and of HMCS Magnificent (aircraft carrier — Commodore K.F.Adams, Victoria) accompanied by the Micmac (destroyer — Lieut.-Cdr.F.C.Frewar, Halifax) to the Mediterranean for exercises August 7—October 24.The training value gained from these two cruises alone ranged from the elementary training of young seamen to advanced anti-submarine exercises, witu naval aircraft occupying a position of high nrominence in conditions closely approximating those of actual combat. The 10,000-ton Ontario visited such places as .Pearl Harbor, Pago Pago in the Samoan Islands, Suva in the Fiji group, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, Hobart in Tasmania, Milford Sound, Lyttleton, Wellington and Auckland in New Zealand.Manoeuvres with naval units of the United Kingdom, Australia and Pakistan were carried out off the Australian coast. In addition to the Ontario's regular ship’s company, a number of junior officers and ordinary seamen were aboard for sea training, as well as personnel of the RCN (Reserve) from the naval divisions across Canada. The Autumn cruise of the Magnificent and the Micmae—with the 30th Carrier Air Group (Lieut.-Cdr.R.L.Bartlett, Fort Qu’Appelle,^Sask.) embarked in the for ft a leHtho tCuiii mè:"Xâ A TURKEY BEE — Farmer Eugene Constantin of St.Augustin, Que., stands before several thousand dollars worth of Christmas dinners. To add to his happiness the tedious job of plucking the big turkeys was done free by 42 residents of the Portneuf county village near Quebec city. While the volunteers plucked the 500 birds in a nine-hour stretch Constantin saw to it they had plenty to eat.The custom of helping the farmer is an old one in this district and provides a pleasant get-together. (CP Photo) similar period since the ship was commissioned.During the cruise there was a minor outbreak of poliomyelitis aboard the Magnificent. All cases were, however, mild.Of the seven men affected five were back on full-time duty within one month, and the other two were already carrying out light duties by the end or the cruise. The treatment was prompt, and quarantine measures were instituted without delay. The “ambassadorial” aspect of this cruise was marked by visits to Naples, Italy, and Golfe Juan, France; and was fortified by the warmth of courtesies exchanged and good reports on behavior of Canadian sailors ashore received from all authorities concerned.Training afloat generally was maintained at a vigorous pace Crusader embarked the Royal Couple at Vancouver, October 21, and took them to Victoria. On completion of their three-day holiday on the island Their Royal Highnesses embarked in the Crusader at Nanaimo, October 23, and sailed aboard the destroyer to Vancouver. On November 9 at Charlottetown the Royal Couple boarded HMCS Ontario for an overnight voyage to Sydney, Cape Breton. They also spent the following night on board the cruiser travelling from Sydney to St.John’s, Nfld.It was during this passage to St.John’s that the Royal Couple were guests at a mess dinner in the officers’ wardroom and visited junior officers in the gun room enjoying an informal sing-song with them.Naval guards of honor were An extensive training program was provided for the cadets of the submarine aspect.Numerous ex ercises were conducted, to mutual benefit, with submarines of both the Royal Navy and the US Navy, mer, ’involved intensive .training Training cruises, of varying dura-activities in co-operation with units | tion, were carried out during the of the Royal Navy and the French year accounting for many thou-Navy.This result in a most valu-! sands of miles steamed, able period of training during which the air group set a new RCN flying record, 1,016 flying hours in 31 days.During the 11-week Mediterranean cruise, the group flew a total of 2.155 hours, and carried out 1,052 deck landings.Aircraft employed were the Sea Fury fighters of 871 squadron and the anti-submarine Avengers of 881 squadron, a total of 25 aircraft being involved. In one large-scale exercise, carried out near the close of the cruise, sub-hunting aircraft from the Magnificent were credited with four submarine “sinkings” and three “probables” within the course of a single day.A total of 158 anti-submarine sorties were flown during the cruise—for more than had been achieved in any through the year, with particular ^ring vStï^rilieif Royal Highnesses to naval establishments, and at many other points during the tour.THANKS FOR YOUR PATRONAGE ST.FRANCIS TAXI Lennoxviile Tel.2-7333 and 2-5414 New Construction and Modifications Plans for continued naval ex pansion are perhaps best understood through a glance at the program for construction of new ships. The first of 14 new anti-. submarine destroyer escorts was University Training Divisions. This jlaunched at Montreal on Novem-included t£ree ca^e^ training t>er 30 Christened HMCS % St.cruises to the U-K.from Halifax, Laurent by Her Excellency the by HMC Ships La Hulloise (frig- yjsoountess Alexander of Tunis, ate Cdr.T.C.Pullen, Oakville, this vessel is the prototype of a Ont.), Crescent (destroyer—Lieut.- rad-:caiiy new ail-Canadian naval Cdr.G.H.Hayes, Victoria) and c;esign_ Thirteen more ships of Swansea (trigate—Lieut.-t dr.J.L.tffis ncw ciasSi designed speeifical-Korning, Montreal); formed of the situation. When Henry III entertained a thousand knights, peers, and assorted nobles who came to attend the Yuletide marriage of the Princess Margaret, his majesty received a royal Christmas gift of 2,700 pounds, plus 600 fat oxen from the Archibishop of York. With similar assistance, whether exhorted or given in the spirit of generosity appropriate to the season, his majesty could well afford to give Christmas feasts for the poor like the one given in Westminister Hall in 1924, which lasted a week.Striving to outdo his predecessors and give his successors something to shoot at, Henry VIII kept one Yuletide at which the cost of gold cloth that was used amounted to 600 pounds alone. He had tents erected and artificial gardens plotted within the spacious hall of his ! palace.Knights came out of the ; tents to joust in tournaments and fantastically dressed dancers, cov-: cred from head to foot with gay ribbon streamers, emerged from the gardens to entertain the guests.Preparation for the feasting on such occasions is perfectly appalling to epicures of the 20th century —and can only be vaguely comprehended by considering that Richard II normally employed 2,000 cooks to prepare food for the 10,000 persons who dined—irrespective of special feasting at his expense every day.Biskpiou’s jlaias Aid iHeld Annual j for the election of officers, who were all returned to office. At the close of the meeting, refreshments were served by the hostess, assisted by Mrs.Mark Porter, who will entertain the Aid at j her home, on V/ednesday afternoon, January 30, 1952.Bishopton, Dec.2 — The last meeting of the Ladies' Aid of the GLENDAY AND SPRING ROADS United Church for 1951.was held | at the home’of Mrs.Clara Gilbert. The president, Mrs.M.Porter, was in the chair and the secretary, Mrs.Denzil Kenney, read the minutes of the last meeting, and call cd the roll call.Busines pertaining to the Christmas Cheer boxes was discussed ; and gifts are to be sent to some friends, who have always been : very generous in helping this society in all their work.Mrs.Denzil Kenney was asked by the president to take the chair Mr.and Mrs.\\V.S.Mitchell and George, spent a day in Danville, where they were guests of Mr.and Mrs.Lome Mitchell.Mr.Angus Parsons and two daughters, Lynda and Barbara, and Mr.Lloyd Hackaway, of Toronto, Ont., were week-end guests of Mr.and Mrs.Albert Parsons.Lynda and Barbara are remaining for a longer stay with their grandparents.Mr.Thornton Cleveland spent a few days in Barnston at the home of Mr.and Mrs.Hubert Sutton.mi timet fa * VHWPW tj^m- é *y cum1/ fa We're self-appointed Santa's helpers—carrying good cheer to all — far or near. Thanks for Your Patronage!
