EAST BROUGHTON, Que., Dec.' 11.—Damage estimated at between $150,000 and $200,00 was caused by a fire which late yesterday afternoon totally destroyed the large .mill and store of the Asbestos Mines j Limited. The flames, v.hmh were ! first noticed shortly after three | j o’clock in the afternoon, spread very ' rapidly, and completed their work of | destruction notwithstanding the ef- j forts of the workmen to stay their ! progress. In addition to the two large buildings, which will take some time to replace, it is stated that about one thousand tons of asbestos fibre stor-jed in the shed was partly damaged.; j The amount that the mill and store | j shed are covered by insurance could j i not be ascertained this morning.I It is the general opinion of the of-jficials that a defective electric wire ! l was the cause of ^the conflagration, j : It appears that the previous day the ; main power switch at the switch station “blew cut” two or three times and later the power was shut off and an investigation carried out.The electric wire lines were patrolled to ascertain the trouble, but the linemen found everything apparently in condition.Consequently the power was turned on again about three o’clock yesterday afternoon and it was about fifteen minutes later that the flames were seen shooting from the mill., Efforts were made to check the pro- j gress of the flames, but the district j has no regular fire fighting appar- | atus and the blaze spread rapidly, j until the whole building was a mass _ of flames. It >s reported that 200,000 of The mill was built around the year these Jackie Coogan statuettes have i 1908 and in 1920 by Mr.J.A.Jacobs, been sold in Paris this year i who shortly afterwards formed the - -— Asbestos Mines Limited. The mill !
