attention to the life of the foremost contemporary Briton. However that may be, Mr.Gucdalln’s portrait of the British Prime Minister is most welcome. The main events of Clnuvh ill’s colorful career are fnmiHnr to most people, thanks to the assiduous efforts of the press since his rise to fame and power, bat his latest, biographer has given the familiar story a typically delightful touch. There is not much new material in "Mr.Churchill” but the story is re told with all the charm and lueidiily which has made Mr.Gucdnlla the most popular biographer of the day.Manifestly the production of “Mr.Churchill” was a rush job, but that has not prevented the author from writing a fascinating and moving account of the public and political career of one of the, if not the greatest, certainly one of the most, interesting statesmen England has produced. For Mr.Guedalla is no hero-worshipper, and his treatment of -his subject is not marred by awe or stupefaction. On the contrary Ins able and witty pen has produced the portrait of a man, and' not.a sticky cardboard figure. Thanks to this, “Mr.¦Church- ill” rends as easily as a novel and should hold no terrons to those readers who seem constitution-aily unable to digest biography. If Mr, Gm'dalla does not hold his subject, up as a tin god, neither does he spare the “mediocrities” who kept Churchill from office in the Lloyd George Coalition Government after the last war, and be has some hard things to say of erstwhile popular heroes including Ramsay MacDonald, Earl Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain.Mr.Churchill was too active, too talented and too unconventional to suit the solid, substantial qualities of the “mediocrities.” This is by no means a definitive biography of a great, contemporary - a man who is a soldier, administrator, man of letters and sportsman besides 11 statesman. But it is an entertaining and enjoyable portrait of a very great man executed with style, Ihumor, balance and good taste.Should be included in your “must read” list, no matter what your literary tastes are.—W.H.BIRAD LEY.o sÜoftw IVES HILL Mrs.Sarah Cairns has returned to community ws-.ru deeply saddened when it became known that Clinton Sweet had passed away at the early a£e of fifty-one years following an illness of only a few weeks, although medical advice and examination revealed that an accident in April, 1334, when his fine horses ran away, had left a scar which ultimately resulted in a fatal illness.Clinion Leroy Sweet was bom at Iron Hill, February 10, 1891, the only son of Mrs.Amanda Tibbitts Sweet and the late Darwin Sweet. On October 20, 1915, he married Mildred Gwendola, younger daughter of the late Mr.and Mrs.Alba W.Beard.Since that time Mr.and Mrs.Sweet resided at “The Pines,” the Beard homestead, where Mr.Sweet continued the tradition of the Beard family by faithfully discharging the duties of mail carrier between Iran Hill and West Shcf-ford.He was the third generation doing this work, Mr.William Mof-fatt, grandfather of Mrs.Clinton Sweet, having inaugurated a mail service, free of charge, between Sweet&burg and Iron Hill almost a hundred years ago.Clinton Sweet was particularly well known in this part of the Eastern.Townships and had, throughout the years of his administration of mail delivery, built up a reputation of sterling qualities by his keen sense of duty, affability and cour-tesy, having continuously gone the “extra mile” in doing countless errands to accommodate people along the route. In West Shefford and Iron Hill, aside from the work necessitated by the Government mail contract, he also carried mail on snowshoes or sled, when conditions were against making the trip in ordinary ways of conveyance.Clinton Sweet therefore epitomized the old tradition that the King’s mail must get through. In the fall fairs Mr.Sweet and his thoroughbred herd of Brown Swiss cattle will be missed in the show-ring.The funeral service, preceded by prayers at his residence, took place at Holy Trinity Church on Easter Monday afternoon, April 6.Rev.E.F.Mncklin officiated and spoke very feelingly though briefly of the many acts of good fellowship which Clinton Sweet had freely bestowed upon local citizens-.The choir lad the singing of three hymns and the Nunc Dimittis, with Mrs.Rhea Moffatt presiding at the organ. The bearers were four nephews of (the deceased, Messrs.Herman, Wilfred, Lynford and Jackson Hadloclt, of Iron Hill. The floral offerings were numerous and beautiful and interment was made in the Union Cemetery here.Deepest sympathy is extended to the widow, mother and only sister.Among those in attendance from a distance were Mr.-and Mrs.Merrill Beard, of Ashland, N.H., Mrs.Hartley Sawyer, of Montreal, Mrs.L.K.Fessenden, Mr.and Mrs.Eben Fessenden, of Fulford, Miss Lora Robinson, of Sweetsburg.Mr.and Mrs.Frank Dennis, of St.Albans, Vt., Mr.and Mrs.Bockus, of Fulford, Mr.and Mrs.Walter Clough, of Cowansville, Mr.and Mrs.Ernest Paquette, of St.Albans, Vt., Mr.and Mrs.Kenneth Miltimore and Mi", and Mrs.Robert Miltimore, of Sutton, Mr.Hc-nry Clough and grandson Henry of the Centre Road, Mr.and Mrs.John Worden, of Brome Centre.BURY Dr.A.J.Finlayson, of Magog, wishes to announce that due to gas rationing he will no longer be making his regular Tuesday trips to Bury. When a doctor ordered ice for his wife and no ice was available, an Eskimo of the Unga colony secured a stack of frozen steaks from a frosted foods plant and applied the steaks instead of ice, thus saving her life.SAYS ANGEL STOOD BESIDE CLERGYMAN Lc-keter, England, April 20.—Vh—; Told an angel was seen beside him! as he stood before his congregation ^ in St.Andrew's Church, Vicar
