extolled the present Governor-General’s tact and diginity, his broad and vigilant Canadianism, his support of good causes, the high intellectual level from which he spoke.Other newspapers agreed the attack was in poor taste.They spoke of Mr.Massey’s record as one of the most distinguished and useful Canadians of the time.The intellectual Mr.Massey is a man who might have taken life easily.Instead, he preferred to devote his talents to the public service.He representd his country in Britain for years in a poised and capable manner that did no harm to the status of the Dominion.If he has seemed at all remote as a Governor-General does not the very nature of the office call for no less than a suitable remoteness?The appointment of a Canadian Governor - General was greeted by many, in the first place, as the Ottawa Journal has pointed out, “with something short of enthusiasm.” Mr.Massey’s handling of the role lias won some of these doubters over.We are in favor of the Commonwealth connection, let us make this plain, and not solely as a matter of habit.Wc feel, putting it simply, that the members of a family should stick together irrespective of miles and varying conditions.We do not agree that the freely-accepted status of subjects of a Throne implies a measure of subservience, as same of our American cousins would have us believe.It remains our feeling, despite Mr.Massey’s success, that a Governor-General, representing the Queen, should come from the home country of that Queen.A Briton, from the British home islands, appears to be in the best position to represent the Sovereign.He is not a member of a Dominion's immediate family; habituated to routine and a cer-j tain style of thinking; they are not accustomed to making quick decisions, hence the delays char-; acteristic of official action.I fully agree wtih the government’s decision to create the posi-: lion of parliamentary assistants.: The leader of the Opposition did not share the views of the Prime ’ Minister—that, of course, is his | right as Opposition chief.| In order that parliamentary assistants may give their respective ministers the co-operation and counsel to enable them to efficiently administer their departments, I respectfully suggest that these assistants should have a knowledge of business and how it is conducted from the industrial, commercial and financial standpoints.If these parliamentary assistants do not possess this experience because of training in another profession or calling, they should take steps to acquire it by taking a course at one of our universities and likewise attend as often as possible, conventions and conferences of businessmen; they would thus learn at first hand the trials and tribulations of the average businessman; who has to find the money: organize the enterprise; engage the employees or staff; get.the business; merit competition, local and foreign: pay the taxes levied upon him and meet his payroll; these are conditions of which the average parliamentarian and civil ! servant have little knowledge and less experience; yet, one or the other can dictate to the busi-i nessman.In addressing the Restrictive ! Trade Practices Commission on September 12 last, I stated in clear and positive terms there were too many lawyers in Parliament and that more members and civil servants with business experience were needed if business was to get a sympathetic hearing and government co-operation in the solving of its prob- lems.It on this occasion I spoke with a degree of confidence it was because of my experience as a businessman for more than a quarter of a century.Sentiments similar to those expressed in this communication were uttered by President Calder of the Canadian Manufacturers Association at the dinner meeting of the Hamilton-Brantford Branch on November 25 last.It is (he businessman, his cooperation with labor and management that produce the wealth, so large a share of which supports our governments.Hence, businessmen should be oftener consulted and their recommendations implemented by necessary legislation or changes in administration.Prime Minister Duplessis has throughout his public career been sympathetic to the fair businessman as he has to decent organized labor.I can well understand that the heads of our government should be able lawyers, but their colleagues should have a wider knowledge of business and industrial organization.Industry, management and labour are the real builders of our province and nation.Where a province has Sio understanding and co-operative a Prime Minister as Qubec fortunately has, stability and security are assured.I fully endorse the government’s action in appointing parliamentary assistants and trust that following their appointment they will take steps to make themselves acquainted with modern business trends.Wc have been told we need Bygone Days TWENTY YEARS AGO From the Record of FrL Dec.14, 1934 Belgium, following G»—' Britain, has officially fold the United State* that it will make no payment on its war debt installment duê Satur day.A note to the U.S.said the country “finds itself unable” to make payment.Alger Hiss, munitions investigator for the U.S.Senate committee, planned today to stress the contention that the Du Ponts Powder Company bargained with the government for months during the Great War over the construction of a powder plant .which after it had been built—at government expense —made over $2,000,000 in a few weeks.Thomas L.Richard, commissioner of patents died in Ottawa today after five months of illness.He was born in Wotton, Que.TEN YEARS AGO From the Record of Wed.Dec.14, 1944 King George VI celebrates his 49th birthday today.Joseph Marier, of Drum-mondvillc, has been appoint ed Judge of the Magistrates Court, Premier Duplessis announced last night.Twenty-four cases of scarlet fever and four of diphtheria are reported in local hospitals.Montreal’s Johnny Greco is scheduled to meet Bobby Rif-fin in Madison Square Garden tomorrow night.The ten-round bout is a rematch of the two fighters.Greco won by a decision in the first fight Nov.17.Questions and Answers Q—What is a dik-dik?A—One of the smallest ruminants known.The dik-dik ii an antelope that stands only 14 or 15 inches high at the shoulder, and is a native of Africa.* * * Q—What was the first submarine in the United States Navy"’ A—The Holland, invented by John P.Holland.* * * Q—For how long will Polaris | remain the pole star?A—For centuries more.It is estimated that about 2,000 years Î from now the star Gamma Cephei 1 will be the pole star for people : on earth.« * * Q—How high can a grasshop-per jump?A—A grasshopper has jumped 116 feet 8 inches, more than 100 times its own length.j less government in business and I more business in government.;
