Tomorrow Whether They Will Quit Health Service American Artillery Pounds Massed Communist Units Bv OLEN CLEMENTS Tokyo, March 28 —-(/P)— American artillery today poured heavy fire into massed communist units on the rain-swept central Korean front. The aim appeared to be twofold: To clear the w-ay for advancing allied infantry near the North Korean border, and to stall any Red attempt at a counter-offen-sive.On the east coast, South Korean troops advanced behind a rolling barrage of naval gunfire to a point six miles north of parallel 38.They occupied Yangyang, first major coast town north of the border.South Korean forces have occupied one border village and four North Korean towns since their drive began Sunday. On the western front, allied forces north of Seoul pushed within seven miles of 38.They had full control of the road leading northwest from allicd-held Uijongbu to Munaan.Spring rains hampered the.allied air attack and in places bogged down their mechanized ground forces. The centre of communist troop-massing activity was the central front, north of Chunehon.AP cor-respondent William C.Barnard said 10,006 Reds were strung along the border and held a thin slice of land to the south, Another 80,000 were backed up a* far as the big communist supply bate at Kumhwa, 20 miles inside Red Korea.Front-line observers watched for any sign of a Feed push down the centre of the peninsula. If the communists counter-attack they may choose this rainy season as jumping-off time.Their lightly weighted forces would have some advantage over the more-heavily-burdened United Nations troops.Elements of five regrouping Chinese armies and one North Korean army face the allies in this central sector. It was the forward wall of this force that was hit by American guns. The artillery, hub-deep in sticky mud, opened up after probing U.N.patrols drew heavy fire. The thundering barrage cut up one Red front-line division Tuesday night.Surviving communists withdrew rather than take further punishment.Fighter-bombers of three countries swept out of the rain to add their bombs, rockets and machine-gun fire to the blazing attack.American, Australian and South African pilots joined in pounding communist positions. On the western front, tough Puerto Rican troops smashed a Red ammunition dump northeast of Uijomgbu.Americans north of Uijongbu Tuesday night beat off a minor attack.Red mortar and artillery shell* lauded in some allied sectors.American patrols entered Chan-go, northeast of Uijongbu, and then withdrew.Artillery was called down to break up a communist attack east of the Change road. The bad weather Wednesday failed to stop allied bombers.B-29s hit two airfields and a troop replacement centre. The election returns were un-f usually fast in coming in, the count being completed by 7.20 p.m., barely twenty minutes after the polls closed. The reports of the Deputy Returning Officers were telephoned to City Clerk Antonin Deslauriers and his assistants at the City Hall. The first returns gave Mr.Boulanger a substantial load but this was wiped out when the reports were received from the King Street West polls and Air.Leclerc for a few minutes held a slight majority.Mr.Boulanger’s lead was restored when the Ontario and Dominion street results were turned in.Although this was the first aldermanic campaign in the North Ward, it lacked few of those practices which are supposed to lend color to voting.Several cases of attempted “telegraphing” were uncovered and a survey indicates that every one of the eleven polls had one or more attempts at impersonation.Challenges were frequent as the agents for the candidates sought to halt persons believed willing to pass as somebody else for the benefit of the opposing faction. In one poll, the impersonation efforts reached such a point that a police detail had to be despatched to restore order. However, no actual arrests were made. The official count of the ballots was made at the City Hall at ten o’clock this morning by City Clerk Deslauriers.•Following the election.Mr.Boulanger broadcast a message of thanks to his supporters. He said: My first desire is to thank you, the electors of the North Ward, for the honor you have done me by electing me to the City Council as an alderman for your ward.It is an honor 1 deeply appreciate and I will do everything in my power to justify the faith you have placed in me.1 know that I cannot carry out those projects which arc so close to my heart without the co-operation of those men who .ire already sitting at the City Hall and without your continued support and perhaps, at times, your criticism. After all, I am only human and am bound to make some mistakes.1 hope these will not be.too serious and that with your advice and suggestions I will be able to avoid those pitfalls which too often cause trouble for an a.dennan, especially when he is a newcomer to the halls of government.1 will renew my pledge to work for town planning, unproved parks and playgrounds and providing our citizens with a safer and more adequate supply of drinking water. These cannot be achieved over, night, but I hope to report substantial progress when 1 come up for re-election.I wish to extend my personal thanks to my opponent, Mr.Paul Leclerc, for the square manner in which he conducted his fight. In closing, 1 also wish to thank my supporters whose efforts were largely responsible for m^ election.1 also wish to thank the Sher-broke Record.La Tribune, and radio stations C.M.L.T.and C.K.T.S.for the coverage they gave my campaign.Aleutians May Be Site Of A-Tests By ELTON C.FAY Washington, March 28—i(/P)— The United States may be preparing its fifth atomic-weapons proving ground, this one in a sub-Arctic wasteland.A lonely spot on the Aleutian island chain, which stretches out.800 miles from the Alaskan mainland westward towards Russia’s Siberian empire, appears a probable choice. There, for the first time, the United States could test atomic bombs under conditions of climate and other factors which might be encountered should a war require use of such weapons against Russian cities.Since Gordon Dean, Atomic Energy Commission chairman, hinted recently that new tests might be made at locations not used heretofore, there has been developing speculation that the performance given in Lawrence School auditorium last evening, Joan Glithero is a name which may well reach the top among the stars of the future. The 11-year-old pianist, native of Montreal, revealed great potentialities, a sensitivity and musical taste well beyond her years. One had the impression, before meeting her even, that she lives and breithes music, that it is her whole world. If any fault might be found with her recital last night, it is that it was all too brief, and we are willing to wager that the remainder of the audience shared our feeling.Bach }s always the reliable program opener and the Prelude and Fugue in C minor showed the careful training and sound technique of the young pianist. She admits a particular fondness for Beethoven whicih was quite evident in her fine interpretation of the first two movements of the Sonate Pathétique. In fact in this work particularly she showed a maturity of style not usually associated with one of such tender age.I News Briefs answer two false alarms, the HMJt and Uth since the beginning of the month and Unlay Director Percy Donahue issued a statement in which he warned against the danger of such a practice.“A false alarm may cost a life and the sounder, if apprehended, would face a serious charge,” Chief Donahue said.“During the months of February and March 40 new fire alarm boxes w'ero installed throughout the city to replace old type five alarm boxes in order to improve the five protection.” The Chief said that most of the false alarms turned in this month have come front the new boxes."There is no need to send a false alarm to find out.if the boxes are in good condition," he said, “because these boxes have been approved by tho proper authorities and were inspected and tested before being put into service. They are reliable and ready to transmit, Of False Alarms real fire alarms and axe instsllsd for that, purpose only."False slants answered by tb# fire department are txoublesome. They cause unnecessary running of the fire apparatus, not only reducing the length of service of the equipment but also threatening danger to persons on the street.False alarms expose the equipment to accidents and lesson protection should there be a I'eal fire while the equipment is out of the> stations, "As some of the false alarms have been turned in by children, 1 w ish to recommend to school principals that they point out to their pupils the seriousness of these alarms.1 also wish to oall the attention of the Ixiys who are members of the Junior Fire Prevention Brigade to their agreement to report, to the fire department any information regarding persons who turn in false alarms, so that these persons may be brought before the court where they will be jailed, fined or both.” Farm Course As Richmond Is Concluded Richmond, March 28 - The course on farm management, put on under the direction of the Eastern Townships committee for adult, education and the Garthby came back and copped the second match and then Parr’s squad forged ahead in the third tiff to lead the series 2-1.Garthby staged a real rally to take the fourth game in a hard-fought contest, which was the best one of the series, to knot the series at two games each. The teams have played good hard hockey with plenty of speed thrown in and the fans have had, in our estimation, more than their share of action and thrills in witnessing the games and tomorrow’s tilt should be no exception. So if you wish to see a good game, and one of the final ones at the local Arena, then take in the game tomorrow and we figure you will more than enjoy yourself.* * * The annual figure skating show of the Sherbrooke Winter Club will take place at the Arena this Saturday. The show is staged by the members of the club and they have in the past put on some very good performances and this year’s should be no exception, The members have been working hard the last few weeks and should come up with one of the best ever to' be staged by the club. The kiddies will put on their own act and the senior members of the club will stage the special acts on the parade.* * * Harry boys, don’t forget tomorrow evening at the Y.* * * The Athletics have signed another player, in fact, two, in the persons of Gary Rutkay and Earle MacDonald.Rutkay performed last year with St.Johns while MacDonald played some with St.Hyacinthe and Sherbrooke.Rutkay played second base for the Braves last year and was the top man in the runs batted in department on Steve Mizerak’s club.keystone sack, last year, was a big factor in the Braves defensive system and his addition to Sherbrooke will be a big help.* * * The sport writers of Ottawa couldn’t get over the Senators defeat at the hands of Quebec. The Aces wrapped up the series in four straight, and without very much effort- at that.It looks as though the series with the Sherbrooke Saints took too much out of the Senators and paved the way for an easy victory for the Aces.We think the big trouble was that the Senators’ age caught up with them. After all, when you get over the thirty-mark the going gets a little tough in present day hoc-| key.Bumps take a little longer to get over and the season was pretty long.* * * Maurice "The Rocket." Richard pulled' one out of the fire last night for Canadiens when he tallied the winning marker after 61 minutes of overtime to give Frank Seiko's team the lead in the semi-finals with Detroit. After listening to part of the game and reading the report we think that the major share of the win should go to little Gerry McNeil who played an' outstanding game to keep his mates in the running. He handled some pretty tough ones but always came through with a nice effort. No doubt Dick Irwin must be smiling to-day after last night’s victory and especially after having been rated so low in the pre-game betting. It would seem that according to the reports Canadiens had a poor chance of taking a game in the series, but anyway they copped the first one to throw the race wide open.It looks as though it could develop into a fight right down to the wive.* * * Overtime seems to be the topic and the Braves and Aces staged their own little party in Valleyfield last night.Toe Blake’s squad came through with the tilt in the second overtime period when Larry Kwong registered the winning marker after eight minutes of play. This series may develop into a real close affair before a winner is declared if the first game is any indication of what the
