province support.Births, deaths 7 Government legislation aimed at cutting drug prices ran into unexpected cross-fire in the Commons Tuesday as a Liberal back-bencher joined Conservatives in attacking it.Raymond Rock ( Montreal Jacques-Cartier-Lasalle) said the bill would jeopardize Canadian jobs, the future of university graduates, the balance of payments and the drug industry itself. It would also destroy inventors' property rights, he said, and should be sent to a House committee where critics could put their views on record.Conservatives criticized safety guarantees as the bill was debated for the second day on second reading. The Senate, meanwhile, returned from recess a week early to open debate on the government broadcasting bill, passed by the Commons last week.MORE IMPORTS The drug legislation before the Commons would amend the Patents Act and the Trade Marks Act to allow broader importation of patented drugs in finished form under licence. It would also permit the importing of trade-mark drugs from foreign firms in competition with their Canadian subsidiaries.Liberal members have argued repeatedly that the measure has nothing to do with drug safety, but Conservatives Tuesday continued to raise questions in that area.Richard Cashin (L—St.John’s West) who accused Conservatives of using scare arguments planted by the drug industry-came under sharp attack from Mr.Rock, a fellow-Liberal.He said Mr Cashin’s speech sounded like a snow-job, and suggested he would be playing a d fferent tune if the bill allowed importation of cheaper fish—or if Mr.Cashin had drug firms in his constituency.Marvin Howe (PC—Welling-ton-Huron) said Canadian drug fiions have operated with an enviable record of safety and reliability for years.“But what guarantee is there in the case of imported material, originating we know not where?” STOP TRAGEDIES He asked Consumer Affairs Minister Turner to give serious thought to this aspect “in order to avoid the horrible tragedies to which Canadians and many thousands who live in other countr.es have been subjected in the past.” Dav'd Orlikow (NDP—Winnipeg North), said Dr.P.B.Ry-nard (PC—Simcoe East), who spoke against the bill Monday, wanted to give the drug compa-n es “a licence to continue stealing from the people of Canada.” Criticism of the bill had given the impression that there would be a great danger if Canadians were allowed to buy drugs under their generic names, as opposed to brand names, Mr.Orlikow said. But the “facts are very plain” that every hospital in Canada used generic drugs, and they would not do so unless they we.e safe.J.Angus MacLean (PC— Queens) said the drug industry was being depicted as a “gasping, bloated” one, but the myth that it was any better or worse than other industries had not been proved.Several Conservatives urged referral of the bill to a committee for study, but Mr.MacLean indicated this might be avoided if the government would accept some changes.Claim success TRURO, N.S.(CP) - Both sides claimed success Tuesday following a Nova Scotia provincial byelection in Robert Stanfield’s old riding.Conservative Gerald Ritcey retained the former premier’s seat in Colchester for T’rem er G.I.Smith’s government, but Mr.Ritcey’s majority over Liberal candidate Hector Hill was sharply cut from the edge polled by Mr.Stanfield in last May’s election.House, CLC clash on economy OTTAWA (CP) - Sharp words were exchanged Tuesday between the cabinet and the Canadian Labor Congress over government handling of the economy.Prime Minister Pearson firm ly ejected the CLC’s allegation that economic policies adopted in the November budget are a concession to the “rich and powerful” at the expense of the wage-earner.Donald MacDonald, acting president of the 1,500,000-mem her central labor body, countered that the poor employment outlook for 1968 can lead to no other conclusion.Later in the two hour session Mr.MacDonald clashed with Manpower Minister Marchand over the CLC’s opposition to a labor bill now before Parliament that would revamp the Canada Labor Relations Board The occasion was the annual presentation of the CLC brief to the cabinet, a 13,000-word document that featured heavy criticism of Ottawa's economic deci-s i o n s and the controversial labor bill.FLANKED BY CABINET Mr Pearson was flanked by 15 members of his cabinet; Mr.MacDonald by more than 300 union leaders from across the country. The prime minister said the CLC's proposals for federal stimulation of the economy were “the wrong kind of ad- vice” in the current financial situation.Heavy spending would lead to bigger deficits, higher taxes, increased prices and the threat of recession.Mr.Marchand criticized the CLC’s attack on the labor bill. The brief said it would destroy national bargaining and is a political gesture to the Confederation of National Trade Unions. The minister, former president of the CNTU, said the aim is to give workers freedom to belong to a union of their own choice.Opposition to the measure was “propaganda.” Mr.MacDonald countered: “I say to you in all seriousness there has never been such a threat to industrial peace in this country.” i SHERBROOKE DAILY RECORD, WED , FEU impressive auditorium The combination, however, did not add up to a happy hour for television viewers tuned to NBC The problem, quite simply, was one of size and shape Hope, with Bing Crosby and Pearl Bailey, performed on an enormous bare platform in the centre of the vast place. While the microphones functioned satisfactorily.the visual part left much to be desired.Hope and friends were before the cameras during the show Sunday night The tape was edited to be broadcast less than 24 hours later It was pretty ragged The comedian walked onto the stage with a lot of jokes about the city’s strike of sanitation workers—which to New York were like Hope's smog jokes when he is in Los Angeles and his jokes about military life when he is in Vietnam—more amusing to the folks on the scene than in other places.CARDS VISIBLE Bing Crosby and Hope predictably insulted each other with good humor—and some of the time their printed cue cards were highly visible to the TV audience.Barbara Eden and some chorus boys had a song and-dance number that was pretty difficult to handle—Miss Eden had to change costume in front of the audience since there was no place to hide. Most awkward of all was the fact that all performers, trying to reach the live audience seated around them, circled the platform trailing microphone wires, like restless creatures on long leashes Much of the time their backs were to the cameras. The show concluded with a long and unfunny boxing match between Rocky Marciano and Hope—it never came off at all.Immediately following that special, Andy Williams popped onto the NBC screen presiding over an awards ceremony—the Golden Globes of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association— from the grand ballroom of a West Coast hotel. The facilities, while far from perfect, were a little better for television. There were a large number of awards, and while handled in the classic manner of the Oscars, it went rather fast.Since most of the fun for the audience in an awards show is looking at the celeorities, it was a little disappointing that so few of the winners were present to pick up their trophies.UNIFORMS BY WHITE application Decision by the federal government to implement national medicare July 1, as announced by Prime Minister Pearson in the Mouse of Commons Monday, despite the reluctance of most provinces to enter the plan at the present time is merely a confirmation of what most people have expected. The Prime Minister has been one of the leading exponents of the plan and it was never considered seriously that he would do anything to defer application of the legislation that has been approved by Parliament. In announcing the decision of the cabinet, Mr.Pearson indicated that the introduction of medicare would have little effect on the federal finances for the time being at least because only two of the provinces — Saskatchewan and British Columbia — are prepared to adopt the scheme in the near future and thus the federal outlays would be limited. But, by inference, the Prime Minister gave little or no hope that this situation would prevail for long.In fact, during an interview outside the House, he expressed the hope and the belief that the experience of earlier projects would be repeated, that circumstances would force the other provinces into the plan without great delay. Here he supports, perhaps unconsciously, the objections being registered by many provincial administrations against the federal government attitude on cost-sharing programs in the past.Too often Ottawa has decided that this or that program would be for the general interest of the nation and has announced that it would assist the provinces to finance the scheme.Provinces opting out would soon find themselves in an unenviable position.Through federal tax levies, their citizens would be forced to contribute to the benefits being received by the residents of other provinces without getting anything in return. Thus the dissenters would be forced to go along with the idea in self-protection even if they felt the provincial revenues could be put to better use elsewhere.Where opposition came from one of two provinces perhaps this idea could be justified but with eight of ten provincial premiers feeling the idea premature,' charges that Ottawa is using the big stick appear jusified.Pay attention to details. The poor things are absolutely ignored most of the time. Now it's round smoke If a Boston physicist has his way, industrial plant chimneys will be forever blowing smoke rings.According to a report prepared for Canadian Industries, Ltd., Dr.Timothy Fohl declares that chimneys blow smoke rings would pollute the air less than those streaming out the usual plume.Because smoke rings have a more stable shape, they could penetrate inversion layers that hold ordinary smoke near the ground.Dr.Fohl’s calculations indicate that even with a 300-metre stack, about 984 feet, smoke plumes could rise no higher than 750 metres, HANOI SAYS REDS CONTROL CITIES - TW» radlsphof* from VNA Homo, tho North Viofnomoto now* agency wo» monltorod in Wortow.Tho caption for tho
