St.Opp.Clement Theatre #******-*?^*?**44****#44*4*44*4************* ~ Mrs.F.W.Read Lectured to Children Thursday.THE EXHIBITION IS THE MOST COMPLETE EVER SEEN IN THIS CITY.Thursday afternoon the Oriental Exhibition and Missionary Institute, for which great perparations have been made and which has been long in contemplation, opened very auspicial-ly in the Lecture Hall of Plymouth Congregational Church, which had been turned for the time being into a veritable museum. An immense number of children from the Sunday School, the Central, North Ward, and East Sherbrooke Schools assembled, the large room being literally packed to the doors.Every coigne of vantage was occupied, even the stairs being crowded to the uttermost step, and the spectacle of so many bright interested faces, was both a charming and remarkable one.A lecture, or rather an informal talk was given to the children by-Mrs.F.W.Read, who for ten years had lived and worked with her husband in West Central Africa, accompanied by views representing the every day life, the occupations, dwellings, etc., of the native people.Mrs.Read is a pleasing and magnetic speaker and held the spellbound attention of her youthful audience as well as those of larger growth from the beginning to the end of her address.A familiar hymn was sung in the native language, and as the words were not immusical or difficult, the children soon learned the chorus and joined in it lustily. To crown all, Mrs.Read had with her a couple of African children’s costumes and in these she arrayed two young people from the audience, to the great delight of their companions. The exhibition itself, is probably the most complete and certainly the most interesting ever brought together in this city, and perhaps in the Province.Five booths were arranged around the room, the first the African booth being in charge of Mrs.Read, Miss Ransenhousan, Miss Eva Hall and Miss Idonea Noursc. The Indian booth came next, with Mrs.T.E.Read and Miss Mary Hubbard in attendance in very pretty Eastern costumes. At the Japanese booth with its huge umbrella, and blossoming cherry tree, Mrs.A.M.Sangster, Mrs.Edward Hall, Miss Sara Hall and Miss TOMORROW’S MEETING AT THE Florence Davidson presided in Japan Y.M.C.A.Commencing tomorrow evening a new feature will he added to the already popular Sunday evening song service at the Young Men’s Christian Association.Arrangements have been made ior a splendid series of stereopticon views on the life of Christ entitled ‘‘Footsteps of Jesus.” The first set of slides called ‘‘Memories of Bethlehem” relates to the infancy of Jesus, embracing those incidents which cluster around Bethlehem and which led up to or were coincident with the Advent. All men are heartily invited to spend an informal hour in the Association parlors, after Church on Sunday evenings.MISSIONARY ENTERTAINMENT.A very successful missionary entertainment was held
