[" Sherbrooke Daily Record.Batablighed 1897 SHERBROOKE, QUE., SATURDAY, AUGUST 2 1913.ONS OINT PEME'PIIELIiMllES WILL BE SIGNED WITHIN FIVE DAVS Bulgarian Premier Says that War May be Considered Finished.Optimistic View of the Balkan Situation.The Settlement of Macedonian Question is Not Unsurmountable.Report Denied that Russia Intended Taking Action Against Turkey.St.Petersburg, Aug.2.—(Special) —Denial is given to the sensational reports spread abroad that the Russian Government has decided to take warlike steps against Turkey.It was stated that Russia was determined to avoid isolated action and that the present trend of events was rather in favor of rapproaching with Austria.OPTIMISTIC VIEW OF SITUATION.London, Aug.2.—(Special)— The Daily Chronicle Vienna correspondent wires: “Optimistic though unconfirmed news reaches me today on the Balkan situation.Mr.Radostavoff, Bulgarian Premier declared war may be considered finished, and that there is every prospect that peace preliminaries will be signed within five days.“The settlement of.the Macedonian question would cause no insurmountable difficulties, the powers having reserved for themselves the final decision."As regards the attitude of Turkey it is asserted that while military party at Constantinople persistently maintain that Turkey will retire from Adrianople only if over-whelmed by force.Compensations are indicated by Porte which would cause it to consider retreat.” BULGARIA WILL GAIN LITTLE.London, August 2.—The allies in their demands presented to the peace conference yesterday proposed the establishment of a frontier standing east from the Struma River, running midway through Rumelia, and reaching the Aegean Sea sixteen miles west of Dedeagatch.This would leave Bulgaria a coast line on the Aegean Sea of less than thirty miles.If these drastic terms are accepted Bulgaria will issue from two wars a little larger than when she entered into them, but she will have to abandon a large amount of territory to Roumania.In addition, the allies maintain their demand for an indemnity.It is probable that the negotiations will be protracted and that the armistice of five days will be renewed.No objection is likely to be raised to its renewal, for it seems evident that both the Servians and the Greeks have fought themselves to a standstill.GREAT BRITAIN GIVR A REASON Board of Trade Says Man-ËL ufacturers Would Not Go To Exposition REPORT DENIED THAT CAUSE IS DUE TO THE PANAMA CANAL CONTROVERSY.London, Saturday, August 2.— No little dissatisfaction, not to say consternation, has been caused in England by the news that the British Government’s decision not to participate in the Panama Pacific exposition is regarded in America as the direct outcome of British resentment over the controversy as to the interpretation of the Panama Canal Act.The Board of Trade has promptly come out with a denial that there is any connection between the two things, but in many quarters the reasons assigned for non-participation are considered poor excuses.The Board of Trade says that the alleged' boycott is due simply and solely to the fact that the exhibition department of the board found, after inquiries, that it was impossible to induce a sufficient number of manufacturers to incur the cost of exhibition.Manufacturers held that while in certain cases, such as the Ghent exhibition, the commercial return from the display of cotton spinning and weaving machinery had been satisfactory, nothing of the kind was to be hoped for from any exhibit in San Francisco, where British trade was relatively small.STRUGGLE WILL l RENEWED Dr.Sun Yat Sen Says That the Southerners Are Undaunted hd rat JN MCO Secretary Bryan Says United States Not Pressed For Action FELIX DIAZ HAS CHANGED HIS MIND AND MAY NOT GO TO JAPAN.Washington, Aug.2.—After a conference with President Wilson yesterday Secretary Bryan declared that the United States was in no way being pressed for action in Mexico, and issued the following statement: “The statement which appeared in some of the morning papers to the effect that European Governments are bringing pressure to bear on the United States to compel aggressive action in Mexico is entirely without foundation.” FELIX DIAZ CHANGES HIS MIND.Los Angeles, Cal., Aug.2.— Felix Diaz, candidate for President of Mexico, who arrived here Wednesday, persumably on the way as special Mexican envoy to Japan, said yesterday that he might not go to Japan.1 Certain circumstances have developed,” he explained, “that make it impossible now to say what I shall do.I do not know where I am going.” General Diaz made the statement after he had received a cable message from the City of Mexico.BUILDING IN EMPLOYEES ON I.G.R.GET INCREASE CALL OFF AFRICAN STRIKE.Johannesburg, Aug.2—The Trades Federation has called off the proposed general the leaders of the southern rebellion, yesterday declared that the re-occupation of the city of Nanking by Government forces was only temporary.The spirit of the southerners1, he affirmed, is undaunted and they hope to renew the struggle when arrangements with Kwang-Tung and other southern provinces have been completed.Dr.Sun Yat Sen left Shanghai last night for Hong Kong, where he will personally make an appeal for further support in his campaign to overthrow Provisional President Yuan Shai Kai.for crimes which the southern leader claims have been committed by the president—namely, the illegal execution of military officers, the assassination of the Nationalist leader, Gen.Sung Chiao-Jen, the issuing of unconstitutional mandates and the enacting of laws without consulting Parliament.HEARD.Exe—Its too bad Jenks “fell down” he was getting along so splend dly.Wye—Ah, well, Jenks isn’t the first man who stubbed his toe on the Practically Granted INCREASE WILL DATE FROM 31ST MARCH LAST—2,000 AFFECTED.Halifax, N.S., August 2.—An Ottawa despatch to the Herald, announces that the men of the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway employees on the Intercolonial Railway, who have been asking for an increase in wages, were notified yesterday by the General manager of the Government system that their demand will be practically acceded to.It became known last night, says the despatch, that a letter to this effect had been addressed by the management of the railway t'o A.H.Mosher, Halifax, the head of the Brotherhood which includes the men interested.The increase, equal to about ten per cent., will aggregate $120,000 a year and applies to some 2,000 employees.Not only is this increase granted, but it is to date hack to March 31st, at which date the old board of management had offered increases and in many instances the new schedule shows a considerable advance over the increase then proposed.As regards the confidential clerks and stenographers they also will be given an increase fully in line with that granted to the other men affected.Many New IPiibilc Buildings Aud Houses Recently Erected ADDITIONS AND ALTERATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO VARI-OUR PROPERTIES IN THE CITY.Many new public buildings and houses have recently been ereçted in Sherbrooke; extensive improvements, additions and alterations have been made to various properties, and the erection of new buildings is still proceeding.Among those just finished or nearly completed may be mentioned the fine new church of St Patrick, situated at the corner of Gordon and King streets; the new building of the Bank of Montreal, on Wellington street; the palatial new offices of the Quebec Central Railway on Strathcona Square, the new Armory near the old Court House.In every quarter of the city the Ma Conscience!—A Scotsman and a Welshman once had to fight a duel.That they might have the better chance of missing one another it was decided they were to fight in a dark room.On the appointed time both entered the prepared apartment.Shortly one pistol shot was heard, anda moment later the Scotsman rushed out of the room.“Ma conscience!” he cried, "I fired up the chimney, an’, hang me, if I didna’ bring doun the Welshman!” construction of new houses is rapidly advancing, and as scarcely a vacant dwelling can be found in any ward, these increased building operations must be regarded as a sign of the times in evidencing the industrial prosperity and enlarged commercial activities of the city.In East Sherbrooke, important additions are being made to the East Sherbrooke Hotel; a large brick tenement house of three storeys is being built on Bridge street; on Murray street a self-contained brick dwelling is nearly finished, and other houses are in course of construction on Council street and the end of First avenue.The Academie Ste.Marie, near the St.Jean Baptiste Church, will be a handsome structure when completed.The West and South Wards are not behind the East in taking their part in the present building enterprise, and encroachments on the woods have been made for this purpose.At the corner of Westmount avenue, beyond the Sacred Heart Hospital on Belvi-dere street, a large residence is partly built; at the corner of King George avenue a long ter’ace is practically ready for occupation, and on this avenue some tenements in a new building are already occupied.On Sherbrooke street and Short street other new houses are appearing.Two houses on Galt street, three on St.Louis street and two on Larocque street may be expected to be ready during the present month.On the other side of the city, new residences are showing up on Ontario street and Victoria street, and a long terrace along the Magog River bank, off Liverpool street, is another addition to that part of the city.Coming towards the centre of the city, the new moving picture theatre on King street is rapidly approaching completion, and a large brick tenement house on St.Gabriel street and a brick house on Brooks street will no doubt be finished in a short time.The above does not pretend to embrace the whole of the buildings now jin course of erection, hut it gives some idea of what is going on in this direction, and is also an indication that Sherbrooke, rich in natural beauty and resources, bids fair to become a favorite residential as well as an important commercial centre.(mil HID TO TOMf Hill BACK Would not Allow Him to Enter Dominion Because Hewas Cripple WAS get a °l1g on'____________ - bankment and other places show that r while those of the Labor party were well attended and orderly those conducted by Socialist leaders are neither popular nor well behaved, and have recently been abandoned altogether.In speaking of this state of affairs, J.W.Urv/in, secretary of the Anti-Socialist Union of Great Britain, said : “The slump in Socialism has been caused because they have been going about for years preaching revolutionary doctrines and telling fairy tales to the workingmen, and how their arguments are being met and faced, and their doctrines exposed.From many parts of the country have come evidences of the refusal of the people | to believe Socialism any longer.At Portsmouth four years ago the speakers of this union were met with the strongest and most violent opposition.I myself was hurled from the platform once and badly handled.“Today the workingmen at the docks come to oifr meetings.At Wimbledon there used to be three Socialist parties.They had a hall for their meetings during the week.That hall now belongs to the Anti-Socialist societies.The Socialists were driven off the Broadway, where they held their meetings, and last Christmas they gave up the premises.We entered into possession the next day.“Further evidence of the break-up of the Socialist- organization is shown by the failure of the various branches to amalgamate, though invited to do so.There was the Socialist Democratic Party, the Socialist Party of Great Britain, the Fabian Society, the Independent Labor Party and the so-called Christian Socialists."Two years ago an attempt was made to bring them all together under the one banner of the British Socialist Party.But the comrades could not agree, and the only result was that the Social Democratic Party ceased to exist.The British Socialist party have held two conferences, but there is more dissatisfaction among them and the Fabians and the Independent Labor Party have refused to join them.” TKiaks Swearing Ail Right Providing the provocation equals the offence of Jones stepping on Smith’s corns.Far better to use Putnam’s Corn Extractor ;—it does cure corns and warts in one day without pain.Try ’Putnam’s,” free from acids, and painless, price 25c.at all dealers.SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES TRAFALGAR INSTITUTE (Affiliated to McGill University.) 83 SIMPSON STREET, MONTREAL.For the Higher Education of Young Women, with Preparatory Department for Girls, under 13 years of age.President—Rev.James Barclay, D.U.LL.i).; Mrs.Alex MacLeay, Jr., and her guests from Kansas, at the Nicolet Lakes, camping.8AWYERVILLE (Another Correspondent) Mrs.Ellen Alden of Cookshire, vis iting at Mrs, Lyman Bowker’s re cently.Mr.Stephen Jordan, who has sold his home in Hawyerville, has gone to hoard at Mr.Lyman liowker’s for a while.Mr.and Mrs.8.C.Lebourveau of Coaticook anh Mr.and Mrs, A.I.Harvey, of Flanders, were visiting at Mr.I,, j.liowker’s, Monday.BARNSTON.Mr.and Mrs.Eugene Hamm from San Diego, Cal., visiting at his mother’.;, Mrs.John Wright, for a few days.CASTLEBAR.Arrivals and departures include : Mr.Frank Leet of Grant’s Pass, Oregon, pleasantly surprised his brother, Mr.E.M.Leet on Wednesday and is enjoying a few days at his old to home;
