the Danes require Schleswig to rem dn unit -d with D nmark, as b has been for some hundred years; but these conflicting claims of the p 'Ople and heir sovereign might sureiy have been settled without app‘aliog to the sword. All die powers of Europe have, in fa.f, inteifered to settle he dispu’e, and, much to the di'grace of diplom icy, have rath r exasperated thin reconciled the paries. In particular some potentates ol Germany— especial y the King of Prussia—have blown up the fiime. The result is a bloody battle, in which it is said not less than ten thousand human beings have been killed or wounded, and Schleswig seems likely to remain in connection with Benin »rk, as it was before the two years’ dispute had begun ana the battle had been fought. For some time the Danes had been collect-inp- their forces and lor some time the Holstein-Schleswiggers, under the command of General Willisen.a Prussian officer, had been preparing to resist the Danes. The latter were reinforced—not to say urged—by volunteers from various parts of Germany, the fighting spirit being yet strong in many of the Germans. The Commaiider-in-Chief is a Prussian.General Van der Hoost is a Prussian. The Commander of the aniliery is a Hanoverian. And the great hero of the army is Colonel Von derTann, is a Bavarian.Pretty strong proofs that the Schleswig-hlol-steiners are made the victims of the foolish and vain ambition of theoretical professors and of aspiring soldiers. On the 25th the battle was fought at Idstedt, about six miles from the town of Schleswig. It was begun by the Danes the other party having made fïo agressive movement. After a fight which lasted from half-past two o’clock in the morning, in the midst of rain, till half past one, the Schleswigers were defeated and obliged to retreat, which they did however in good order. They abandoned the town of Schleswig, ¦which was occupied by the Danes. Many of the inhabitants, being hostile to the victors, fied from the town, leaving their homes and their property at the mercy of the soldiery. That the fair face of this cultivated country should be devastated, and the people driven from their homes and be pillaged and slaughtered greatly to the disturbance and injury of all the surrounding neighbourhood, for some undefined or trifling matter, is truly deplorable ; and the theorists who have fostered the quarrel, the ambitious soldiers who have hired out their swords to carry it on, the politicians and diplomatists who have not prevented it coming to this pass, and especially those who, by their intriguns, have encouraged it, all deserve and will in the end receive, the condemnation, if not the execration, of civilized Europe. In the midst of these deplorable scenes some traits of humanity are recorded which redeem our common nature from the reproach it might deserve were it to be only resolute in working out political mischief and shedding blood.*c The female population of Schleswig (says the correspondent of the Daily News) had made great preparations for the refreshments of the troops on the day of battle, and the refreshments collected were given equally to the Schleswig Holsteiners and Danes.” So hospitals have been esta-biished at Altona and other places, and relief sent from Hamburg, and much has been done by the peaceful people to mitigate the horrors that the politicians and the warriors aie inflicting on themselves and others. No unnecessary excesses or wanton cruelties are complained of.General Krogh, the commander of the Danes, appears to be a Dane, but his forces were recruited, it is said from Norway and Sweden. The fighting has been done, therefore, not by nalives and patriot s—though they have performed the humanising work— but by hirelings ; and we may derive consolation for the down-trodden harvests and desolated homes from believing that most of those who fought were the troblesome spirits of the North whom the world can well spare.According to the last accounis, General Willisen was not so completely defeated as to make the cause he fights for immediately hopeless.Great exertions have been made io increase his army, and further fighting, it is supposed, will take place, unless the Great Powers interfere to prevent it.Neither of the objects desired by the two parties is to be obtained by violence and outrage.— Liberty cannot now be won by a hired military force, nor can the affect ions of a people and the secure possession of a courury be obtained by an army. Some other means must in the end be found of settling ihe dispute between the Schleswig Holsteiners and the Danish Government than the sword, and it would be beiter to employ them before than alter using it.—London Economist, 3rd Aug.{From the London Correspondence of the N.Y.Jour, of Com.) PIEDMONT.We have reached the culminating point of the struggle bel ween the courts of Home and Turin, —one ol the most instructive offered by history.Catholic Turin has been the scene ol a disgraceful conflict over a dying man.M.de Santa Rosa, a member of the Cabinet of Ministers, and one of ihe supporters of the law commonly called “Sic.cardi's law”, was on his death bed.The priesis sent for refused to administer the holy sacrament and absolution, unless he proiessed penitence for the sin of voting for ihat law. This attempt on his honor ai such a moment hastened the decease of the Minister. The friars, whose duty it is to perform certain ablutions on the corps, were sent for, but refused to come ; and the weeping wife and children were informed that even a burial in consecrated ground cou d not be granted to a man who had died in mortal sin.The news of these brutai acts of the priesthood flew quickly through the c ty, and created the wildest excitement. While one ol the colleagues of the deceased, the Minister of War, called on M Frangoni, the Archbishop of Turin, to demand the reason of the conduct of his subordinates, and received for answer that they had acted under his orders, the mob attacked the houses of the priests and searched for them to do them violence.A timely interposition of troops prevented the mob’s accomplishing ils designs. The Government ordered the immediate arrest of the Archbishop, and the expulsion from Turin of the friars. The Archbishop was conducted t) the fortress of Fenertrclla and the friars, under a strong escort to protect them from the mob, to Alexandria and Saluces Such of your readers as are not already familiar with the history of the controversy, between the Romish hierarchy and the government of Piedmont may refer :o the past numbers of this correspondence.I may hear repeat that the offence of the Piedmont government has been two-fold : 1. It has abolished the ancient privilege of the priests, to be tried in ecclesiastical courts alone, and to be above the jurisdiction of the courts of law.2. It has abolished the right enjoyed by the priesis, of protecting any one against the laws of the land by giving him shelter in a church. This is the sum and substance of the famous Siccardi law, which has been in force for centuries in other civilized countries. The Pope and priests deny the right of the King and Chambers of Piedmont to pass any such law. This is the issue between the parlies.I translate for you a part of the last diplomatic note of the Pope through his Minister, Cardinal Antoneili, to the Marquis d'Azeglio, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Piedmont. The doctrine of the Romish Courtis neatly and clearly stated, and the American public may judge whether such a doctrine will bear examination. The note refers to one written by the Marquis, and says his proposition ought to be “ reduced to more precise terms.Has a state, especially a Catholic state the right, when it changes its political organization, to alter the disciplinary rights of the church without the consent of the Holy See 1 If you do not wish to refuse the church the character which has been given it by Divine ordinance as a veritable and per'ect organization, independent of the civil gov-ernment, the answer of that question ought to be negative. The church has no territorial limits. It judges itself of the greater or less extension which it is proper to give to the exercise of its rights ; and if sometimes, accommodating itself to the necessities of states, it consents to modify its manner of exercising them, it does so of its own authority, its independence not permitting it to be compelled thereto by the supreme civil power.” THE CHURCH AND THE SARDINIAN GOVERNMENT.{Turin Correspondence of the Tribune.) Since my letter of the 7th the conflict between the Church and the Government, has passed through some interesting developrnen's.Ii h s been proved by wriiten documents found in the house of Archbishop Franz mi, that he is in treasonable correspondence with the absolute Courts ol Europe, and that he contemplated tri* umphing over the Government, either by means of a change of Ministry, or an intervention, either diplomatic or military. The death of Count San.ta Rosa lurmshed an occasion for setting the machinery of this plot in motion. The Ministry commenced a prosecution againsi the Archbishop for treason, and had him arrested. At the same time they called on him to resign his si e.'Phis was refused.Yesterday the Minister of the Interior received in his cabinet the j mrnanets who support the Go.vernrnent, and warned them that a storm was about to burst on Sardinia, from Rome, and that Excommunication would probably be the first in* fliction with which the Holy See would attempt t-> chastise the country into the restoration of the ex
