Defences of Odessa Are Repulsing All German Efforts to Take City While Defenders of Leningrad Report that Nazis Have Been Thrown Back.CLAIMS ITALY IN CONDITION FOR INVASION King Peter of Yugoslavia Is Convinced that British Invasion of Junior Axis Partner Would Succeed.Attack On U.S.Destroyer Likely To Produce Sharp Expansion Of North Atlantic Patrol Strength Moscow, Sept.6.—©—The Red army’s defence ring around besieged Odessa was said today to have withstood heavy assault, while at the opposite flank of the Russian-German battlefront the militia-reinforced Red troops battled grimly to hold Leningrad.Along the entire battlefront between the two fiercely-guarded citadels fighting raged on without let-up, the Soviet mid-day communique said, as the war neared the end of its eleventh week. The communique declared Red Army defenders of the big Black Sea port at the Southern end of the battleline had been joined by Russian sailors, and military reports from the port said citizen soldiers, too, were taking’part in the defence.Without specifying on what front, the war report said units of the Fifteenth German Division had been beaten back with 700 killed and 200 captured.Russian forces were said to have seized eighteen cannon, eight howitzers, six tanks, an armored car and quantities of light arms and ammunition.Meanwhile sabre-swinging Cossack cavalrymen were reported raiding deep behind' Nazi lines. The Soviet Bureau of Information said that the Cossacks, striking in force and sometimes remaining behind Nazi lines for days, were hacking down enemy infantry reinforcements, cutting communications, burning supplies and raiding enemy headquarters.Dispatches from the far-stretched battlefront depicted the civilian-reinforced stand at hard-pressed Leningrad, long-attached Kiev and pocketed Odessa as writing a new chapter in the history of war.At Leningrad Red Army counterattacks were said to have thrust back the Germans and retaken four towns at approaches to the city.A military report from Odessa said Soviet naval forces as well as armed townspeople were standing with the Red Army in the land defences thrown up in a semi-circle around the besieged port, A special correspondent of Izves-tia who reported he went to the port by sea said 82,000 volunteers from the city’s 500,000 population had taken places in the fighting line and that work units, ripping cobblestones from the streets, had completed defence works.(The Nazis have claimed Lenin NO LIMIT PLACED ON BRITISH FINANCIAL HELP FOR SOVIETS Edinburgh, Scotland, Sept.6.— (® — Sir Kingsley Wood, Chancellor of the Exchequer, declared today that Britain would place no monetary limit on her financial assifttance to Soviet Russia, Describing British assistance to Russia as gladly given, he said in a speech that the Russians “have told us they would not wish any such financial help to he provided as a gift, but they have asked for credit insofar as the help we give them is not matched by supplies they send us.” He said Britain was “standing up well” under the strain of a daily expenditure of 12,-500,000 pounds sterling (approximately $55,000,000) and expressed confidence that further taxation in the current financial year can be avoided if inflation is prevented.Londor Sept.6.—((P)—Dried separated milk convinced the time is ripe for a British invasion of Italy. The King has definite ideas about the prosecution of the war and the part he can play in it.‘T believe the British should invade Italy,” he confided to an interviewer.“I think the time is ripe.” “I have no regret about the decision I took to fight it out with Hitler,” he added, while strolling through the garden surrounding his mother's country house seventy miles from London. He has been residing with Queen Marie since June, when he arrived ip Britain by plane with only an extra suit, shoes and a pair of pajamas.About Britain, he said: ‘‘If I can’t be with my people in my own land, I would rather be here,” King Peter is preparing to enter Cambridge this fall, but he appears to be interested most in becoming a Royal Air Force pilot. He indicated his hands have been itching to get at the controls of a plane ever since his arrival. He told recently of his flight from Yugoslavia to Athens when he piloted the plane most of the wray because the pilot was exhausted from three straight nights of aerial combat.Peter became King of Yugoslavia March 27 in a military coup d’etat that preceded the Nazi invasion of his country.Normally he would have assumed the throne today.Darlan Gains Added Powers Over Vichy Administration Administration Service Formerly Under The water is going down fast.” Sure enough, soon there was only a little puddle at the bottom.”1 knowr what's happening,” Betty declared."The water is soaking into the sand at the sides of the well.It runs out just as we thought it would run in.” Bobby was frowning.“If we could put some cement and stones inside the well like the one over at the farmhouse, the sand wouldn't tumble in, and the water wouldn't run out.I'll tell you something sparkled and threw out tiny rainbows which made her blink. She put her fingers down cautiously and picked up a handful of the fine, clean, white sand, and there lay a ring with a sparkling stone in the back of it, held by two little green-gold dragons.Betty slipped the ring over her thumb, but it was much too large.Perhaps it would make a bracelet for her doll. The sand was embedded in the prongs which held the stone, so Betty went down to the edge of the lake and washed it and rubbed it on her little, checked play suit. The stone sparkled more than ever. She went back and pol- ‘There Are Treasures Inside This Fort,” Bobby Defended Stoutly what,” continued Bobby, his eyes sparkling.“I’ll go and ask Muvver for that little piece of stove pipe under the edge of the cottage. Then we’ll put a lot of little stones in the bottom, and the -water can’t get away.” “Let’s have the weil right in the middle of the pile of sand where the fort is,” urged Betty, “for it is softer to dig there.” Bobby looked disapproving, but he knew that Betty would have her own way, and it was going to be fun to see if the new well would really hold water.Betty kept on digging.Alter awhile she stopped to rest as it was warm working in the sun.As she peered into the hole she had made.puzzle Corner MIWWI LETTER CHANGES On the sign board you will find five objects.By changing just one letter in each object, yon can have the name of an animal. What are the five animals.JUNIOR CROSS-WORD PUZZLE 1 Z S” H 5 L i s 9 m ¦ ;o II 12. w ¦ 15 id 15 ib 17 16 19 VERTICAL 1- Constellation 2- Reclaim 3- And (Latin) 4- Conjunction ô-Harvesting machines 6-Superlative suffix 8-Fetters 12-Edge 14-Stupid person 13-Each (abbr.) i5_in
