CLEAN UP CITY LOT.Mayor Hebert presided at the adjourned council meeting last night and there was a ,ull attendance oi the aldermen.The mayor opened the proceedings by stating that the first matter for consideration was the appointment of a comptroller, and as two motions, one for the appointment of Mr.E.C.Gatien and the other in favor of Alderman Brault, were before the last meeting when the adjournment took, place, they would be taken as the first business, and any other applications could be taken after if necessary.This form of procedure did not meet with the approval of several of the aldermen and Aid.Forest moved : “That inasmuch as there exists a difference of opinion as to the appointment of one of the two candidates, and owing to the importance of the question under debate, the matter be adjourned to a meeting to be'held on the 11th inst., so as to permit the members of the council and the citizens who are directly interested in the matter to gather more information, and possibly open the way for a candidate or candidates who would be able to secure a more unanimous vote.’’ Aid.Denault seconded.In answer to Aid.Jenckes, the mayor said the effect of the motion, if passed, would be to set aside that business and proceed with the next.Aid.Denault objected to the motions remaining on the table.It would be better for them to be withdrawn.The mayor replied that he could not ask for the motions to be withdrawn.Aid.Simoneau could not see what would be gained by withdrawing these motions now, that could be done as well next Monday as now.It seemed that neither of the motions would have the unanimous support of the council, so by postponing the matter another week they might arrive at a better solution.After further discussion the motion was carried by 7 to 3.The voting was as follows : For—Thompson, Forest, Denault, Prunier, Simoneau, Brault and Gen-cst.Against—Jenckes, Darche and Ewing.A petition from the Page Printing Co.for a granolithic sidewalk from 1 Wellington street to their factory on Albert street was presented, the company agreeing to pay the proprietors’ share of the cost.Referred to Road Committee and Civic Board.A petition from Mr.Channell, secretary of the Exhibition, was read.This referred to the sewerage work on King street, which it was hoped would be finished so as not to be detrimental to the exhibition.Alderman Thompson stated that it was the intention of the Road Committee to close that work four or five days before the exhibition, and leave the street free for exhibition time and complete the work afterwards.C.P.R.TAXES AND BYE-LAW.Some discussion took place on the refusal of the C.P.R.Co.to pay several thousand of dollars arrears in taxes.The old bye-law had never been submitted to the people and was therefore of no effect.Alderman Thompson gave notice to introduce a new one at the next meeting, and it was understood a conference would be arranged with the company’s officials to endeavor to come to an amicable arrangement.PLAN OF SEWERAGE SYSTEM.A petition from the residents of the Plateau Camirand concerning the sewers gave opportunity for a long debate on the sewerage system, and Alderman Thompson moved : “That the Civic Board and the City Engineer supply the Council with a plan of the whole sewerage system of the city, with sizes of pipes, and they be requested to make any rccommenda-( Continued on page 8' SERIOUS RELAPSE H.R.H.of Connaught Taken III While at Cowes WILL BE CONFINED TO BED FOR SOME DAYS.CONDITION NOW ACCEPTED MODIFIED DEMANDS.Sofia, Aug.7.—(Special)—It is reported that the Turks are starting an aggressive movement against Bulgarian column at Gumardina, about 70 miles southwest of Adrianople.PRELIMINARY PEACE TREATY.Bucharest, August 7.—Peace was concluded last night between the Bal kan states, and the preliminary treaty will be signed to-day by the delegates of Servia, Greece, Montenegro, Roumania and Bulgaria.The agreement was arrived at only after another ^exhibition of the utter helplessness qf Bulgaria to face her ring of enemies.The new frontier as agreed to starts at a point on the old frontier west of the Struma River, follows the watershed to west of the town of Strurnnitza, thence runs almost through the Struma Valley to the Be-lesh Mountains, and thence easterly in almost a straight line to the Lesta River, thus leaving the town of Strurnnitza, the port of Lagos and Kanthi to Bulgaria, and the port of Kavala to Greece.The new frontier is a deep disappointment to the Bulgarians, who still nurse hopes for its eventual revision by the powers.It is believed that an agreement for the demobolization of the various armies will be signed to-day.The news that peace had been arranged caused great rejoicings here.DIVISION OF TERRITORY.London, August 7.—The Times says that Montenegro will receive from Servia an extension of territory east and south corresponding to the aid Montenegro rendered Servia in the war with Bulgaria.It adds that Vodena and Fiorina will be Greek, as also will be the Saloniki Monastir Railway to about 25 kilometresm Railway to within abolit 25 kilometres of its head.The newspaper considers that the treaty of Bucharest will be only a provisional settlement of the difficulties.US PAÏ PfMÏÏJin UÏES bronze.There is a fine panelled ceiling and the capitals on the top of the pillars are finished in gold leaf.The manager, Mr.R.A.E.Aitken, has a very comfortable office, finished in mahogany, while the clerks’ office has every modern convenience and is also finished in mahogany.Accommodation is provided for a staff of twenty—the present number is ten—and it may be mentioned that the Sherbrooke branch opened with only Mr.Aitken, a clerk and a boy.Upstairs a large sitting-room, a kitchen and four bedrooms for a portion of the staff have been nicely finished in birch by the bank.There are two vaults in the building, a hot water furnace and a large stookroom.Hardwood floors are laid throughout the building ; the offices have a reinforced concrete floor and there is a concrete floor in the basement.The indirect lighting system has been installed and the ventilation and sanitary arrangements are perfect.The main vault in the basement, for books-and securities is Sherbrooke yesterday afternoon.About a dozen members of the Sherbrooke Board of Trade placed their cars at the service of the visitors.A run was first made to East Sherbrooke and to the Park, from which an excellent view of the city and St.Francis valley is to toe had.The business and residential sections ' of the west side of the river were then visited and a stop made at the shops of the Ingersoll-Rand Company, which the visitors inspected with interest.The special train left Sherbrooke about 4 o’clock for Toronto, where the congress opens this week.There was only one lady in the party, Mrs.Femor, of India, who, with her husband, is making the Canadian tour.Although clad in a snakeskin coat, she was apparently a very popular member of the party.Mr.(’.Kido, of Japan, was an interesting member.He is associated with the Manchurian Railw’ay, and has been conducting geological research in that country.Germany, Spain, Finland and other foreign countries, as well as Great Britain and the United States, were represented by distinguished professors of colleges and geological scientists of other departments of work.Mr.Dennis, of the Dominion lie partment of Mines, and Mr.J.A.Dresser, who may be regarded as an Eastern Townships man, were leaders of the party and are both, of course, familiar with the geological conditions of this section of country.Several members of the party will continue their trip through Canada after the Toronto meeting, some of them going as far as Klondike.“Our visit to this wonderful country will be all too brief,” remarked one of the European visitors to the Record.“One cannot understand a country till he sees it, and we are enjoying every day of our sojourn in Canada.” RECORD HUMAN CARGO.New York, INTERESTING RACE BETWEEN LAUNCHES.East Bolton, August 7.—(Special) A long standing dispute re the supremacy of two rival tioats, the “Viper anil “Montreal,” was finally settled once and for all on Sunday afternoon.The “Viper” is owned by John Patterson and Son and was launched here two years ago and has never been defeated or approached by any bout of her size and power.Immediately after the “Viper” was launched several endeavored to copy the hull.Messrs.McPherson and Cummings of Magog procured a copy of the design of tins wonderful boat and at once proceeded to build the “Montreal,” and equipped her with a much higher powered engine with a view of defeating the “Viper.” No satisfactory chance for a race was given the “Viper” although several little brushes were had over which there was always some dispute by the supporters of each boat.Last Sunday, the “Viper” which had been undergoing extensive repairs was launched and was just being tried out for about fifteen niin.utes heavily loaded with tools, etc:,' with three men and with several hundred pounds of bilge water which was taken in during repairs, the “Montreal” which happened to be in the vicinity bore down on the “Viper” running free and light with only one person, her builder on board.It looked like quick and easy victory for the expert Cummings and ttie "Montreal” but when it looked like as everything was lost expert Bowker in charge of the “Viper’s” engine was seen to lean forward and instantly a sharp roal came from the “Viper” as the cut out gave free exhaust and the bow of the ’’Viper” gave a graceful rise clear of the water and in a few seconds shot far past the “Montreal” and showed herself the undoubted victor.It was a very interesting race from the viewpoint of the onlookers, as both were well known boats and engines of each were in charge of their installers and experts.The engineer of the “Viper” reports that under fair conditions the “Viper” in full racing trim and with one man aboard, that Mr.Patterson's boat is capable of another two and one half miles per hour which would give it a complote walk over the “Montreal.” COOKSHIRE TAXES REMAIN UNCHANGED.Cookshire, August 7.— and the end of the dav finds him with reserve strength— he suffers less from exhaustion and depletion of powers.“I particularly recommend Grape-Nuts food to those whose occupations involve u great deal of brain work.There could not lie a food better adapted to the strengthening and conservation of the faculties and en-(Tei.s.If supplies n more sustained mental vigor than any other food that I know of.“Grape Nuts food contains all the dements tdint form,the valuable part of natural die I in a condensed, toothsome and easily digestible form.” Name given by Canadian Postum Co., Windsor, Out.PRINTED ON THE ^WHITEST, llG T E.Ball’s home.About two hundred people gathered and listened with rapt attention punctuated with much appiauae to the several items on the programme.Miss Ball gave six readings, humorous and serious.Special mention should be made of her rendition of Oueen Catherine’s Trial in Shakespeare’s Henry VIII.Her personation of the different characters was realistic in the extreme.Miss Jameson of Montreal performed very cleverly upon the violin, while a couple of vocal selections were enjoyed from Mrs.Brown of Newport.After the literary part of the programme had been brought to a close, ice cream was sold and a social hour enjoyed by all present.The treasury of the Ladies’ was enriched to the amount of about $65.over expense, and the fact that seemed to be especially pleasing to them was, that it had been done with practically no effort on their part.-»-—- WEST BROME.Arrivals : Mr.A.J.Darrah, Sutton, at Mr.D.G,.Derby’s ;
