confirmed, Tim Hardin will be appearing on Bishop’s stage Those who have never heard of Tim Hardin by name will have heard of him by his songs, especially “If I were a Carpenter” and “Lady from Baltimore”.And those who have never heard his songs (which are usually sung by someone else) have missed some of the best writing of our times. Those who have never heard Tim Hardin sing his songs have missed something which is all too rare in contemporary music — an extremely competent performance by someone whose music is so personal that it seems to be a part of him.Tim Hardin bares his soul to his listeners during a performance. His songs are autobiographical in tone girls he has loved, things he has done, places he has been His career has been a hard climb to the success he enjoys today. An exmarine, he spent a few years after getting out playing for small audiences in Boston coffeehouses and elsewhere.Although popular with connoseurs of folk music, he remained unknown to the rest of the musical world. He sprang to fame as other artists sang and popularized his songs. This situation must have been very galling indeed, considering the personal nature of his songs.Like Lightfoot, who also built up a reputation as a songwriter of songs for other people before blossoming on his own, Hardin finally began to be regarded as a folksinger in his own right His three or four albums shows a steady improvement of performance, but not of material, for his songs unlike Lightfoot’s cannot be placed in different periods.Hardin can be compared with Canada’s Pride insofar as they had similar beginnings, are both backed up by electric musicians, and both sing songs of a personal nature But Hardin’s songs are treated by him in a way that the listener knows he wrote them all, and the listener knows he is singing about himself, while Lightfoot’s cavalier attitude towards most of his work precludes any such feelings Basically however, if you enjoy Lightfoot, you will enjoy Hardin.Hardin will appear in concert at Bishop’s University in the Centennial Theatre on April 6 The price is ridiculously low — $:t 00 Beebe could do was tie 2-2 and Russia got the gold by a single point, and the Czechs the silver.Canada the bronze. This year, the tournament was staged as a double roundrobin for the first time, with six countries instead of eight as in past tournaments.Thirty games were played over a period of 16 days, and at the end there still wasn’t a clear points winner. The Russians defeated Sweden twice 4-2 and 3-2.The Swedes took the Czechs twice 2-0 and 1-0 and the Czechs made it three straight over Russia since the 1967 tournament with 2-0 and 4-3 w ins here While the Russians thanked Sweden for its efforts, the Swedes were pulling for Canada to gain at least a tie against Russia Sunday night.A tie would have given Sweden the gold medal. With one less point, Russia would have been out of title contention. In the event of two-way ties, the winner of both games between the tied clubs is placed ahead. That would have been Sweden.Bill Heindl scored on a pass from Roger Bourbonnais to put Canada ahead early in the first period Igor Rornishevsky beat goalie Wayne Stephenson from 30 feet late in the period tying the same.Boris M.khailov drilled .iher cleanly through Stephenson early in the second period and it was 2-1 for Russia.SHOWED BEST FORM The game could have gone either way as the young Canadian team displayed its best form of the tournament. Then two goals within 75 seconds in the third period swung it to Russia 4-1.Alexander Maltsev’s shot slid off Stephenson’s stick into the net and Mikhailov followed with his second goal.Ab DeMarco blasted Canada's second goal points—eight.Canada outshot Russia 16-10 in the first period but for the game the Soviet team was ahead 38-32.Canadian coach Jackie Mc- Leod said it was a “toss-up” between Ken Dryden
