Hated persons after they have been placed in positions, co-operate with agents in the Old Country and in New England, and maintain a publicity bureau relative, to the Eastern Townships.2 Another edition of the Eastern Towmships booklet, with more attractive cover, otherwise as published by your government last year, which we are pleaeed to say is the most attractive and comprehensive booklet yet issued on behalf of the Eastern Townships.3 The immediate appointment of an agent lecturer under the direction of your government, with instructions to co-operate with our immigration and repatriation society branch, and engaged by ihe year.We believe that agent should spent five months (.November to April)) in the Old Country, and the following three months should be employed in receiving on this side the people he has secured, and the balance of the year in travelling through the Townships, interviewing farmers and immigrants who have been placed, collecting data, samples and information for use the following year.i An agent lecturer assigned to the .New England States, engaged by and Vyrgrking under instructions of your /government, with instructions to cooperate with the Society, in an effort to interest former Canadians to return to their native province.5 The appropriation by your Government of $5,000, which wc consider a moderate amount, for the purpose of assisted fares, in the case only of desirable farm laborers, said advances to Vie protected and repayable in manner established by the Ontario authorities as described in papers herewith attached.The colonization office at Sherbrooke would undertake the collection of the refunds, and would, also, if you desired, undertake the administration of the fu dortake the administration of the fund itself, if it did not seem advis-nble to burden your London office with this work or to handle it direct through cme of your Governmental Departments.In Ontario, $25,-000 was advanced in assisted fares this year, and the refunds showed a loss of only 5 p.c.Your petitioners, after a careful study of local requirements and conditions and of experiences here and elsewhere in connection with immigration cfTorts, are convinced that Some such plan as outlined above is essential if results are to be obtained.We attach herewith for your information (a! Look young! Either prepare the tonic at home or get from any drug store a 50-cent bottle of “Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur Hair Remedy.” Thousands of folks recommend this ready-to-use preparation, because it darkens the hair beautifully and removes dandruff, stops scalp itching and falling hair; besides, no one can possibly tell, as it darkens so naturally and evenly.You moisten a sponge or soft brush with it, drawing this through the hair, taking one small strand at a time.By morning the gray hair disappears; after another application or two, its natural color is restored and it becomes thick, glossy and lustrous, and you appear years younger.ihanksgiving Day Oct.20tti.Faro and Omvthird for round trip.Going October .17th, 18th.I‘Jtli« 20th.lie turn limit October 22nd, 1913, Single Fare tfoinpr October 20th.Return limit October 20th, 1913.Homeseekers’ Excursions Round Trip Tickets on sale to Winni-pop, Edmonton and intermediate stations every Tuesday until October 28th.Return limit two mont lus.City Ticket Office.0 Strathcona Sq.Bell Tel.3 30.or C.P.R.Btn.Tel.207.GENERAL STEAMSHIP AGENCY.From Glasgow.From Montreal.WHAT DYSPEPTICS ] Oct. 4 ATHENIA Oct. 18 Oct. I L SATURNIA Oct. 25 Oct. 18 CASSANDRA Nov. 1st Passage Rates : Cabin (11.) $47.50 ; presidents have found it good for qui?t and pleasure; young men at the college not far a-way have resorted to it for the dinner in honor of their friends ; and Paradise comes down to its diversion to private ownership with continuing chapters of interest.None of the latter ones have done better than make it an exception in its ancient class, most of which have fallen away or remain in rather shabby old age.Its golden period was when the stage rolled up with its passengers on outside and in, its proud driver with long whip and a firm hold in the leather ribbons guiding wheelhorses! and leaders with equalizing skill,! and the loafers and half-employed 1 better sort of the village gathered ' about the door to study its human freightage and possibly gain some knowledge of the world with which the lumbering vehicle furnished the liveliest, if not the sole communication.Where is Paradise tavern ?Does it matter ?It is only eoncessino to the curiosity of modern type that brooks no omission from the story of the news to say that it is in Stamford, Vt., in the milder green hills, where they moderate their height towards the Massachusetts boundary, nearer to North Adams than any other town grown large enough to have a ! mayor, and not so remote from Williams College.No guide is needed to it for the people of the corners of the two states who have had their taste of its hospitality and whose fathers and grandfathers knew it when it was not a singular exception of roadside resorts of quality and trade.New acquaintance with the old inns such of them as remain, is being afforded by the swift cars that are running over the old stage routes.Some of them are finding a new possibility of business in harboring the tourists that race where their predecessors of a few generations ago crawled over country roads.Others are being transformed, like Paradise tavern, into private country places.They are standing in for the rediscovery of the remote but beautiful places that the new means of travel is making possible.And while there is a glow of romance over the stage travel, there is no possibility that the swift modern tourist would endure the old means of travel.Have they heard it.described by some passenger who was compelled to use it ?Then, they know that it was not without its deprivations.The horses that moved grandly into the village under the crack of the whip and stirred by the blast of the horn that told them as well as the passengers, of approach to a resting place, were! slow movers out on the long stretch-j es.The old pictures, either of print; or story, never show the lagging and; plodding horses of the distances be-; , tween the towns.Let the romance of the old days be | unmarred.The forgetfulness of their.deprivations need not be disturbed.I Nevertheless the Paradise inns are undeniably more agreeably reached , by 40-horsepower propulsion than 4-j horse pulling it.It is fine to sum- ' are plain; and play is as wicked a woman as ever lived, but in the hands of Nazimova, interpreted by her methods the actress has added fame to herself in this her latest role.In her love scenes Nazimova goes to the limit of realism, it is said, but always there is that artistry which stamps her as the foremost sensational actress of the times.Mr.Fagan has condensed the Hichens novel into a four-act play, but he is said to have followed the author’s plot with much more fidelity than is usually found in stage adaptations of books.The result is said to be a powerful and very in tercsting story, The scenic pictures are reported to fully carry out the ! effect of reality and the little details of the performance are said to help materially in making it thoroughly fascinating throughout.Supported by her original company, Charles Froh-man presents Nazimova at His Majesty’s, Tuesday evening, Oct.21st.GOVERNMENT THAT WOULD BRING IT INTO FORCE WOULD NOT LIVE LONG.Montreal, Oct.16.—Col F.Wat-ney, who commands a territorial regiment in Surrey, England, and who is at the Windsor cn route for the Coast, having landed interests in the West, stated th it m spite of all that is said and done, conscription makes very little headway in the United Kingdom.Public opinion is against it, he says, in Great Britain, and a government which would bring con script!on into force would not live very long once the people got an opportunity to pronounce upon the measure.•‘Since the days of Pitt no one in authority in England has ever advocated conscription, and although 1 am a Conservative and some Unionists when in opposition have advocated such a measure, ) have no idea in the world that if the party were to come into power to-morrow they would introduce conscription in the army of the British Empire.” “What about Lord Roberts?” “He never advocated the measure when in authority, and it was only after he had ceased being command or in-chief that he began to talk con scription in the army.As a matter of fact, when he held supreme command of the Brit-.h army, Lord Roberts seemed to thin';
