landing will go to a suburban Longueuil machine shop superintendent who built the landing gear for the lunar module that will carry two American astronauts to the moon’s surface He is Fernand Michon.who says, “I just did my job and.besides.I ve had to work on much tougher assign ments in the past.'’ Jesse Turner, president of the Longueuil firm-Heroux Machine Shops—said One of the reasons we were awarded the contract bv Grumman Ltd is because Mr Michon PLAYING WITH MUSCLE- SHOCK: ST.JACQUES hollers let hi This is just the beginning of a most unusual robbery! devised a special tool to make the lunar module's four legs ” The Longueuil company competed against eight com panies in the United States for the contract.“We were the only ones able to make the landing gear to their specifications,’’ Mr Turner said The four legs, made of an aluminum magnesium alloy, are 12 feet long and weigh 14 pounds each Mr Turner said the problem in making the legs is they are empty cylinders with walls less than one eighth of an inch thick and have grooves of varying thickness at either end In making these grooves, many potential manufac turers found that the cylinder collapsed and assumed an oval shape Mr Turner said What we needed was a machine that could gauge out the inside of a block of metal while putting grooves on the outside This is where Mr Michon came into the picture I bought an old lathe and got to work with some equip ment we had at the plant.' he said After 2*2 months, Mr Michon had manufactured an instrument capable of producing the legs Supporting struts and other parts of the landing gear were easier to make, since the company has been in the undercarriage business for 27 years MOVING MEMORIES It s lik.moving my p;t l |)av« Geographv School at Sunstead College are presenting Wednesday night lectures open to the public at the Haskell Opera House on the Boundary The first lecture of the evening of July 9 was by Professor J Brian Bird Chairman of the Department of Geography at McGill University He was introduced by the Summer School director Professor T Hills Dr Hills, in his opening remarks extended a welcome to the large number of area persons attending He made mention that Dr Bird was here for the first time in 1951 He further noted that students will be work ing in the local areas as they study landscape and gain geographical knowledge asking for the cooperation of the public as they ask questions Dr Hills brought news and greetings of professors known to many here from previous years at the Summer School He further invited friends to come to the College Pierce Hall each Tuesday evening for films, noting fil ns are also arranged for younger people on Eskimo life Dr Bird's topic was India — A Non-Existent Nation Dr Bird was in India in November and December of 1968 to attend a geographic conference and at this lecture gave his impressions of that country He said that life has become more complimented since he first came to Stanstead with the Summer School He mentioned that the 1968 conference in India which meets every four years was the first to be held outside of Europe He said that the people of India gave them a very interesting tour of their country familiar to geographers Dr Bird said his impressions were of an incredible contrast by great poverty and great wealth He noted about 80 per cent of the population live in rural areas, small villages, the remainder in cities The population is increasing rapidly with a pro- jective increase by 1966 expected By slide illustrations, Dr Bird showed and told about the countrv and field excursion^ .«round IVhli the South ern cultures, with broad flat clay land The government garden* and building* and slides of the Northern section Dr Bird viid November and December are fine months to be in India with day temperatures at TV and nights about 50 This i> great contrast to the Mon soon periods of rain He noted that todav IVhli is two cities of two centuries The new 20th century and the 18 19th centuries and others before this period and the 18th century when the British came One slide showed the skill of early people s carving of figures in stone believed to be done about 8 AD There is a section of Old IVhli in rums but not occupied and another of Old Dehli which is occupied India had a period of sophisicated society with the last of the Noble Emperors in 1783 The slide* showed many of these early structures, some in rums India has industrial capacity he said He referred to the deviation of the late years, in 1947 48 when the British Government mostly withdrew buildings are fa mous in India and the World, modes of travel of crops, mainly ne'e grown and the water storage m rural areas, for he said, water is of great importance for the spiritual and economic life of India English is the standard language although there are tongues of India The forecast is that India will have a good tourist in dustry within a short time as there are Indian* visiting ruins and historic places now as tourists and people of other countries are becoming more and more inter ested Dr Travor
