Sweet as the dream of former years, When sleep the eye has shrouded ; Sweet as the star that oft appears When all the rest are clouded ; Sweet as the warbler’s latest strain, When storms the year have shaded ; Or ling’ring rose, that decks the plain, When all the rest have faded 1 miscellaneous* Chas Geddes Edward Moses A Cunningham Chas Grenier Henry Vennor G E Schiller Louis Demers Thos Evans Michael Durocher Olivier Garceau Alex S Amour Andrew White James Poet Michael Moreau J H Joseph John Whitlow James Gill P Cooper Hew Ramsay George Armstrong John Thomas L Lapointe John Gilmour Laurent Dufresne Robert Hammond Paul Ligniere John Pocklington Samuel Wardiey Alderman Wardiey Antoine Lajoie Louis Beurbonniere Alex McGregor Janies Cameron Angus M’IntOoh John Sutherland H Alderdice David Brown James Cochrane James Morris C W Meakins John Dunlop Albert Lupien Wm Burnett Wm Goodier John Bridges Nicholas Poirier Alphin MHntosh J McDonald Thos Walsh Louis Brousscau Bryan Wardiey Peter Taylor John Smardin Joseph Kano Chas Rosa John Glushan John Middlemiss Daniel Rill Joseph Mearr John Cunningham James Watt Louis Lecompte J Fairbairn Geo Wright Campbell Bryson Alex Dillon Wm McCulloch Mark Graham Wm Gunn Robt Robinson, Jr James Thompson James Wilson J Pickering Simon Delorme t—22 A Fortunate Conflagration.—Our minds are like certain drugs and perfumes, which must be crushed belore they evince their vigour, and put forth their virtues.Lundy Foot, the celebrated snuff.manufacturer, originally kept a small tobac- NOTICE.rriHE undersigned hereby notifies all persons JL whom it may concern, that having, in addition to his PATENT for a HOT AIR FURNACE, dated 21st day of September, 1847, obtained ANOTHER PATENT for three descriptions ot the PROWSONJAN HOT AIR COOK-ING RANGE or FURNACE, he will prosecute the infringement of either of these Patents with the utmost rigour.G.F.PROWSE.Montreal, January 28, 1851. 1m—12 which was uninsured, was burnt to the ground. As he contemplated the smoking ruins on the following morning, in a state bordering on des», pair, some of the poor neighbours, groping among the embers for what they could find, stumbled upon several canisters of unconsumed but half-baked snuff, which they tried, and found it so grateful to their noses, that they loaded their waistcoat pockets with the spoil.Lundy Foot, roused from his stupor, at length imitated their example, and took a pinch of his own property, when ho was instantaneously struck by the superior pun« goncy and flavour it had acquired from the great heat to which it had been exposed.Treasuring up this valuable hint, he took another house in a place called Black yard, and, preparing a large oven for the purpose, set diligently about the manufacture of that high.dried commodity, which soon became widely known as Black.yard snuff; a term subsequently corrupted into the more familiar word Blackguard.Lundy Foot, making his customers pay literally through the nose, raised the price of his production, took a large house in Dublin, and ultimately made a handsome fortune by having been ruined.Paying Debts.—What pleasure it is to pay one’s debts ! I remember to hove heard Sir Thomas Lyttleton make this observation. It seems to flow from acornbination of circumstances, each of which is productive of pleasure. In the first place, it removes that uneasiness which a true spirit feels from dependence and obligation. It affords pleasure to the creditor, and therefore gratifies our social affection. It promotes that future confidence which is so very interesting to an ho*, nest mind.It opens a prospect of being readily supplied with what we want on future occasions. It leaves a consciousness of our own virtue ; and it is a measure we knew to be right, both in point ofjusticc and sound economy.—Finally, it ia the main support of simple reputation.—Shenstone.The Thumb's Expression—The thumb deserves particular notice in treating of the hand.It is the presence of a thumb that imparts to the hand of a higher animals its character of superiority. It is the development and greater mobility of the human hand over that of the ape.The thumb being, then, the characteristic element of the hu« man hand—the part developed, and most strongly typical of its superiority over that of the lower animals—the perfect formation of this part of the hand must bo regarded as a sign of the character of species being the well-marked—of a strong active individuality ; while the reverse obtains when it is small and rudimentary. The ball of the thumb is made up of strong muscles, and in it the motive function of the hand is, as it were, concentrated.Persons with a small thumb are ruled by the heart—those with a large by the head. The Home of Taste.—How easy it is to be neat —to be clean ! How easy to arrange the rooms with the most graceful propriety ! How easy it is to invest our houses with the truest elegance!_ Elegance rests not with the upholsterer or the draper ; it is not put up with the hangings or curtains; it is not put up in mosiacs ; the carpetings, tho rosewood, the mahogany, ihe oandalabra or marble ornaments; it exists in the spirit presiding over the chambers of the dwelling.Contentment must always be most graceful ; it sheds serenity over the scene of its abode ; it transforms waste into a garden. The home lightened by these imitations of a nobler and brighter life may be wanting in much which the discontented desire ; but to the inhabitants it will be a palace, far outvyin^ the oriental in brilliancy and glory.Marvels of the Cornish Mines.—Some of the mines are truly grand undertakings. The consoli-dated mines, ihe largest of the Cornish group, employ upward of3,ÜÜÜ persons. One of iis engines pumps water from, a direct depth of 1,600 feet, tfle weight of the pumping apparatus alone being upward of 500 tons ; the pumping rod is 1,741) feet long, and raises about 2,000,000 gallons of water in a week, from a depth equal to five times tho height of St.Paul’s.These arc indeed, wonders to marvel at ! Tho consolidated and united mines, both belonging to one company, are staled to have used the following vast quantities of materials in a year : Coals, 15,270 tons ; candles,_ 132,145 lb ; gunpowder, 82,000 lb ; leather, straps
