House as well as the two older parties, performed his first act as leader j of United Farmers in Alberta in the Commons.Mr.Gardiner is House j leader of the group, and H.E.Spencer, of Battle River, is secretary. They ! lead a group of twelve members, all from Alberta, except Miss MacPhail, I who is expected to align herself with the Western group. The definite emergence of the Alberta group is accompanied by the \\ appearance of another group of Progressive members, who remain Pro- | gressives as opposed to the Liberal-Progressives now absorbed in the Liberal party. This group numbers five and will be led in the House by John Evans, of Rosetown, Saskatchewan. The Liberal-Progressives, sitting with Hon.Robert Forke on the Government side, number nine, and it is said that they will retain a certain amount of their identity by holding separate caucus and by the appointment of their own chairman.DISCUSSION ON IMPERIAL RELATIONS WILL LIKELY PUT DEBATE OVER TO MIDDLE OF FEBRUARY—PRINCE TO ATTEND JUBILEE CONFEDERATION CELEBRATION I* « DARING Violet Corderry.in addition to being one of the prettiest women in England, is the world’s champion woman auto racer. She has broken a number of dirt track records, and has raced on tracks on which no other woman has dared to try.SERBIA MOURNS DEATH OF ITS GREAT LEADER Nikola P.Pachitch, “Grand Old Man of the Balkans,” Who Died Yesterday Morning, Will Be Given National Honors at Funeral Sunday—Was Dozen Times Premier.^Associated Press Despatch) BELGRADE, Dec., 11.— The Serbian nation is stricken over the death of its great political leader, Nikola P.Pachitch, who died suddenly Friday morning from apoplexy. The body of the “grand old man of the Balkans” has been removed to the Cathedral, where it is lying in state.National honors will be accorded the man who held the premiership of Serbia a dozen times at his burial on Sunday.By common consent the political parties have called a truce until after the funeral.Even the formation of a new cabinet, which M.Pachitch was to have undertaken the day he died, will be held in abeyance until after the obsequies. The sudden and tragic end of M.Pachitch came at a particularly critical moment.lt came when there were difficulties in foreign relia-(Continued on page 13) 1 OTTAWA, Dec.11.—Amid scenes of unusual ceremonial splendor, the first session of Canada's sixteenth PaiTiament was opened yesterday afternoon with reading of the Speech from the Throne by His Excellency Viscount Willingdon.Expansive reference to the achievements of the Imperial Conference occupied the largest paragraph ir the Speech from the Throne. There is promise of the re-introduction of the Government measures which failed of passage at the last session; of measures to provide for assistance to works constructed for the production of domestic coke in Canada; of “certain legislation” related to the recommendations in rhe Maritimes Commission report tabled In the House yesterday afternoon; of another three-year branch line construction programme for the Canadian National Railways; of a request for ratification of the proposed agreement with the Grand Trunk Pacific debenture holders London; that it will have to await its completion till the middle of February, for it is learned that February 15 is the best guess for the reassembling of Parliament.ESTIMATES WHICH WERE TABLED YESTERDAY TOTAL $191,000,000 (Canadian Press Despatch) OTTAWA, December.11.—The estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1927, were tabled in the House of Commons late yesterday afternoon. The total amount to be voted is 8191,000,000, which is exactly the same amount as appeared in the estimates of the last Parliament and was not passed. The estimates tabled yesterday are of particular interest, because they contain the details f interim supply and the money spent by Gov-in 1 ernor-General’s warrants. The sud-of continuance in the con- den dissolution of Parliament last struction work on the Hudson Bay j summer made it necessary for the Railway. Government in power to provide Prince Has Accepted1 Invitation to for the Government service by Visit Canada Next Year Royal warrant, instead of by par- Of interest to all Canadians is ,bc, Immentary approval.Consequently, intimation in the Speech of the ac-! Professor Re-gaud has now returned to Paris, and it Is understood he is discussing with the Curie Institute arrangements for the treatment of the King, who has been variously reported as suffering from an intestinal ailment and cancer.Radium is extensively used m cancer cases.Official circlels are absolutely silent on the question of the removal of the King to Paris, but it is felt that the trip to the French capital would be a good thing for two reasons—first, the King’s life might he saved, and second, should the King die in Paris it wmuld eliminate tne necessity of having former Crown Prince Carol return to Bucharest. It is considered that should the King die in Bucharest, refusal by the government to grant Carol permission to i-eturn would place the government in a bad light and create sympathy for the errant son who addicted his right to the throne and left Rumania. On the other hand some of the leaders here are of the opinion that with Ferdinand in Paris, Carol, always the King’s favorite son, might induce Ferdinand, especially in his enfeebled state of health, to forgive and forget and re-instate Carol ir dynastic rights.o ing officer was made to the Secre-tayr of State with a recommendation for the returning officer’s removal. This recommendation was, however, not acted upon, the returning officer having undertaken to abstain from partisan pobtitai activity, and undertaking which appears to have been fulfilled, although the returning officer admitted that, after giving it, he marie use of a motor car belonging to one of the candidates for the purpose of the administration of the election.” GERMANY SHIPPING WAR MATERIAL ACROSS BORDER INTO RUSSIA FOR USE OF CHINESE REVOLUTIONISTS Another Big Obstacle in Way of Agreement Between Germany and Allies Concerning Substituting for Inter-Allied Control of Armaments in Germany Direct Jurisdiction Over Them by League of Nations, as Requested by Germany—Germans Are Declared to Be Beginning to Assume an Attitude that They Have Reached Limit of Concessions to Allies and Cannot Realize Why Their Sincere Assurances that They Are Carrying Out Versailles Treaty Are Not Considered Sufficient.G (Associated Press Despatch.) ENEVA, Dec.1 1 .-Infor-mation tliat Germany is permitting the shipment of war material across her border into Russia for use by the revolutionaries in China today was disturbing relations between Germany and the Allied powers. The foreign ministers of the Allies were hesitating to take the responsibility of substituting for inter-AUied control of armaments in Germany direct jurisdiction over them by the League of Nations, as has been requested by Germany. This hesitancy was accentuated when the foreign ministers were advised by the Council of Ambassadors at Paris that the Ambassadors and the German representatives discussing the question of armaments with them still were far part. The fortification at Koenigsburg, in East Prussia, on the Polish frontier, which the Poles and the French consier in the ^nature of a base for an offensive work, and the exportation by Germany of war materials, which it is suspected are reaching China through Russia and aiding the Bolshevization of China and virtually forming a German-Russian-Ghinese collaboration, are said to be the two principal obstaces in the way of an agreement. The Germans are declcared to be beginning to assume an attitude that they have reached the limit of concessions to the Allies and cannot realize why their sincere assurances that they are carrying out the Versailles Treaty are not considered sufficient. It is pointed out in League circles that Dr.Gustav Strcsemann, head of the German delegation here, apparently is meeting with difficulty in obtaining a cessation of the * sending to Russia of war and semi- FIRST TRAIN ON SYDNEY’S $15,000,000 TUBE WAS OPERATED THIS WEEK Another Historic Event in Public Transportation Is Closing of the Steam Tramway Services Years Ago.TTAWA, Dec., 11.—A method whereby voters’ lists for Federal elections would be brought up to date each year instead of the jiresent procedure of compiling new lists each election based on the latest provincial list, is suggested by Col.O.M.Biggar, chief electoral officer, in his report to the House of Commons, which was made public yesterday. The report also favors allowing returning officers to continue in office for the full five years for which they are appointed, instead of the practice of cancelling the appointments of one set of such officials and naming others in their place when a new party comes into power.A number of difficulties now connected with elections would disappear, the chief electoral officer points out.if subordinate election officers were also selected without regard to their political affiliations, in other words, as nearly as may be in equal numbers from - . . , | among the supporters of each of Ambassadors Sent to Washington from Great Britain Did the principal political parties which - " ’ may be expected to have candidates in the field. One of the reasons why the party-in power has been desirous of having’ one of its own supporters as a returning officer is that in case of a tie vote in the constituency, this official would have the casting vote.Such a situation has very seldom happened in this country, but Col.Biggar suggests that if returning officers were allowed to hold office throughout their tory regardless of their States Appointment Of Canadian Minister To Washington Is Outcome Of Practical Needs And Necessities Of The Situation # You should do something about it.The tired feeling that follows a day of hard work or strenuous play is normal. It is a natural fatigue which disappears after a night's rest. But, that tired feeling at the beginning of the day, when you constantly feel worn out and weary without any apparent cause, when your sleep is unrefreshing and you are irritable and easily depressed, is a danger signal warning you that there is something radically wrong.Very often such a condition is the result of a shortage in the body of certain vital mineral substances which the little cells of your bodily tissues utilize in producing the force called vital power which opsrates your bodily machinery. As steam is to the locomotive or electric power to the radio, so is vital power to the intricate machinery of your body.Without vital power your organs could not possibly function. It is when your vital power is low that you feel abnormally tired, irritable and depressed.Normally your blood should derive from the food you eat an adequate supply of all the minerals the little cells require. But it often happens that your blood fails to do this. Then your power-plants—for that i* what these cells really are—failing to receive sufficient fuel, are forced to cut down their production of this necessary vital power. When such a condition arises, you should feed the necessary substances to the blood.WINCARNIS affords a simple and effective way.fMM€k ’A Power Ibr Health Is a preparation of these very substances, scientifically combined with other beneficial ingredients in a form in which they are readily absorbed and quickly carried to your little power-plants.Accordingly, if you arc chronically tired, if you lack that buoyant feeling, that vim and vigour which denote robust health, start taking WINCARNIS to-day.By taking Wincarnis you will render immediately available to your blood, materials that will quickly be utilized by your tiny power-plants in flooding every organ of your body with new life and energy.More than 10,000 physicians have recommended WINCARNIS In 16 ounce bottles At your druggist’s ^ PAGE FOUR.SHERBROOKE DAILY RECORD.SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1926, *?*?*** ?>** * CITY BRIEFLETS * Skating.Band tonight Minto Rink.A.H.Genge, nano Tuner, 194 Quebec Street.Tel.846-W.Dance tonight, Woodard’s Orchestra, at the Elks’ Hall.Adm.55c and ?5c.Sale of fancy and useful articles Plvmouth Church Hall ,Thurs., Dec.leth.Kushner’s Beauty Parlor—Special hair trim, shampoo and marcel wave, all three for $1.00.Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, between 8.30 and 12 a.m.Use the Moonlight Revelers for cour dances and parties.Call 775-1.Parrot Tea Room will open Monday, Dec.13th, at 45 Dufferin Ave.American stamps for sale at the Record Office.Whenever you have a gift to give consider the ‘ desirability of books.Docks are the ideal Christmas g-.t and these are many to choose from at the Rosemary Gift Shop.Regular meeting of King George V Chapter, I.O.D.E., will be held on Tuesdav.Dec.14th, at the home o-Mrs.Wm.Bailey, 2 Winter St., a.3.30 p.m.Full attendance request- Feast of Little Lanterns, a gay operetta, Monday, for Library.Christmas tea, food and fancy sale Church of Advent Hall, Tues., Dec.14th, 3 to 6 p.m.Hostesses, Mrs.G.Wingrove, Mrs.A.Ball.-^rs'T Davis.Mrs.H.C.Wilcox and Mrs.F Saunders.Supper served to Men -Club 6.30 to 8 p.m.Xmas sale of millinery commenc big Monday, Dec.13th.All oui stock Of lovely hats tour prices orJi the lowest S1.9S, velvets, ^ brocades S2.98, $3.98 and $4.98.Beauty parlor in connection, specia ; Mon., Tues, and Wed only marcel; wave 35c, shampoo 3oc.Call lOl-1' Mrs T.C.Hum, 130 Wellington No.ADDITIONAL subscriptions RECEIVED FOR MEMORIAL tablet Mr E W.Farwell, honorary reasurer of the Soldiers’ Monument Honor Roll Memorial Tablet, acknowledges the following rub criptions.which have been received; during the past weejt: x p W.J.Wiggett, $2; Miss L R-Nourse, 81: M.T .$1; Rev.R.SI ; Previously acknov.*ed0wd.$643.Total: $648.____ SUNDAY AT ST.ANDREW’S The morning and evening diets of public worship in St.Andrew s Presbyterian Church will be conducted by the Rev.Alfred Bright, minister. The subject of the morn-ins =ermon wilV be “How to know the will of God”.At the evening service, the fourth message m the.series of sermons on the Ten Corn-mandments will be delivered, namely, “The Right Use of the Lords DUhe choir will render the following anthems, “Comes at Times a S+' ness” tWoodwark) and "Now the Day is Over” (Marks).A quartette consisting of the Misses L.and M.Lothrop and Messrs.>• m.Scott and J.G.Watson will smg, ‘¦Some Blessed Day” (Kevin). The Church School will gather at 2.30 p.m., in the Church Ha., end the Primary Department meets in the same place at 10.45 a.m.THIRD SERIES OF ADVENT SERMONS AT PLYMOUTH CHURCH At Plymouth Church on Sunday morning! A wave of passionate admiration for Royalty is sweeping the United States and the constitution is in grave danger. The time has anparently come for some democratic Sherîôck Holmes to investigate the purpose of Sam Hill's great Italian castle at Maryhill in the state of Washington, visited by Queen Marie. Is it part of a great plot to popularize royalty and prepare the country for King Will (Rogers) or King Henry (Ford)?Through the exercise of some mysterious influence.at any rate.Sam Hill obtained a promise of a visit from the King of Belgium, which, however, was never made. Not abashed, Hill paid for a visit to the United States by Marshal Joffre of France. And his role as host to royalty was satisfied recently by Queen Marie.Royalty worship has certainly reached the comic heights and depths.Hill, according to the news despatches, threatened during an altercation to slap the face of one of the Queen's aides.Every American cvho had the least chance of getting a sight of the Rumanian queen was practising “Say Queen!” with tho correct persuasive accent, “while those who don't think they can spare the time are sedu- ously eating buckwheat cakes (with maple syrup) at the exact time the queen eats them.” according to the English writer’s skit.“Loud speakers." he says, “broadcast the time at which she begins to chew', and millions of jaws move simultaneously, v'hile millions of buckwheat cakes shrink and vanish.” For some time now.it has been noticed that while the prominent figures of the United States still affect the plainest democratic raiment, the widest latitude is permitted to the members of their retinue who more and more bedeck themselves in brass buttons and bright raiment.Pageants prevail.“On the word of an ‘eminent senator,’ whoso name is withheld for the present, the people of the United States are so stirred by this royal visit that they are fed up with being a republic. They W'an.a king of (including Four Corne'-s.Texas), have other ideas as to the fittest man in the Grate American Nation for the job.” For instance Governor A!.Smith would have a great backing In New York state, which might possibly want to estao- lish a separate kingdom, apparently 'come back.’ “B"t Ring has settled the possibility of his candidature by declining to stand. He has had no experience, he tells the Sunday Chronicle, and now that he has given up cow-punching and settled In England he has no longing for the cares of Kingship. He might have stood, but when he advertised for a king job in Europe, so as to get some training till the States are ready for him, there didn’t seem to be any vacancies for a healthy infant of forty or so.And if he went into it blind, he’d probably muss the show.“Of course, there is Coolidge—very much there. But, so far as he is concerned.America feels that he has got too used to prohibition in his presidential term, and if they made a king of him he might start prohibiting ail sorts of things.Divorce, for instance, and chewing gum, and machine-guns for the Chicago gangsters—and then where would the United States be?No, not Coolidge. He might have plenty of dignity, but they want snap with their dig.“Philadelphia is solid for Gene Tunney as wlelder of the sceptre. They have had a good view of the sort of wielding he can do without one.and they hand him the glad mitt unanimously. He has presence and punch, both of which are requisite. And as for snap.well, look, says Philadelphia, at the way he snapped poor old Dempsey round the ring.“Yes.sir.Gene's the goods.Put him on a throne and let him just wave that left of his, and the whole of u,a loyal subjects wouldn't merely bow. They'd dodge, sharp.“But all Europe, the unhappy Queen Nathalie of Serbia has retired to the cold stone cells of a Catholic convent in a side street of the Paris Latin quarter.Unfortunate in her love affairs, as she was In her political and family life, Queen Nathalie lives wholly cut off from the world of to-day, and forgotten by the people over whom she ruled as wife of Milan, king of the Serbs, nearly a half century ago.A bent, old woman, dressed in the simplest of black clothes, is often seen wandering through the narrow thoroughfares of the quarter.Although locking herself in her cell every night and taking her frugal meals at the convent, Nathalie still keeps the right to take her dally walk through Paris. There Is nothing regal about her bearing now.Sorrow has creased her face.Div creed while yet queen, she was reconciled with Milan after his abdication had been forced upon him in 1889.She saw her son, Alexandre, who succeeded Milan to the throne, assassinated, together with -his wife, Queen Draga, in May.1903.With Alexandre, the last male in line, tho house of Obrenovitch lost power to the house of Kara-Georgevitch, reigning in Yugo-Slavla to-day.Nathalie left Serbia where her life had been one of continuous sorrow.Site settled in France, Unfortunate in Her Love Affairs— Gamblers Reign in Her Castle—Her Immense Fortune Lies in a Bank choosing a place along the Basque coast overlooking the Atlantic.Biarritz, a mile away, was then only a pretty fishing port. There she built her palace, the Villa Sacchino.and there she lived and enjoyed her first real happiness. But the war took away much ot her fortune, beyond her immense real estate holdings, hundreds of acres of parked land just at the edge of Biarritz. For millions of francs she parted with her castle. Its name was changed to the Pavilion Royal, electric lights were strung under the trees, a glass dancing floor, lighted from underneath, was built in the state dining-room, and Harry Pilcer.known to stage folk of two continents, was called in as master of jazz.Recently the great salons were converted into gambling rooms, with 30 tables for baccarat and 10 for boule. The Pavilion Royal is to-d,,y a rival of Monte Carlo and of Deauville and its tables earn annually a hundred million fr.incs.But Nathalie was not foresighted enough to retain an interest in her castle and farm ou: the gambling rights as did the Prince of Monaco.V bile Monte Carlo and Monaco live from the royalties of the gambling tables, and the Prince of Monaco gets a real princely living from the baccarat rooms, Nathalie preferred to take her millions and leave Sacchino.Paris was a disappointment to her.for while she was wealthy In money, of friends she had none. The lonesomeness of the great city frightened her.and a short time ago she rapped at the heavy wooden door of the convent, and asked to be taken in.Her immense fortune lies in a bank, its earnings being used to help in the work ot the Sisters of Charity. Her jewels lie locked there regularly when the royal family is in residence, were delayed one day owing to some mishap.A newly-married woman guest, not knowing tills, asked when the pipers were going to begin.and the duchess volunteered to find out.Wee if the pipers have come yet," she said to a footman, who hailed from London.Presently the man returned and said: my lady, no morning papers get here until mid household. The late queen ran the court on German lines, and was extremely severe She would never allow the maids of honor to sit In her presence.Gladstone made himself unpopular by criticizing this custom when he was once at court: — “After dinner the statesman sat next to Queen Victoria in the spacious green salon.Half-a-dozen of the senior ladies of the court sat In chairs ranged in a semicircle behind her majesty, and behind them stood the maids of honor and equerries in waiting.“During a pause in the conversation between her majesty and the then prime minister, the latter said to the queen: — “ T feel somewhat embarrassed, your majesty, at seeing those young ladies standing while I am seated.’ “ 'You need not feel embarrassed,’ replied her majesty, rather severely.‘It is the rule of the court that they shall stand In the presence of their sovereign.’ “ T hope your majesty will pardon me for saying that tt is a rule I wish your majesty could see your way to alter,’ replied Mr.Gladstone, bluntly.“Her majesty made no reply, but so angry was she that, a, few minutes later, she rose from her chair and, giving the prime minister the stiffest of bows, retired for the night, accompanied by her mistress of the robes, the then Duchess of Roxburghe, and her ladies of the bedchamber.“The next morning Mr.Gladstone left Wind-sot without seeing the queen.” TO have boxed with the Prince of Wales, American multi-millionaires, famous explorers, and a round half-dozen world’* champions is the the number of miles covered; a rowing machine; and the usual rings, punch-balls, and so on.“The Prince of Wales was the one who interested me most,” George said, when I got him to talk, no easy matter, for he is the soul of modesty.“He boxed with me every morning during his last trip to New York.He has quite a good style, but delights to ‘have a go’ with his right, rather
