[" forbrookr üaüg Ifrorî» Established 1897.SHERBROOKE, CANADA, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 1935.Thirty-Ninth Year.FEARED OVER FIVE HUNDRED HAVEræVÆKE LOST LIVES IN FLORIDA TORNADO War Veterans Construction Camps Scenes of Greatest Suffering as Hurricane, Accompanied by Great Walls of Water, Swept Over Florida Keys \u2014 Rescue Train Sent into Stricken Area Reported Wrecked\u2014Red Cross Places Preliminary Estimates of Lives Lost at Five Hundred.All News of Government Activities in Future to Be \u201cHanded Out\u201d by Government News Bureau if Social Credit Premier Has His Way.Miami, September 4.\u2014Destruction of war veterans construction camps on the Florida Keys, some of them swept by high walls of water rolling in from raging seas, brought today rapidly-increasing fears of a terrific death toll from the hurricane roaring over the Gulf area.A searching party from Miami réported by wireless to the Red Cross an estimated loss of life of five hundred.Devastation was heaviest in the camps of the veterans, engaged in building a highway down the Keys to Key West.One of these camps was demolished.Another was a mass of wreckage.A rescue train, sent down the Keys on Monday to bring hack the veterans, was reported wrecked.This information came from a Coast Guard plane which surveyed the area early today.Survivors at Camp Number One, the construction site farthest to the north, said the train had passed through there, intending to pick up the veterans there on the return trip.Walls of water as high as fifteen feel poured continuously over these Keys for hours as the hurricane raged up from the Atlantic, across the lip of Florida and into the Gulf.Once in the Gulf, the path of the storm was northerly.It centered this morning to the west of Clearwater and gales were expected by coast towns.Everywhere the hurricane warning was out: two square flags, red with black centres, one flown above the other.Ships were kept to port.A message from St.Petersburg, the first since the storm swerved up 4- the West Florida coast, said the tide Edmonton, Sept.4.\u2014Répertoriai enterprise will be a thing of the past at the legislative buildings if present plans of the new Social Credit Government are carried out, it was declared today.Ihon.J.W.Hugill, K.C., Attorney-General, and Dr.Victor Wright, close friends of Premier William Aberhart, announced that the administration soon would inaugurate what newspapermen term a \u201chandout bureau.\u2019\u2019 Premier Aberhart, they said, would operate a \u201cGold Fish Bowl\u201d Government, his press bureau publicizing each department of government.News from the Government, it was said, would be \u201cdished out on platters\u201d to reporters after being handled by the Government news bureau.ETHIOPIAN TENSION SOMEWHAT EASED TODAY WITH WITHDRAWAL OF OIL CONCESSIONS The Ethiopian tension was somewhat eased today with the withdrawal of the gigantic territorial concession Ethiopia granted to United States interests last week.After consultation with the State Department in Washington, the Standard-Vacuum Oil Corporation announced it would withdraw from the arrangement.This also made clear that no other interests were involved.British, French and Italian delegates at Geneva conferred shortly before Ihe first private meeting of the League of Nations Council.It was announced the British and French jointly had drafted a report on the abortive Paris peace negotiations, although it will not be presented jointly to the Council.The British believe the report acceptable to the Italians.Discussion at Geneva is expected to be protracted.The initial problem is to reach an agreement on the procedure to be adopted.From Rome came statements Italy was confident of victory in the Council sessions.CALGARY SEEKING LARGE LOAN FROM GOVERNMENTS NEW QUEBEC SCHOOL READY Quebec, Sept.4.\u2014The Jesuit Fathers took possession of the new St.Charles Garnier School here yesterday and to mark the occasion a dinner was held bringing together the priests of the institution and the architects and contractors of the building.Pupils will be admitted tomorrow.On September 25th and 26th the school will be blessed and other ceiemonies unfolded in the presence of Cardinal Villeneuve.flFVFI AND TO HAYE ELECTION LADS TO ADIT FOR A COUNCIL!
