[" Sherbrooke Daily Record: Established 1897 SHERBROOKE, QUE., THURSDAY.MARCH 28, 1912 ONE CENT Mill BILL JEAVED.As Kesult Royal Asseot Will Not be Given Before Friday.HITCH IN WORDING OF GOVERNMENT AMENDMENT CAUSE OF DELAY.London, March 28.—The House of Lords last night passed the second reading of the Minimum Wage Bill without division.During the course of the debate Lord Lansdowne said that the Opposition would not amend the bill or delay its passage, but the ministry must accept full responsibility for it.Nobody but the Government and their supporters, he added, had a good word for the bill, which failed to satisfy either of the disputants.Other Opposition speakers denounced the bill in a similar strain.Owing to some hitch in the wording of a Government amendment and its failure to suit both sides of the House, the Marquis of Crewe announced that the committee stage would be postponed until Thursday, This will result in delaying the royal assent until Friday. The m , serious outbreak since the strike began occurred yesterday at Cannock, Staffordshire, where several thousand strikers, accompanied by hundreds of women, raided a collier”- in which eighty men were working. They stoned and overpowered the small force of police on guard, setting fire to two buildings ami wrecking others. The rioting continued for several hours, until large reinforcements of police arrived and scattered the rioters by baton charges.10,000 RETURN IN WARWICKSHIRE.Warwickshire’s 10,000 miners, who were the last to quit work, will be the first to resume.Their executive last night sent a notice to all tbe miners’ lodges, stating that the owners agree to the same minimum wages as when work ceased, and authorizing the men to resume without waiting for a ballot and announcing also that tbe district board will be constituted and will meet to-morrow to discuss the wage question. Thus, with those who have already resumed work in North Wales and Lancashire, there will probably be 13,000 men working in the mines tomorrow. The latest reports from almost all the mining centres, with tbe exception of South Wales, indicate that the men are anxious to get back to work, although in many cases they have decided to await the result of a meeting of the miners’ council which is to be held on Saturday.TROOPS HELD READY.Orders were issued at Aldershot last night for all the troops, numbering 10,000, to be prepared to move at any moment into the colliery districts.Troop trains are being held in readiness.Five hundred troops lelt Lichfield for Cannock, where a serious riot occurred yesterday afternoon, and a detachment of infantry is quartered at Bryninalt, where trouble is expected between union and non-union men.The railway managers have decided , to suspend all freight traffic except perishable goods from April 3 until April 9.COAL OWNERS GIVE IN.London, March 28.-The Bntlsh coal owners, after a prolonged meeting yesterday afternoon, resolved to accept the minimum wage bill, m s means that all the mines will be opened to the men as soon as they desire to return to work.TERRIBLE DISTRESS EVERYWHERE.London, March 28.-Trouble is feared in Scotland, where many me have already returned to thePitsaU'i others are anxious to hdlow thc example. In Scotland at many of the collieries the hewers of coal cm ploy their own laborers, whom they 81° 25S be ^established the their profits consul- GRANT TO VETERANS l$_ .; This was General Opinion Express> ed By Members In Commons.WILL NOT BE EXTENDED TO THE WIDOWS OF DOMINION’S DEFENDERS.Ottawa, March 28.—That the sum of S100 is totally inadequate as a renumeration /or the services of the men who took up arms in defence of Canada in 1S66 and l^TO, as proposed in the bill in the Minister of Militia, was the general opinion expressed when the bill was in Commons last evening. Some flashes of humor enlivened the discussion.Col.Hughes, in explaining that many difficulties stood in the way cf extending the grant to widows of veterans, told of one veteran who had three wives and had families by them all.“How many widows would be left?’’' inquired F.B.Carvell (Carlton N.B.) While he thought the amount of ^100 too small, Mr.Carvell thought that the men who had not thought enough of Canada to remain in Canada should not get the grant. In answer to this contention, Col.Hughes said that there were many Canadians resident in Chicago and elsewhere in the United States who had chartered special trains and came back to fight for Canada. If any men had made sacrifices these men had, and they should get the grant.Wm.Thoburn (N.Lanark) thought the veterans should have the interest on the $100 from 18(ï6.Dr.Steele (S.Perth) declared that if Canada could not extend this grant to the widows of the men who took up arms we should be acting very penuriously.“My heart strings were almost torn asunder when I had to bring in a bill recognizing the widows,” said the Minister of Militia. The point was, however, that most of the men were unmarried at the time they were called out. What right had women who married these men years after .to get the grant ?Moreover some of these men had been married two or three times.J.H.Sinclair (Guysbcro)—“Does the hon.minister intend to sav that they left two or three widows?’.Col.Hughes denied the insinuation.“It is to the admiralty, not to the army, you have to go for that,’’ he said.“A sailor has a girl in every port, but the soldier is true to one,” and the gallant minister of militia laid his hand on his heart to emphasize his statement.HE MEGANTIG u AND GOOD STREETS.Question of Borrowing $40,000 for Ibis work Discussed.AGITATION HAS AGAIN BROKEN OUT TO HAVE A PUBLIC MARKET.Lake Megantic, March 27.—(Special)—At a special meeting of the Town Council two matters of much public interest were brought forward and discussed, but nothing definite was decided in either case, and they were carried over for further discussion and action. One of these was the question of good streets and the borrowing of $40,000 for the purpose. It appears that the Council are in favor of the project, hut before it can be accomplished a by-law will have to be drafted at a further meeting or meetings of the Council will have to be held to decide the best methods to be adopted, and then passed by the ratepayers. The other question was In connection with the establishment of a public market, which is urgently needed in town, but which will call for a good deal of discussion before a derision can he arrived at.This matter has been in abeyance for some years, but the agitation has recently been renewed. These two questions, with some minor matters, took up the whole evening, and the meeting was adjourned.WM CLK {5,000 FOK HOMO'S DEM.J.B Bouchard was Killed by G.T.R.Train at Richmond ALLEGED THAT ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED THROUGH NEGLIGENCE OF COMPANY’S March 28.—It now seems somewhat doubtful that the Legisla tare will prorogue this week. The order paper still figures with more than eighty items, while the os timates are not nearly all voted yet, and still the Opposition obstruct and move amendments each time a motion is made to go into supply.Invitations have been issued for the prorogation ceremonies, but no date is mentioned, and from the present outlook next Wednesday, the 4th of April, seems the most probable. When a motion was made to go in to supply in the Legislature, Mr.Her natd, member for Shefford County, made an amendment against the commission appointed to propose rules for the regulating of running waters, on the ground that the members of the Commons were overpaid, and that the same should be reduced. After a rather stormy discussion, in which the Premier and Hon.Mr.Paient defended the Commission, the amendment was defeated on a division of 49 to 12, Messrs.Jean Provost and Pennington voting with the Government.WHO and this action also has been taken throughout the provinces, so that the children may be fed regularly. In South Wales want and hunger prevail everywhere. At Cardiff, Newport ami Swansea, all the dockers are destitute and the sailors who have been discharged from their idle ships have mined the ranks of those needing assistance. The strike is now getting a grip on the cotton trade, and several mills in Lancashire have been closed. In Oldham, the greatest SÏ POINT AT ISSUE IS AS TO WILL PAY FOR RECONSTRUCTION.Quebec, March 28.—The complaint of the Quebec Central Railway against the Bell Asbestos Company in regard to overhead bridges at Thet ford Mines was commenced before the Public Utilities Commission yesterday and adjourned in order to get a report of the Commission’s engineer as to the state of things in Thetford. The railway was represented by Messrs.Fergus Murphy and J.H.Walsh, and the Bell Company by Mr.White and Hon.Geo.Smith.Explanations were given regarding the complaint, the Q.C.H.complaining that the bridge at Thetford Mines is too low. This the Bell Company admit, but the contention now is as to who will pay for the reconstruction of the bridge. The Bell people claim that formerly the bridge was high enough hut the heights of cars has been increased. At present the cars of the Bell Company run over the bridge by gravity, and if the bridge is altered the Bell Company ill have to remodel its whole plant.Suit Must Fit Perfectly or Customer Need Not P&y in ^Fuil.SUCH WAS THE DECISION HANDED DOWN BY FIRST JURY OF WOMEN EMPANELLED IE while in other districts the undesirable features of the separate school system are emphasized by bi-lingual complications. Not only is the system expensive and inefficient, but it has no advantages in its favor that in any fair measure compensate for its disadvantages. It may be claimed for separate schools that they afford an opportunity to give denominational religious instructions. But even this one point in its favor is open to criticism, when viewed from the standpoint of all concerned. There are different Christian bodies involved, the rights of which should be respected, and there are no good reasons why privileges should be extended to some that are withheld from others. The Anglican is no more a Methodist, a Baptist or a ( oonite-Mormon than he is a Roman Catholic; the Presbyterian, while l.r may be more closely allied to soi.by sentiment and doctrine, than te others, claims an iden- , HIS MASTEIfScVOICE VICTOR RECORDS OUT TO-DAY \\ ictor Military Band Pryor’s Band \\da Jones .Peerless Quartet Orpheus Quartet Orpheus Quartet A FEW GEMS from the APRIL UST ia inlh double-faced 90c FOR THE TWO SELECTIONS 17044—Ragtime Violin—Turkey Trot Surprise Medley Overture.17052—Bring Back My Lovin' Man .Hear the Pickaninny Band.17053—The Long Day Ci Ho : Jolly Jenkin .A new record by a famous Canadian ’Cellist, Rosario Bourdon.12 inches—Price ¥1.2.5.31S57—Widmnng .'Cello Solo A New Record of .the Most Famous of all Operatic Selections, 96201—Lucia — Chi mi frena — Sextette.Sung by Caruso, Tetrazzini, Amato.Journet.Jacoby, Bada.Caruso's Second English Ballad.37095—Love is Mine. The great Canadian Tenor Edmond Clement sings 64233—Jocelyn .Berceuse Don't Mies the wonderful Victor Puzzle record.121000—Six Selections on one disc .¥1.00 Hear these records to-day at your dealers.BEKLÎNER GRAM O PHONE CO.Ltd.MONTREAL.Buy Vider Records and Instruments at 11 King Street J.W.McEEE’S Sherbrooke, Que H.C.WILSON § SONS, Ltd.VICTOR MUSIC PARLORS, Sherbrooke.WAS THE GARDEN OF EDEN IN MISSOURI?We have all that "show me' in *inct which must have romc from pome i oirauon unrestor—the prenumpt tor, is.that it ¦ a me from Adam.Let ANTI-DtfHT show you how it.restores your carpers, Veeps dust down.Mils dis>;A>u germa.ANTX-WJBT lias a sweet, wholesome odor that makes sweeping a pleasure.ANTI-WST IK DEATH TO MOTHS AND MICROBES.35c and 15c Nil - DUS ONCE YOU TRY IT - YOU'LL ALWAYS BUY IT THE SAPHO MANUFACTURING CO, LIMITED Th(; to give separate schools to one body, and not to others, is to show unwise discrimination and weaken our educational efforts.Uut to have a good public school system, in which all efforts would be united in giving a sound secular education, with ample provision for time and place, in which all would receive their own religious instructions, would be to give equal rights to all, and eliminate |the deplorable conditions now existing in mixed rural communities. The English and the French of the rising generation would learn more of each others language, and would find, in each other, many good qualities that are frequently not recognized. It would then be a more difficult matter to raise race cries effectively, and a sounder national spirit would be developed.MACHINE SHOPS FOR LYSTER.The material is being collected for machine shop to be built this spring at Lyster. The need of such a shop is recognized, now that the Quebec Eastern Railway shop will have less time to attend to custom work.General machine shop work will be undertaken, such as can be done with a medium sized gasoline engine power, with the intention of adding a foundry and putting in heavier machinery later. Now that the matter is being taken up it would appear to be a mistake not to give the enterprise sufficient financial support from the first to secure success.Lyster has now reached the stage when its requirements are worthy of consideration. For a number of years it has been the busiest shipping point on the Grand Trunk between Richmond and Levis; and now that the Quebec Eastern is tn be extended its importance as the headquarters of that railway will he still more marked, at least until the construction is completed.WINTER CONTINUED.From the first day of January to the present we have had, with the exception of a few days, a steady cold winter, and our roads are as good noR as at any time this season.Though approaching the end of March, there has scarcely been a suggestion of sugar-making, or of our winter roads breaking up, and no one seems to be ready for the changes that spring brings. There is hauling to be done, and all kinds of work to be attended to before we are ready for spring roads.Still men, who find the winters too short for their work, complain of their awful length. While some would suggest improvements, it is just possible that our Quebec winters suit our rquirements as well as any that we would devise.OUR MORMONS.Sherbrooke may be able to record the advent of its Mormon missionaries, but Megantic can boast not only of Mormon missionaries, but of Mormon converts, who have ro farther use for the faith of their forefathers who lived in darkness and have gone to hell. Our Latter-Day Saints have not yet entirely mastered Joseph Smith's Theology, but they have been enabled to see everything in a new light. Those who do not feel that their thirst for knowledge has been satisfied find food for thought in the study- of the article on ‘‘Mormons” in the ‘Encyclopaedia Britannica.Ifwy ACRE FARM AND BUILDINGS I'M/ fur sale or rent.Reasonable terms.Lot 5.range 7.Township of Inverness.Address.Mrs.John Morrow, Pointbriand, Thetford, Que.ASSOCIATED BOARDS OF TRADE.Megantic was well represented by the delegates from Thetford Mines ami Black Lake that went to Quebec, last week, as representatives of the Eastern Townships Associated Boards of Trade. It should not be forgotten that Megantic County is a part of the Eastern Townships and in the advertising scheme to secure desirable settlers our County Council should take an active part.We need good settlers, and there are those who would make good settlers, who need a home in the Eastern Town-ehips.killiIÏdIëT OUTJ SEASON.A K nnebsc Road, Megantic Co., Correspondent Appeals for Aid To Suppress Slaughter.SECTION OF MEGANTIC COUNTY IS HUNTING GROUND FOR MANY HUNTERS.Our Kennebec Road, Megantic County, correspondent writes : "The snow has got quite hard as a result of the cold weather following the thaw and affords an opportunity for poachers to violate the game laws.A few days ago two unknown men on their snowshoes, with their dog, were out deer-hunting and hod one run down so far that soon they would have had him had not some bettei law-abiding citizens come to his rescue and saved his life.Tile poachers very reluctantly gave up the chase in preference to running the risk of having to pay the fine."There should be a game warden in this vicinity, wtio would be constantly on the ground, for this is the main I hunting ground, not only for the sin j rounding country and villages, hut, ! also for hunfers from Beauceville, Valley Junction, Quebec, Sherbrooke' and other centres during the open I season. It is too bad that deer chould be killed late in the winter and in spring when they are only skin and hone, or when their flesh is not fit for use and their hides worthless! "Is there not an association in your city whose obfect is to have the mye laws obeyed ?and who would h ive some influence with the Government to have game wardens appointed where needed 9 If so, your correspondent.wouii he elad to assn1, in reeommendlng a trustworthv pe.-j .n for the office.” Headquarters for : Clothing Latest Spring Styles Now in Stock. Our Assortment is without question the Largest and Most Complete in the City PRICES VERY REASONABLE.Every parent who has lived in Sherbrooke for any length of time knows that BOUCHER, LACROIX & FISETTE carry the largest stock of BOYS’ CLOTHING in the city. They also know that the name and reputation of the firm stand bahind every suit they sell, READ ABOUT THESE SUITS !
