[" I JT Sherbrooke Daily Record Established 1897 SHERBROOKE, QUE., TUESDAY JUNE 29, 1915 ONE CENT RUSSIAN ARMIES RAVE BEEN LINKED UP AGAIN Now in Solid Front From the San to Bukowina.Highest Military Authorities Describe the Russian Position Facing the Germans as Highly Satisfactory.Italians in Austrian Territory of Riva.French Make Progress Along Road Between Angres and Abiain.BUSINESS AT IN ARRESTS MADE CITYJjOUNCIL Salary Tax PetitioD From Ratepayers Turned Down By Aldermen the Russian position The highest authority in Petrograd describes kclng the Germans as highly satisfactory.'\u2019 Russian armies linked up again.New York, June 29.\u2014(Special) \u2014A cable to the Herald from London says: Grand Duke Nicholas has accomplished what not one London military observer in ten thought possible of accomplishment.He has effected a retirement from the Dniester and linked up his armies from the San to Bukowina in a solid front, without the loss of a man from the troop disorders that are regarded as inevitable in any great retreat.From the despatches sent out of Galicia, it seems certain the last three days of the Dniester battle was an engagement organized to cover the retirement of the army that had defended Lemberg to its positions behind the Bug and Zlota Lipa Rivers.The evacuation of the whole Dniester line was hastened, however, by the Austro-Germans who crossed the stream north oi Zurawno.The necessity for falling back at that point placed Halicz in a position where it could be attacked from three sides, and as a consequence that town was abandoned by the Russians yesterday, and according to Berlin was occupied by the Germanic allies.For more than three weeks Halicz bad resembled the fulcrum of a scales, with great armies swaying on *ach side, but the town itself was maintained solidly by the Russians.The retreat from the Dniester has ended temporarily at least on the Gnila Lipa River, which flows northand south before Rohatyn, and which offers an exceptionally strong first defence.But military authorities do not expect heavy fighting along that river.They expressed the opinion, the next serious battle probably willoccur along the Zlota Lipa, which runs parallel to the Gnila Lipa, fifteen miles further to the eastward, where the Russians would benefit by the railroad with which the Tarno-pol line connects.RUSSIAN SITUATION SATISFACTORY.London, June 29.\u2014 especial) \u2014The correspondent of the Daily News at Petrograd telegraphs : \u201cThree German armies have been detached to settle the.troublesome Russians along the Dniester.The Russians have separated and rejoined along the River Gnila Lipa, holding Halicz and the southern limits of the Dniester.Since his failure to cover his rear, Field-Marshal von Macken-sen began a tentative movement northward, but the Russians here are preparing for him.RUSSIAN CENTRE REFORMING.London, June 29.\u2014(Special)\u2014The Russian centre in Galicia is rapidly reforming behind the River Gnila Lipa, before General von Linsiagen\u2019s drive across the Dniester, but this retreat, in the opinion of London military critics, is almost entirely due to the battle in the Lemberg region, where the positions of the Russians made retirement inevitable.These movements have strengthened the Austro-German line and have consolidated the halt! of the Teutons on the regained Galician capital.FRENCH MAKE PROGRESS AT ABLAIN.Paris, June 29.\u2014(Special)\u2014The French War Office this afternoon gave 1 which was held in the Foresters'\u2022Hall and relatives who were present from' was well attended and proved to be a ;
