but if the decision is that a dissolution will not affect the operation of the Parliament Act, the Government will go to the country with the cry of “The Army against the People,” whilst the counter cry of the Unionists would be, "If you want civil war and bloodshed in Ulster, vote Radical.” Much interest is being shown in the almost daily conferences between Mr.Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and James Eamsay McDonald, the independent Labor member, which is interpreted in some quarters as meaning a now coalition with Labor, which would place the land question and social reform to the forefront.SHALL THE ARMY RULE?London, March 27—Field Marshall Sir John French, chief of the general Stair of the British Army, has thrown tip his commission as ¦ result of the repudiation by the Government oT the Gough guarantee, which made it a matter of individual choice whether an ofhcdr would obey the order of a superior, and which he and Lieutenant General Ewart signed, together with Colonel Seely, believing it to In- the policy pi the Cabinet.II may lie that 'this resignation and that of General Ewart, adjutant general of the army, and certain other high J fleers, which are expected, marks the | beginning of the reorganization of the British military estaSlishment, which the recent incident has greatly discredited.Shall the army rule the Empire is still the issue before the people of Great Britain ?It remains to be seen whether the officers in Ulster will continue defiant in view of Asquith’s withdrawal of the guarantee given by Colonel Seely and the Army Council.Asquith says the army must obey orders in Ireland as elsewhere. It is not impossible that this Ulster incident eventually will redound to the political benefit of the Liberals.:The proven facts that the mutiny of the army officers in Ulster, who are mostly Protestants and Unionists, was advised bv leading Unionist leaders and that condonation of the offence was urged by the king will be • strong issues with which to go before the people. If the Liberals should spring a general election at this1 time it is quite probable that it would fare better than it would have at an earlier period.ATTEMPT TO PROVOKE BLOODSHED Andrew Bonar Law, leader of the I Opposition, denounced the Government’s measures as a wicked attempt ito provoke bloodshed in Ulster. The I Government had not believed it possible that the army had such strong convictions as had been shown. The i army considered that in the matter 'of Home Rule the Government was as ; much a revolutionary committee as Huerta’s Government in Mexico.Colonel Seely, he remarked, had been thrown to the wolves, but there had been a bargain that the wolves would not cat him.ASQUITH SCORES OFFICERS London, March 27—“I am strongly of the opinion” said Premier Asquith in addressing the House of Commons, “that the Government has not the right to ask in advance what an officer might or might not do in a contingency that has not arisen; and still less was it right for an officer to ask assurances of the Government to give such a thing. So long as we are the responsible government of this country, whatever the consequences may be, we shall not assent to the claim of any body of men in the service of ths Crown, officers or men, to demand from the Government in advance assurances as to what they will or will not be required to do in circumstances which have not arisen. That was a new claim, and if we were to assent to it would put the Government at the mercy of the military.” Loud and prolonged cheers and enthusiastic shouts of approval greeted | this pronouncement.UNSAVORY JOING IN THE POLITICAL POT.London, March 27.—A correspondent of the Financial News states that city circles, which are usually well informed believe that Premier Asquith’s stern reproduction of republican manifestations in the House of Commons is not merely the offi-; rial utterances of the Premier, but i are profoundly and personally inspired. It is beginning to be surprised that there is on foot an effort to secure a recrudescence of the republicanism rife forty years ago.The idea is that King George has not acquired his grandmotherjs supreme personal dominance nor his father’s unbounded personal power. It is conjectured that while King George is comparatively young on the.throne | there is a chance to effect a coup ; d’etat, placing at the head of affairs | a.president whose identity well in-I formed persons can guess. He would I be assisted by a vice-president, whose essential qualifications would be coarse language and coarser actions. The writer admits that these conjectures need not cause anxiety, tnough ho thinks it is worth while to know the kind of joints that are cooking in the political pots.BOARD OF TRADE ADOPTS RESOLUTION SUPPORTING PROGRAMME — LARGELY ATTENDED GENERAL MEETING OF BOARD ALDERMEN MENTIONED IN RE- WAS AFRAID THAT AFFAIRS OF PORT WILL BE DEALT WITH HER PRIVATE LIFE WOULD BY THE INCOMING BE REVEALED IN FIGARO COUNCIL. Paris, March 27—With a cry of in- Montreal, March 27.-Two city ' dignation during her crose-examina- HAS TO RELY ON PEOPLE THAT ARE NOT PERMITTED TO LAND ON AUSTRALIAN SHORES.London, March 27.—Premier Cook, assessors and a city engineer were tion by Magistrate Boucard yester- 10f Australia, delivered an important dismissed yesterday by the Board of day at the preliminary enquiry into speech yesterday in which he dis- Control as a sequel to the report of the killing of .M.Calmette, Mme. i cussed Winston Churchill’s recent Judge Fortin, who presided at the : Caillaux reminded the magistrate ; to kill their pork when it was at its more profitable age, and not have to feed it at a loss while waiting for the market to get right.Mr.Watson's proposal was that butter, eggs and other produce which was too plentiful in the summer could thus be hold over at a nominal cost, as this cold storage plant would not bo a dividend paying project.A few of the councillors did not think the project feasible, but a majority of them voted to have the idea investigated by the secretary, A petition was presented by Mr, O'Uroady, advocate, of Sherbrooke, signed by Domina 8t, Onge and fifteen or twenty other ratepayers of the Township of Windsor, asking in appeal from a decision of the Council of the Township of Windsor, for the opening of a road from the 10th to thn 14th ranges, lots 21 and farmers do when the pulpwood is gone ?and for a time the answers suggested disaster.Opinions have changed of late, and now farmers are answering that they will attend to their farming when the pulpwood has disappeared, and some have concluded that they would have done better if they had allowed their pulp-wood to grow, and had confined their attention to their farming years ago.In some cases growing timber has been cut and peeled in a busy season of the year when the farm work was neglected in consequence, cut up and piled a little later and then hauled eight or ten miles to the station for a price that only paid for the cost of handling without allowing anything for the lumber. The time spent handling $100 worth of pulpwood, when it has to be hauled as far as a great deal of it is being hauled to the station this year would if expended on a potato crop produce more than $100 worth of potatoes in addition to providing the necessary commercial fertilizers, to Say nothing of leaving the soil in better condition for succeeding crops, and horse-energy saved. The trees left standing will increase in value, and the farmer’s time will be worth mon- BETTBR- SEED.It is now
