celebration of the Glorious Fourth began to arrive in despatches received early today, and indications this morning were that the efforts to make the United States national holiday \u201csafe and sane\u201d were not likely to meet with any greater degree of success than in previous years.At San Jose, Cal., Gladys Flat-ham, a youthful celebrant, is dead and her playmate, Joyce McLaughlin, is not expected to live.Their dresses caught fire while they were playing with fireworks, and they suffered severe burns despite the efforts of neighbors to save them.Damage ,to property estimated at half a million dollars was reported last night from Marysville, Cal.Small boys setting off firecrackers started a fire which destroyed twelve city blocks and burned four spans of the Southern Pacific trestle, blocking railway traffic on the east side of the Sacramento Valley.During celebrations today at Springfield, Mass., a young girl was assaulted and badly beaten; Joseph Starlay, also of Springfield, is in Mercy Hospital, suffering from knife wounds received in a fight in East Long Meadow.Two Italians in the same city engaged in a revolver duel said to have resulted from a family feud.Neither was injured.Lockjaw, resulting from the explosion of blank cartridges being used to celebrate the Fourth, caused the death of Wm.Drumm, 15, and Michael Santello, 14, at Norwalk, Conn.The Philip Tremblay Jumped into the Water with Clothes on and Was Seized with Cramps.(Associated Press Despatch) OTTAWA, ONT., July 4.\u2014In an effort to save Miss Jane Shaw, of Ottawa, who had gone beyond her depth in theh lake at Ironside, Que., yesterday, Philip Trembley, twenty-five years old, of Woodroffe, lost his life.He jumped into the water with his clothes on, was seized with cramps, and sank before help could reach him.Henry Paquet, a companion and a strong swimmer, reached Miss Shaw in time to rescue her.Trembley\u2019s body was recovered.GREAT DAMAGE WAS CAUSED BYTORNADO One Man Was Killed and $300,-000 Damage Done by Tornado at Frederick, S.D.(Associated Press Despatch) ABERDEEN, S.D., July 4.-A tornado struck Frederick, S.D., on Saturday killing one man and causing over three hundred thousand dollars damage.Practically every building in the town was demolished.Arne Anderson, who was assisting his family to the basement of their home, was killed-, in his efforts to escape when the house was tom from its foundation.The storm came as a climax to ten days of severe heat, and although it caused great property damage, agricultural authorities believed crops would be
