SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF EXTRA REVENUE FOR ROAD.Boston, Nov.29.—Some things are made obvious by the conferences over Boston & Maine freight rates.The j railroad has made out a case before the tribunal by which its rates are controlled.It will be permitted to increase its charges on certain class- ! es of freight.A basis for this in- i ctease is agreed upon, calculated to I yield a substantial amount of extra revenue to the Boston & Maine Rail-read without disturbing industrial interests.That will he the immediate result of the conferences which Interstate Commerce Commissioner Prouty has had in Boston for several weeks with the Public Service Commissions and Railroad Commissions of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermoot.In their deliberation the commissioners arrived by degrees at the conclusion that the Boston & Mnine Railroad needs more revenue.How much more it needs to improve its serpice and meet its charges was a mathematical problem easily determined, but how much extra it should be allowed to charge the shippers at this time needed most careful thought.PARCELS P0SÏ Postmaster General and Railways Again Discuss Matter SUFFRAGETTES INTERRUPT THE UNIONIST LEADER.BOMBARD HIM WITH PAMPHLETS.Dublin, Nov.29.—The Unionists party yesterday carried the war into the enemy’s territory when Andrew Bonar Law leader of the opposition in the House of Commons, Sir Edward Carson, leader of the Irish Unionists, and other prominent men irrived to deliver in the Irish capital a series of speeches on Home Rule.In reply to the deputation which welcomed him, Bonar Law reiterated that the Unionists had opposed consistently and completely the whole idea of the separation of the United Kingdom and insisted that the Government must seek sanction of the people before attempting to make the change.During a speech in the afterncoh before the Unionist Association, Bonar Law said Premier Asquith's speech of the preceding day seemed to him a complete acceptance of the orders of John Redmond, leader of the Irish Nationalists, for “full steam ahead,’’ and if that were so the difficulties of the Unionist party were gone.Suffragettes attempted to reach Donar Law as he was driving afterwards to the residence of Lord Iveagh.They bombarded him with pamphlets.Mrs.Sheepy Skcfflngton and Mrs.Connery, the leaders of the suffragettes of Dublin, were arrested and charged with obstructing the police.The suffragettes wanted to- protest against the exclusion of women from Mr.Bonar Law’s meetings in Dublin and his refusal to receive a deputation of the women.They also intended to ask him to state whether the Unionist party was for or against giving women the vote.STUDENTS RIOT.The streets last night -were yesterday what assistance his Government is prepared to give in the matter of furthering the consolidation of rural schools providing educational relief for Canadian Labrador and promoting education generally.He announced that a special grant of $6,000 would be made towards consolidation, but did not specify the extent of the sum that would be forthcoming for Labrador.It was also brought out at the sitting that the sum available under the terms of the Burrill act for classes of instruction in agriculture in the rural schools would be only $3,000.This, by the way, is the same grant that is made for tobacco agriculture alone.While these sums are small, it is considered that they will he increased later.A sub-committee was appointed today to take up the question of consolidation at once and to give practical effect tc the wishes of the committee as a whole.The members are Hon.Sydney Fisher, Dr.Rexford and Dr.Rowat, and they will work in conjuncticn wiih Dr.Parmelee, the secretary of the Department of Education.They already have a list of places where consolidation is considered desirable and where it would be advisable to make a start and it is understood that their guiding principle will he to make a beginning with those municipalities which are ready to bear some of the initial cost of consolidation themselves and where there is most enthusiasm for this relorm.Hitherto there was no idea what the initial cost would be, especially as regards the question for conveyance of pupils, not was it known definitely what amount of aid would he advanced for the first year or so.Efforts at consolidation will be rather of an experimental nature, but it is anticipated that most of the rural municipalities will fall in with the scheme when they have an example to follow and^realize its benefits.Another commivt.ee was named to report as to whet means must be taken to promote the effective instruction of agriculture in the rural schools, but it is not expected that anything practical can be done in this regard before February.'-4- REBELS SEE MAZATLAN Is Most Inportant Port on West Coast of Mexico BELIEVED THAT NONE OF FOREIGNERS WERE INJURED DURING ATTACK.Mexico Tamaulipas, killed himself after losing Victoria, the capital.The suicide of General Rabago is not admitted by the Government, but the news is contained in a private telegram to his relatives here, who do not question its authenticity.General Rabago, as military governor, was responsible for the garrison when Victoria was attacked by the rebels on November 17.WILL BOYCOn Many Stall Holders Ob* result, however, and a furth-i er gathering will in all probability ] have to be held.The railways are asking for an increase in the compensation they receive for carrying the mails, from two millions to about $6,000,000.Their i stand is practically that since the express companies with which they; arc connected will suffer a serious loss of business as a result of the inauguration of the parcels post, It is! only fair that they should receive an increased compensation for the mail carriage generally.The meeting yesterday was a brief one, the Postmaster-General leaving for Quebec in’the among the stall holders on tb" market against the levying of increased tolls for those dealers who sell goods other than their own growth or produce.It appears that alternate tariffs have been in existence for seme time hut the enforcement of the higher scale has only just been commenced.Several of the dealers declare they will leave the market in consequence and they point cut that as two-thirds of them are subject to the higher rate, Sherbrooke people will suffer a great loss in consequence.Aid.Denault, Chairman of the Market commietce, when interviewed on the matter this morning confirmed the report that those dealers who sold the produce of others were liable to heavier tolls than those who confined eheir sales to their own products.MARKET RATES.Under the markey by-law the end during the past summer an auto-stage service to Weaverville, a distance of 26 miles.The mine owners contemplate the improvement of the road to Junction City.“During the period oi construction of surface equipment the mine has been under systematic development.No.6 tunnel in the Bailey ground adjoining has been advanced and a raise will be driven to connect with the Globe working situated at greater elevation.A temporary two bucket tram is employed to carry the ore , from the Globe through the Bailey i crosscut for delivery to the mill.A large tonnage of ore Is blocked out and ready for extraction and direct delivery to the mill.” INTERNATIONAL LIVE STOCK SHOW OPENED AT CHICAGO TODAY AND WILL CONTINUE FOR WEEK.ONE Chicago, 111., Nov.29.—(Special)— With exhibits valued at millions of dollars, Chicago’s annual international live stock exposition was opened at the stockyards today and will he continued through the coming week.In the number, variety and high class of the exhibits the show this year never has been equalled.The display includes pure-bred cattle rrom Europe and Canada as well as from many sections of the United States.Carload lots from Texas and the West are included in the display.The educational features of the exhibition are to he given more emphasis this year than heretofore.One rundred thousand progressive farmers and breeders are expected here from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kamsas, Illinois, Indiana and other States, to witness the cattle judging contests and to listen to addresses from experts representing the United States Department of Agriculture and numerous State agricultural colleges.A score of governors have signified their intention to visit the exhibition.G(hers in attendance will include the agricultural commissioners of practically all of the Southern States.MAPLESUGAR ADULTERATION (Continued from page seven.! sues or quibbling.Would the Chief .Chemist explain where the hardship to the consumers comes in ?What class of consumers ?If a poor person to-day wants maple syrup he has ; got to pay through the nose for the adulterated article just as much as for the pure in lots of cases, (see ! your bulletin) and the adulterator waxes fat off the profits of palming j off commercial glucose or mucilage ! for the pure sap of the maple tree.I challenge right away the statement that the maple consumer wants a compound, even at a cheaper price.Maple products are luxuries, and even a poor person when indulging in a luxury wants it pure.If he wants a compound he will ask for it and never fear there will be plenty of makers on hand to hand it to bim, even as a compound, and make a good profit of it, too.I question if one person out of a thousand asks across a counter for Maple Compound.It is peculiar, it is irritating, it is even pathetic to watch the supine, shiftless, do-nothing attitude of public officials over questions of this sort, until an aggravated public spirit kicks them into inaction or out of their jobs.Here is a headline from one of our city dailies : “Trade Declining in Maple Sugar — Year’s Production Shows Loss of One Million Dollars’ Value.” The article is dated Ottawa, Nov.12th, 1913, and is taken fr.orn a Department of Agriculture Bulletin ; the present agitation is evidently doing that much good.But if that is all the protection the syrup industry is going to get, it is farewell to the maple groves of Canada.There is a lot of talk of forest conservation, conservation of natural resources ; why here is where the government can conserve groves and Industry at the one time.Their efforts so far have been particularly effective to judge by the above figures.You, Mr.McGill, want us to be patient-patience is a virtue ; but you can’t preach patience to a goose that is being plucked, the goose is apt to view the plucking process from a different angle.In short, there is no way out of the mess, that incompetent bungling of this big issue (a very big one to the farmers of Eastern Canada), has brought about, but hard and fast legislation, actively applied, that will put the adulterator out of the adulterating business.Let him sell goods under a genuine label or sell adulterated goods under another name than maple.The matter has been juggled to and fro long enough between the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Inland Revenue with you as Chief Chemist, acting as consulting expert.If manufacturing interests can hire expert chemists to outwit your staff and mislead the public while ruining a magnificent farming industry, and you and your analysts stand by helpless, what are we to think ?But perish the thought.It only wants the necessary incentive ;
