that General Pau, the distinguished French (commander, who has been making a triumphant tour in Russia and the (Balkan countries, arrived here April 8, to attend the meeting on behalf iof France, and that -while here these two representatives of the Allies met (three prominent Austro-Hungarian statesmen and an important delegation [from Russia.TURKEY REPRESENTED.It is public knowledge that at this time -two very prominent Turks, Klarasso Effendi and Midhat Ohucry Bey, made it convenient to be here.These Turkish leaders took a prominent part in the preliminary negotia-itions for peace in the Turco-Italian war, and although they deny publicly that they are now here on such business, the impression is strong that (the sudden gathering of world-famous diplomats cannot be explained in any other way than as a preliminary discussion looking to a separate (peace for Austria. i , : i I : , CARPATHIAN OPERATIONS HAMPERED BY BAD WEATHER.Toronto, April 19.— (Special)—A cable to the Toronto Globe says:: "A Copenhagen despatch says it is reported that a sudden Russian storming attack has jnst been delivered between the Pruth and the Dneistsr.Reports from the eastern theatre imply that operations in the Carpathians are hampered by the bad conhition of the roads.This obstacle in the way of the Russian advance has given the enemy time to reinforce.Ger-pian reinforcements hurried to the defence of Hungary were intercepted by a stronger Russian force on the hanks of the Dunjec and forced to accept battle wMïe endeavoring to join the Austro-Hungarian army on the -slopes of the Carpathians.” TURK TORPEDO BV BRITISU SHIPS Made an Attack on Transport Carrying British Troops in Aegean Sea BRITISH SUBMARINE E-15 WRECKED IN DARDANELLES AND 24 CREW HELD AS PRISONERS.London, April 19.—The British Admiralty, in a statement issued Saturday night, announced that a Turkish torpedo boat had beer, sunk in the Aegean Sea.The text of the Admiralty’s statement follows : ‘‘The transport Manitou, carrying British troops, was attacked by a Turkish torpedo boat in the Aegean Sea this morning.The Turkish boat fired three torpedoes at the transport, all of which missed th§ mark.The torpedo boat then made off, but was chased by the British cruiser Minerva and British torpedo boat destroyers and was finally run ashore and destroyed on the coast of Chios, in Kalammuti Bay.The members of the crew of the Turkish warship were made prisoners.“It is reported that about one hundred men on board the transport lost their lives through drowning, but full particulars have not yet been received.” FIVE GERMANS ARE AMONG THE : PRISONERS.London, April 19.— A Chios despatch says there were five Germans, -including the captain, among the crew of thirty on the Turkish .tor-1 pedo boat which ran ashore after be-;
