William Tremblay, M.L.A., A.Blain, M.L.A., Armani Crepeau, M.L.A., Notary Savignac, Montreal; Dr.John Hayes, Richmond, and Laurent Barre, Catholic Union of Farmers, MR.CHARLES B.HOWARD Although still a young man, Mr.Charles Benjamin Howard, the ~ ~\t' er of Parliament for Sherbrooke County, has had career and is recognized as one of the outstanding lumbermen of the Eastern Townships and of the Province of Quebec.He was born at Smith\u2019s Mills, now Tomifobia, Stanstead County, on September 27, 1885, the son of the la te Benjamin Cate Howard and Helen E Sails Howard.His ancestors on the Howard side came from Ireland into Barnston County and later took up government homestead la™ Apple Grove, four miles west of Beebe, where his great-great giandfathei homestpaded the Howard farm.He and his wife, Mary Ann Williamson, are buried in the Catholic cemetery at Stanstead.His grandfather, James Howard, took over the farm and mairied Clarina Hunt, daughter of Mehitabel White, a descendant of the Whites of Griffin Corner, whose ancestors came over on the \u201cMayflower and moved into Canada after the United States gained their independence., Mrs.Clarinda Hunt Howard is still living and resides at Beebe.At the age of six years Charles Benjamin Howard moved with his , parents to Sherbrooke,'where he has since made his home.He was ; educated at the Sherbrooke High School, now the Cambridge School, and at Stanstead Wesleyan College, Stanstead, also taking special French courses from Reverend Father Godbout, at St.Charles\u2019 Seminary, Sherbrooke.When fifteen years old he entered the employ of his father to learn the lumber business and resided for a time at Valley Junction, Beauce County.He became a partner of B.C.Howard and Company with his father, the late B.C.Howard, and D.J.Sails in 1908.The firm gradually increased their limit holdings in the Counties of Beauce, Dorchester, Bellechasse and Montmagny, disposing of their properties in 1912 to the Brown Corporation.Mr.Howard pioneered the settlement of Lake Frontier in Montmagny County and built mills there where his company acquired extensive limits.He then associated himself with Messrs.Charles, Wilfrid and Philip Bienvenue becoming vice-president of the English Lake Lumber Company, Limited, Lake Frontier.In 1919, together with his father, he purchased the holdings of Mr.D.J.Sails in the B.C.Howard and Company, Limited.said that he was visiting friends of j a course because he was very anxi-the family at Valcour, a village j 0us to see such a measure become twenty-five miles east of here, and : iaw.He believed it was Canada\u2019s was playing on a hay-stack with sev- j duty as a good neighbor to do this eral other boys, when he fell and ;
