reopen again for the winter session on Monday, January 10th.The Sunday schools representing the St.Luke’s, Adventist and Methodist churches will hold their Christinas festivities on Christmas Eve.One of the welcome news items cf the week was the cancelling of the luxury tax by the federal authori-tfes.This tax was not exceptionally severe, but was a decided nuisance ever since its attempted enforcement. The law was continually being changed, making its application very difficult. In addition, it afforded opportunity for shady work on the part of those who wished to do so, thus placing a handicap on honesty.Coming'' also as it did just at the commencement of the Christmas rush, it will probably help in no small degree to break the buying strike which the Canadian public generally seems to have been indulging in during the past two or three weeks. There is apparently, judging from humors, a movement on foot to endeavor to have the county of Stan-stead put in the wet column once again. In the year 1914 a vote was held in this county with the result that the county went dry by a majority of approximately four hundred majority. The enforcement of this was delayed to some extent by its legality having been the cause of fk law case. The prohibition forces finally won out, and as a result Stanstead county has since that time been dry.Now it appears that an effortwill be made to have the county return to Its former state.Mr.E.Auger, of Montreal, is spending a few days with his parents, Mayor and Mrs.A.A.A"" The members of Lake Magog Lodge, A.F.& A.M., will hold to proceed overseas to maintain the high meals to which Canada had pledged herself, we gave cur solemn promise to look after their family interests while they were away.TVe succeeded to a certain extent, but our assistance represents an infinitesimal proportion of our contracted debt and it is extremely appropriate that, in the midst of our holiday greetings, we should give a thought to the father-fess children of those Urave soldiers ¦who lie buried in the fields of Flanders and other scenes of desperate struggles. » .Sherbrooke can rre:; bxiotq to t>e proud of the record of her own boys, hut gratitude expressed in a material way is the best form of proving her sincerity. From time to time the noble self-sacrifice of our soldiers is eloquently brought to the attention of the public, but can_we realize the pangs of emotion to which the widow is constantly subjected, when together with her children, seated at the dinner table, she is for ever painfully aware of the 'Vacant ehair.’’ Within the course of the next few days we will be exchanging greet-tngs with many dear friends, we wi.i no doubt be giving and receiving numerous Christmas presents, but what about the children of those who gave us the biggest present of all?Though we can never expect to reciprocate on the same sacred basis, we should and we must, graciously •nd generously give our full moral Bnd financial support for the protection and honorable upkeep of the wtdows and children of the bravest of the brave. The response to the local appeal for funds to provide a real Christmas treat for the children of soldiers is very encouraging, but in measuring out the extent of our do-jranon let us bear in mind that the fathers of these children, in many cases, paid the supreme penalty. This was the amount of their sacrifice for us, surely there can be no limit to the slight financial inconvenience it might cause us.Let us give freely, confronted with the knowledge that we are attempting to liquidate a perpetual debt.LLOYD GEORGE’S EMIGRATION SCHEME.The proposal for the relief of unemployment out-ined by Premier Lloyd George, in the House of Commons, is one of extreme magnitude, and one likely to be subject to intricacies of a very delicate nature. In resorting to emigration within the Empire, serious consideration will have to be given to the industrial conditions prevailing in the districts towards which it is intended to direct the people who are to be bene-fitted under this scheme. Here in Canada unemployment has increased steadily within the past few months and it appears to be a most inopportune moment to consider providing work for thousands of emi-j grants when we have our own un-1 employment question continually inj discussion before the Federal and j Provincial Governments.Charity be- j gins at home and our first respon-1 eibility lies in relieving the condi- i Mans of our present unemployed. It is interesting in this connection, to note that the United States are adopting stringent measures for minimizing, if not totally abolishing, the influx cf emigrants.Conditions in the spring may warrant an attempt being made along the Unes proposed by the Premior, but the Immediate necessity of providing Work for the unemployed, during the •sinter, etHl remains very acute and other measures will have to be ««krpted, .- ¦ ?¦¦ * d* *> *
