Record Staff Reporter Dick Nutbrown are seen here as their "Miles for Millions" trek proceeded down Hie Stanstead Highway Saturday.Lynne intends to walk again in the fall from Stanstead to Magog and this time more enthusiasts are welcomed to stride for Oxfam.(Record photo: Gerry Lemayl Trek for Oxfam a success By RICHARD NUTBROWN (Whose legs At 8:10 Saturday evening a troupe of haggard, • thirsty, worn-out "striders for Oxfam'' arrived in the familiar, much-welcomed confines of She r-brooke, a paradise of neon lights after their 34-mile trek from Stanstead.Lynne White, a 17-year-old girl with a lot more spunk and stamina than her counterparts, including this crippled reporter, organized the walkathon to promote Oxfam, a charity organization whose funds are us£d for famine relief.Lynne’s walk plan, covering four miles per hour with certain short breaks for rest, was followed almost to a tee, at least the pace you might say.was followed. But when it came to rest periods a lot of persuasion was needed to lift my tired muscles and Lynne was the persuasion. Here's what happened following our departure from Stanstead College at 8:45 a.m.Saturday.The walk from the college to the Stanstead Highway, Route 5, was in itself a nice jaunt but hitting the highway an ugly green sign caught my attention, Sherbrooke 33 miles.Undaunted, I proceeded down the road right behind Lynne’s heels, something I would fail to do two hours later. It was a cool, cloudy morning, somewhat perfect for those who enjoy this type of extracurricular torture.Chatting with Lynne she told me this would be her longest walk yet.having only completed such short distances as 20, 25 and 27 mile hikes. An omen of what was ahead then appeared. No more than five minutes on the highway but an old 52 model hearse putted by At this point I was gingerly high - stepping along, reflexes alert and awake in the cool, brisk breeze.Geography then became the problem. The slow long trek up Duf-ferin Heights was the turning point for this “fella”.Peeping occasionally from around the clouds.Sol added a little rejuvenation to my bones as we descended the hill.Feet still intact, brow spotted with sweat and wrung with combined frustration and anger, we then stopped for our first rest The first stop was short but it gave us a chance to find out a little about each other.Explaining in simple words her purpose for the walk, Lynne said, “I want to lose weight and maybe the pounds I lose might be added to someone.somewhere who needs them.” Bouncing back up on her feet, “let's go,” came the command “We’ll stop again to rest at the Ayer’s Cliff turn-off,” she said.At this point we were approximately 10 miles from there. Was I glad to see Lynne’s mother less than an hour later when she stopped with a libation for my dry lips. The pleasure I then felt was subdued when about two hours later we passed the Ayer’s Cliff resting point without so much as a 10 second let-up.are still sore) Meanwhile I had made short order of the meagre rations intended to carry us for the day.We walked and walked and walked finally reaching Massa-wippi, the mid-point of our journey. Here again we rested Eighteen miles yet to go before reaching Sherbrooke and 1 was ready to throw in the towel, game over, fini.My feet ached, my head ach ed and the radio forecasted rain showers.Lynne, persistent in her quest to finish the walk, gave us a little time to rest, a little more than her schedule would ever have allotted for.A few miles up the road we were jointed by a fellow worker and his friend, and shortly after four Sherbrooke students, bringing the walkathon party to ten persons.Four people started out on the original trek.Pleased by the added company and rallied on by the new, faster pace, the miles began creeping by one by one.At this period I was unconscious of everything but the sight of a billboard welcoming approaching traffic (I doubt if many people walk from Stanstead to Sherbrooke in the run of a year l to some hotel or motel a number of miles away. Each time I read a sign I knew Sherbrooke was closer. The quick pace set by the welcomed newcomers soon slackened but Lynne carried on.slowly but ever so visibly moving ahead of her haggard followers.Rest periods became more frequent and even Lynne began showing signs of exhaustion although not so visible as the ones so poignant on my face.Only 10 miles to go and the right to say “I made it” was all that mattered.Stopping for supper just outside of Lennoxville, we rested again for a good length of time.In Lennoxville, people who had been waiting, congratulated us, but offers of rides to Sherbrooke fell on deaf ears. There was no way a ride could be accepted from here on in.Then suddenly it was over The neon lights looked beautiful, and the stretched weary muscles knew infinite rest was to come.Lynne, overjoyed at her accomplishment, thanked every-for their participation.Live on radio she asked people to help her.aid Oxfam by sending any donations to her, R.R.I Tomifobia, or by telephoning her for information ai 876-2417.She later said in October she intends to walk from Stanstead to Magog for the same cause. One of the brighter notes of the walk was the generosity by B Morin of Equipment B Morin Inc.of Lennoxville who kindly donated $10 to Lynne and provided her weary partners with refreshments.Over the telephone yesterday Lynne said she received a total of $44.50 wjth still a few more sponsors yet to pay.She again asked for financial help from area citizens to keep this organization relatively new to Canada, going.Canadians march for In cities, towns, villages, along country roads and highways, over hills and through valleys, Canadians from all walks of life marched Saturday for charity.Federal cabinet ministers, a provincial premier, businessmen, students, celebrities and the handicapped were among thousands from eight to 80 who took part in the annual March for Millions.A survey by The Canadian Press showed that more than 70.000 persons marched for seven charities who hope to raise at least $1.500.000 for fa-mile relief around the world. An estimated 32.000 finished their walks, covering more than 649.000 miles along routes totalling about 250 mile .They weren't alone. For every marcher there was one or more well-intentioned stay-at-home who pledged anything from a few cents to several dollars for each mile covered Among the oldest to finish was an 80-year-old man from Collingwood.Ont., who walked 20 miles with the youngest marcher, his eight-year-old granddaughter Most walked, but others ran.One person from Vancouver used stilts while students from the Chatham, Ont.area earned a bed and pushed two motorless cars.Sixty-seven-year-old Premier J R Smallwood of Newfoundland led the march in Eastern Canada, finishing a 25-mile walk in St.John's.Mr.Smallwood, among 10,000 that set out, was the first of 8.-000 who finished, and then added an extra mile to claim honors over the province’s Op-posit.on Leader Gerald Otten-heimer.In Montreal, 700 of 1,500 who started a 28-mile jaunt around He Jesus, situated between the city and the northern mainland of suburban Laval, finished the course to earn $25,000.Laval Mayor Jacques Te-treault began the march but was soon outdistanced by Les Brooks, who for the second year in a row arrived first in six hours and 20 minutes. In Western Canada, William Hamilton, a cripple from Wetas-kiwin.Alta., Lt.- singer Eartha Kitt, Alderman Ed Sweeny and Bud Peters on 20-inch stilts.TREK WAS ROUGH About 700 of almost 1.000 starters completed the 27-mile course from Trail, B.C., to Fruitville and back despite rough, mountainous terrain. The elder of the finishers was Russ Elliott, 77, from Trail. He was accompanied on the first mile by Canada's ski star, Nancy Greene, who then dashed for a plane to make a Toronto appointment.Winnipeg plans a walkathon next Saturday and Calgary later this month.Ontano was the walkingest province Of the estimated 25,000 who started walking Saturday morning at Toronto, 8,000 finished the 32-mile route around the city, some late Saturday night.External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp walked 2'2 miles to the first Toronto checkpoint, then dropped out.Donald S.MacDonald, federal minister without portfolio who also participated, was backed by Prime Ministtr Trudeau and other colleagues who each put up 10 cents for every mile he walked at French ministry PARIS (Reuters) The chief North Vietnamese and United States envoys to France called separately today at the French foreign m i n i s t r y to consult about the location for Vietnam peace talks in the Paris area The North Vietnamese delegate general, Mai Van Bo, and U S Charge d'Affaires Woodruff Wallner both saw Herve Al-phand.secretary general of the ministry Alphand, the ministry's senior permanent official, informed the two diplomats of possible premises in and around the OTTAWA — (CP) - Prime Minister Trudeau has hedged so far on the challenge by Conservative Leader Stanfield to debate the issues of the June 25 election on television. It may be wise for Mr Trudeau to avoid the confrontation altogether, not because he might lose the debate, but because Mr.Stanfield probably has the most to gain.Mr.Trudeau probably has more drawing power at the moment than either Mr.Stanfield or NDP Leader Douglas, who could also be included in the debate if it ever comes. The prime minister's drawing power arises from his high office and from the publicity he French capital for their preliminary talks, French sources said.No details have been given so far of the centres under consideration The choice seems to be between a number of chateaux outside the capital and two or three conference halls in Paris. The French government today is expected to submit a list of possible sites which P S and North Vietnamese diplomats will present to their governments for a decision. On one hand there are prob- has received in his just-completed march to the Liberal leadership. The argument is therefore that by debating with Mr Stanfield and Mr.Douglas, Mr Trudeau provides them with an audience they may not be able to get on their own If Mr.Trudeau's people also feel their man is running ahead of Mr Stanfield in popularity, then it would be similarly unwise to provide Mr Stanfield with this publicity opportunity.Balanced against this view is the knowledge that Mr.Trudeau is a skilled debater, in both English and French. As a result he stands an excellent chance of improving his public cation and ability to house officials accompanying delegations This eliminates some of the country chateaux On the other hand.Paris police are not anxious to have to face more demonstrators while occupied with Sorbonne University students who protested police harshness in clashes Fri day.In the capital itself, best pros pects appear to be the French foreign ministry's international conference centre, near the Arc de Triomphe, and the Palais Rose, which is sometimes used debate image at the expense of the others. But television is a tricky medium.Even though Mr.Trudeau is suited to it and might score better on debating points, this does not mean he automatically wins the debate in the minds of the public.Nobody can say how the public will react to any confrontation of this type It is the feeling they are left with that counts.Further, Mr.Trudeau would surely suffer from the inhibitions of holding office in what he could say on policy. Some things cannot be revealed because they are not in the public interest.lems of fast and easy commum- Trudeau shy on Baby receives thymus.transplant saves life ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.(AP) — The first known successful human transplant of the thymus, a small, mysterious gland like organ that helps in building the body's resistance to disease, was reported today by a Florida doctor. The thymus was implanted into the body of a seven-months-old boy, born without the organ and given little chance for survival.“At 18 months of age, the infant is growing normally arid has no unusual infections,” said Dr.William W.Cleveland, an endocrinologist and professor of pediatrics at the University of Miami School of Medicine Cleveland said in an interview that the success of the operation lends strong support to the immunologic functions of the thymus that so far have been based on animal studies. He reported in a paper prepared for the annual meeting of the American Society for Clinical Investigation that the infant showed poor immunologic reaction before the operation.Almost immediately afterward his immunologic responses im- proved, the doctor said THYMUS DISAPPEARS The thymus is found in the upper chest near the base of the neck in children It disappears or stops functioning in adults with no ill effects.T h e operation, performed May 24, 1967, involved pediatric physicians at the University of Miami medical school and a London pathologist.Cleveland said the donor thymus was taken from a 13-week female fetus in London and flown to Miami in a cold saline solution to keep it viable.Troops tangle in a cemetery SAIGON (AF) — South Vietnamese troops battled the Viet Cong in a cemetery alongside Saigon’s airport bombarded South Vietnamese troops with mortars and rockets as the government soldiers advanced through the old French military cemetery on the edge of Saigon's Tan Son Nhut air base. One rocket killed Col.Luu Kin Cuong.the base commander, who went out to observe South Vietnamese air strikes.A senior U.S.officer said there appeared to be a Viet Cong battalion in the cemetery area.He said he could not estimate the total number of Viet Cong troops in Saigon, but it was small compared with the 15,000 sent into the capital in the Tet assault. Some of the guerrillas were fighting from stilt houses along the Saigon River, on the northern edge of the capital, and black smoke from burning shanties rose thousands of feet.Tan Son Nhut itself was shelled, and a South Vietnamese military spokesman
