[" Established 1897.SHERBROOKE, CANADA, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 1935.Thirty-Ninth Year.FRANŒ NOT PREPARED TO DEMAND SANCTIONS IN AFRICAN TROUBLE Understood French Desire to Support Britain Will Not Go to Limit of Affronting Italy — Britain May Propose Moral Condemnation of Italy at League Session Rather Than Application of Sanctions—General Strikes Loom in Europe if War Is Declared.T QUEBEC’S CREDIT HIGH AMONG LONDON BANKERS Assistant Provincial Treasurer Claims “London Market Is Strongly Confident of Sanity of Quebec’s Administration.he French cabinet today met to define France’s stand before the! crucial meeting of the League of Nations Council on Ethiopia next month, and, as expected, decided nothing definite.Premier Laval, who will head a strong delegation to Geneva, was given a free hand on the understanding that France will support Great Britain, yet cannot adopt such a rigid stand as would affront Italy. The French stand lent credence to Paris reports last night that Britain herself would propose moral condemnation of Italy, rather than call for sanctions, in event of Italian aggression.Laborites of both Britain and the continent, it was reported, are planning general strikes and labor boycotts against Italy to prevent a war in East Africa.Guglielmo Marconi, radio inventor, will direct the telegraph, telephone and wireless communications of the Italian armies in East Africa. The Italian Government announced all furloughs suspended in a move to marshal all its military strength in event of a crisis.Emperor Haile Selassie ordered a gas mask drill to acquaint the natives with the devices and continued passing out reserves of arms hidden in secret underground chambers and caches cut from the solid rock.ITALY CANCELS ANNUAL FURLOUGHS OF SOLDIERS Home, Aug.28.—The Government, marshalling every resource, to meet a possible crisis in Ethiopia, today decided to cancel all furloughs to the.military personnel, it was disclosed by informed sources. The order, these sources related, will cancel the annual holiday of every member of the army, navy and aviation forces.Meanwhile five vessels are being reconditioned in Genoa to reinforce Italy’s route to East Africa, it was reliably reported. These ships are reported to be among several of those recently purchased abroad to augment Italy’s facilities for transporting the army to the Ethiopian battlefront. The ships have been renamed the Campagnia, Lombardia, Umbria, Lazio and the Lignira. The source from which they were obtained was not disclosed, but it is mderstood that when they are reconditioned they will be able to transport four-thousand men each. The Minister of Propaganda today officially denied reports published abroad that 12,000 Somali trops armed and trained by Italian colonial officers had deserted to Ethiopia with their arms.“The Government," said the spokesman, “officially denies thei-e is any foundation for this report, and likewise states it is untrue that the Italian legation in Addis Ababa has asked for the sequestration of these arms and their return to the Italian colonies.” *— FRANCE WILL BACK GREAT 1 BRITAIN | Paris, Aug.28.—France will back Great Britain in support of the League of Nations covenant in the Italo-Ethiopian crisis, but will oppose too rigid interpretation of its provisions as likely to be viewed by Italy as an act 0f hostility, the cabinet decided in its emergency session this afternoon.DAY OF NATIONAL CHURCH FOR DOMINION HELD NEAR Moderator of United Church, on Return from England, Believes Institution Will Come During His Lifetime.NATIVES TERROR STRUCK AT SIGHT OF GAS MASKS Addis Ababa, Aug.28.—Emperor Haile Selassie today ordered a gas mask drill Friday to convince superstitious natives that these protective devices are not faces of devils. The mask rehearsal was decided upon after an American correspondent, trying out a gas mask in a hotel corridor, met a half dozen Ethiopians, who fled 'shrieking in terror.Afflicted with financial worries resulting from the heavy drop of the thaler amidst preparations for the impending hostilities, the Emperor arose today before dawn to consult his “brain trust,” headed by Everett Andrew Colson from Maine, Colson is genearlly credited with having inspired the restrained policy of the Emperor in not provoking Italy during the mounting crisis and also in calming the fiery tribal chiefs who are clamoring for action.Colson came here, in ]9o0, primarily as financial adviser to the Government. His position has since been greatly broadened. He frequently works twenty hours daily, diivding his time between the palace, where he confers lengthily with the Emperor, and the dual offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Finance.INTEREST TODAY CENTRES ON ITALIAN CONFERENCE With the Italian Army, Bolzano, Italy, Aug.28.—The military manoeuvres on this Austrian frontier drew to a close today to permit Premier Mussolini to preside over an extraordinary cabinet meeting this afternoon.Premier Mussolini's recent vehement statements that “sanctions mean war” led to the feeling here that, if an attempt were made to adhere absolutely to the letter of the covenant, all hope of peaceable settlement would be lost. All groups are in agreement that the cabinet session, the first ever held outside of Rome during the thirteen years of the Fascist regime, will result in some decisive conclusions relative to the Italo-Ethiopian conflict though these may be kept secret. The cabinet members, many of whom have been actively participating in the manoeuvres, faced problems complicated .by the attitude of Great Britain, Political circles called attention to the fact, that a regular cabinet meeting hud already been scheduled for September 15 and mentioned that 11 Duce would Continued on Page 2, Quebec, Aug.28.—Firm in the belief that he would see a national church in Canada during his lifetime, the Et.Rev.Richard Roberts, D.D., Moderator of the United Church of Canada, returned home yesterday from Europe. The former minister of the American Presbyterian Church, Montreal, was accompanied by Mrs.Roberts, Beyond stating his conviction on a national church, Dr.Roberts did not care to discuss the subject of church union, Like Principal Morgan, of McGill, however, he appear-! ed to be anxious about the Abyssian situation.Britishers were much concerned, he reported, because the threat to the peace of the world caused by the rift between Abyssinia and Italy raised the racial question in a very acute fora.“I think that the League of Nations is a very great instrument, for the preservation of collective security,” he remarked, “and that is the most important thing just now.” THREE INJURED IN MISHAP AT WESTSHEFFORD Claire Lamoureux, Ten Years Old, Suffered Injury to Head and Fractured Shoulder When Driver cf Car Took Ditch to Avoid Striking Cyclist.West Shefford, Aug.28.— A ten-year-old girl suffered a fractured shoulder and two older people were badly shaken up and bruised late yesterday, when the automobile in which they were travelling overturned in the ditch after the driver swerved to the side of the road to avoid striking a cyclist.Mr.and Mrs.John Campbell, their step-child, Claire Lamoureux, ten years old, and Mr.Campbell's brother were driving on the Granby-West Shefford road when the accident occurred. In front of the.Lawrence farm, Campbell closed up upon another of his brothers who was riding a bicycle and honked for the road. The brother recognized ine sound of the horn, and waved a hand, signalling John Campbell to pass. However, just as Campbell endeavored to pass, the cyclist lost his balance and fell in front of the car.To avoid striking him, Campbell gave a.strong jerk to the steering wheel and caused his car to swerve into the ditch where it overturned.Claire Lamoureux suffered a deep gash to the back.of the head and a fracture of the left, shoulder.Mr.and Mrs.Campbell were badly shaken up and bruised.Campbell and the girl were removed to Dr.Run-nells’ Hospital, after first aid treatment had been rendered by Dr.Picard, of West Shefford. The condition of the young girl was reported ns satisfactory this morning.Campbell was allowed to return to his home last night.Quebec, August 28.—“The London market is strongly confident of the sanity of Quebec’s administration,” A.P.B.Williams, Assistant Provincial Treasurer of Quebec, said here last evening on his return from an unrevealed mission to England.“Money is abnormally cheap in London for refunding operations,” he added.“The lists for a £l'0,0Cd,-000 refunding loan for India were closed within five minutes and at a low per cent.An Australian offering was immediately over-subscribed.” While Mr.Williams refused to discuss the reason for his trip to London, he remarked that Quebec’s credit stands high and pointed out that the 3% per cent.1936 bonds, one of the few issues listed in the Old Country, are selling above 102.YOUTH’S DEATH NEAR RICHMOND OFFERS RIDDLE Rene Brodeur, Twenty-Three Years Old, of Valcourt, Found Dead in Field Four Acres from Abandoned Automobile.Richmond, Aug.28.—The Attorney-General of the Province of Quebec will decide whether an autopsy is to he performed upon the body of Rene Brodeur in an effort to clear up the mystery of the death of the twenty-three-year old resident of Valcourt, who was found dead in a field near his home yesterday.Brodeur was discovered about four acres from where his automobile was found. He had been missing since Friday night when he left his home in his motor car.Valcourt is a village situated between Richmond and Waterloo-.Following the discovery' of the dead youth’s body' yesterday, Dr.P.Langlois, district coroner, held an inquest and the verdict which was returned read that: “Rene Brodeur was found dead in the woods with twelve dollars, Lis watch and ring. There were no marks of violence. He was found about four acres from his automobile. He had been dead about eighteen hours.Death was due to an undetermined cause.” Brod-eur’s automobile was found on Saturday morning parked on a lonely road leading from the main highway towards his home. The discovery was made by' a butcher who notified Philip Brodeur, father of the victim. In the car were found Brodeur’s hat, coat and collar and some food which he had purchased. The gasoline tank was full and the keys of the car were found inside.A search was started immediately and yesterday Brodeur’s body was found in a field.A doctor was called and pronounced the man dead, stating that he had been dead about eighteen hours. No cause of death was given.Farmers living near where the automobile was found told Brodeur’s relatives that they had seen an automobile stop late on Friday night. They then saw the lights extinguished, but heard nothing else. They stated that they did not see any occupants leave the car.GERMAN AVIATOR EXECUTED AS A SPY.Berlin, Aug.28.—The silk-hatted executioner of Pletzensee prison swung his axe for the third time this w’eek when at dawn today he beheaded Lieut.Mueiler-Hcineeke of the aviation corps, convicted as a spy.The officer was one of many sent to the block on charges of betraying military secrets. The same headsman yesterday executed Frau Charlotte Juenemann, convicted of starving her three infant children, and Willy Gehrke, robber and killer.MESSAGE TRAVELLED LONG DISTANCE ON MERCY TRIP Conductor on Speeding Passenger Train Credited with Starting Chain that Travelled 220 Miles to Save Boys Two Miles Away.Sterling, 111., Aug.28.—The conductor of a speeding passenger train was credited today with starting a chain of messages that travelled 220 miles to send a rescue squad two miles and save five youths whose sail boat capsized in Rock River.Elmer Jackson of Elmhurst, Chicago suburb, conductor on a Chicago and North Western passenger train, yesterday saw the accident two miles east of here, where the tracks skirt the river. He wrote a note and dropped it off at Nelson, III., three miles farther east.John Babin, railroad operator at Nelson, telephoned the message to the dispatcher at Chicago, 108 miles east.It was then relayed back to Sterling, where railroad employees telephoned the police and fire departments, which sent boats to the rescue.A strong wind made it impossible for the youths to work their way to shore.PEER SEEKING TRIAL BEFORE UPPER CHAMBER Baron de Clifford, Charged with Manslaughter, Expected to Answer Charge Before House of Lords.Kingston, England, Aug.28.— Edward Southwell Russell, Baron de Clifford, today was committed for trial on a charge of manslaughter arising from a motorcar accident.Indications were he might seek trial by his peers, the House of Lords.Baron de Clifford, scion of an historic family whose lineage goes back to the thirteenth century, is a racing motorist and a son-in-law of the late Mrs.Kate Meyrick, night-club queen. The charge arises from the death of Douglas Hopkins, killed in a collision between his car and that of Lord de Clifford. The accident did not occur in a race but on the open highway. In addition to manslaughter, he is charged with dangerous driving and driving without due care and attention. The twenty-six-year-old peer reserved defence, after pleading not guilty. When the judge ordered him tried at the central criminal court— the Old Bailey—the prosecutor interjected, “before the House of Lords, 1 think.” Whether the trial proceeds before the House of Lords depends on whether the prosecution decides to proceed with the manslaughter count. If it does not, the minor counts would be heard before the Old Bailey. The last comparable House of Lords trial of a peer was in 1901, when the trial for bigamous marriage of the Earl of Russell to Mollie Cook in Nevada shocked Victorians.AUSTRO-GERMAN CONCILIATION APPEARS NEAR Italy’s Imminent Preoccupation with Ethiopia Makes It Necessary for Austria to Find Aid from Some Other Neighbor.Vienna, Aug.28.—'Conflicting reports of an Austro-German reconciliation and a new Fascist Heim-wehr regime with the restoration of Hapsburg monarch flitted through Vienna today. The reconciliation rumors at least had a solid basis, for an understanding was reached yesterday between Egon Berger-Waldenegg, Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Franz von Papen, German Minister to Austria, to the effect that the newspaper “hate campaign” must cease on both sides of the Austro-German line.Observers noted that Italy’s imminent pre-occupation with Ethiopia is likely to make it necessary for Austria to lean on some other neighbor.Peace with Germany is one way out. However, there are also predictions of a closer- co-operation with the Little Entente which is lately becoming more friendly with Prince von Starhemberg, Austrian Vice-Chancellor.The Von Starhemberg regime would welcome the Little Entente— Rumania, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia—as an effective, bulwark against the Hapsburg restoration for the next few years.! NOTED DOCTOR TAKES DAY ! AWAY FROM HIS CHARGES Dr.A.R.Dafoe Reports Dionne Quintuplets, Entering Sixteenth Month of Life Today, Were Never in Better Health.Callander, Ont., Aug.28.— Dr.Allan Roy Dafoe watched the Dionne quintuplets enter their sixteenth month of life today and then hurried off to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto where their parents, Oliva and Elzire Dionne- already are visiting. But there was no reason for the fifteen months 0ld youngsters to feel deserted on their “birthday.” Several hundred persons crowded around their hospital-home to watch them go through their two daily appearances an-d there were two kind nurses to look after their wants in the hospital. Before he left Dr.Dafoe reported his tiny charges, born May 28th, 1934, never were in better health.WORK RELIEF BUDGET TO PROVIDE FUNDS TO IMPLEMENT “NEW DEAL” A BIG SUCCESS REGISTERED BY RICHMOND FAIR Record-Smashing Attendance at Second Day of Annual Exhibition of Richmond County Agricultural Society.ALBERTA HALTS REDEMPTION OF CERTIFICATES Government Takes Drastic Action Following Run by Investors After Victory of Social Credit Forces in General Elections, Calgary, Aug.28.— In the big auditorium of the Calgary Prophetic Bible Institute, built by William Aberhart before he turned to politics, sixty-three candidates of the Aberhart Social Credit party were to meet today to decide points of policy before taking over the Government of Alberta. It was expected Aberhart would become Premier on September 3, one of his successful candidates resigning a seat in his favor, On a wave of popularity, the Aberhart forces were swept to victory at the polls last week but they will take office amid disquieting financial reports. In Edmonton yesterday, Premier Reid announced payment of provincial savings certificates had been suspended temporarily because of an unusually heavy drain on liquid funds. While Reid and Aberhart joined in issuing reassuring statements, pointing to the temporary embarrassing financial position and predicting things would be running smoothly in a week or ten days.Mayor Davison of Calgary, served notice the city would be forced to default on its bonds unless the province or the Dominion came to its assistance. , One of the decisions to be made at the caucus today was whether the Social Credit party would merge with the Stevens Reconstruction party in the federal election on October 14.A though negotiations were opened between Aberhart and Stevens shortly after the provincial election, no definite decision was reached and it was left to the party caucus to decide whether joint or separate candidates would be placed in the field. It was taken for granted here that Aberhart would enter candidates in the Dominion election, either his own or jointly with the Reconstructionists but it was understood he would not enter Manitoba and Saskatchewan without being asked by organizations in those provinces. For ten or twelve years, Alberta has accepted savings in denominations of $100, the fund growing to $1.0,244,063 by June 30.Since that time and particularly in the last month, there have been steady withdrawals with the result the liquid position of the fund was disappearing rapidly. This led to the decision to suspend payments.Government officials.Premier Reid among them, would not disclose the extent of the withdrawals but it, was understood they aggregated about $1,800,000.The province invested about $2,000,000 of the funds in its own bonds which have fallen in price in recent months.NEWFOUNDLAND STORMS CAUSE FORTY DEATHS Rescue Vessels Today Busily Engaged Searching Derelicts Following Storm that Claimed a Dozen Ships.Richmond, Aug.28.— Richmond | County’s Agricultural Society’s an-jnual exhibition is going down on 'record as an unparalleled success.!
