The by-law for twenty thousand dollars has passed the City Council. This is outrageous.Of all gentlemen I have met in my short span of life I have yet to meet any with a stronger capacity and a keener sense of spending other people’s money than those who at present sit in the Council; it is an easy matter to spend that which one did not work and toil for and one which the most simple are capable of.I do not exactly know what the Council thinks the citizens of Sherbrooke are, but bv their actions one could fairly well judge. The sooner our local council adopt a drastic policy of economy the better for them and thi citizens.Yesterday one of the garbage team drivers was laid off, leaving four men to cart away the refuse from our homes.Against this we look at the City Hall over-staffed by men and women alike who are desperate in trying to hid themselves in the dust of the toil which would think Sherbrooke to be the city of millionaires instead of a city of toiling people.During the war in some paper I noticed a cartoon representing the building of an ancient shrine.Down in the dirt in the hollow were the slaves polishing and pulling the stones into place, while on the hill were men (?) stout with hot air and saying something to the beautiful site and finished product. The city fathers of today might do well to buckle up their sleeves, put on their thinking caps, arise from their softly padded chairs and experience a day of “work by perspiration,” relieve the unemployment of the City and let “fluffy ruffles” wait until the sun is shining brighter. This letter long, and tedious, resolves itself to this. Our fair city is too poor (or stingy) to afford five garbage wagons — few enough anyone knows—yet it can afford twenty thousand dollars to complete an already over-paid building.Thanking you Mr.Editor, I am, Yours truly, RITZ.returning with them.Mrs.(Rev.)
